Newsletter of the Middle Tennessee Science Fiction Society

Our next gathering is the chili bash
e mail bemscribe_too@hotmail.com

Or next club meeting will be March 10th

But I am on the computer now..
yes Pookhastein is finally here.
Thanks a lot to my friend Tom Norris
who found time to create Pookhastein
in between running about and helping to save the state from nasty weather formations
( Tom works for TEMA and is sort of also on loan to FEMA)

Check out my web page at
http://www.oocities.org/area51/dimension/4242/

For back issues of the newsletter go to
http://www.oocities.org/area51/dimension/4242/clubs.html

(Ps by the way.. a Bem is a bug-eyed monster and a name of one of the former SF clubs here..

I used to be one the newsletter editors.. thus bemscribe)

Hmm and yes Bill Bridget pointed out he knows what a BEM
is but this goes out to a lot of new people..
so bear with us.
All of the Clarksville fen and Greg and Dana Bridges
down in Jackson Tennessee came out of the recent
weather nastiness just fine.
On just this lovely note the Climate Prediction Center
is forecasting a greater chance of tornadoes for the Tennessee
and Ohio Valley until this summer..
We are just so thrilled;..

News about upcoming cons

The Concave hotel is of course sold out.
The room lottery has been held.
There are some nearby overflow hotels
but they tend to fill up rather quickly.

The huxter room is sold out and so is the art show.

The art show selling out more than a month in advance before the con is kinda special.
But then again the sales at the show were better than at larger conventions.
It really proves the wisdom of just having one bid for an art show at a small con.
Plus for a relaxacon the art auction itself is a fun piece of programming..

The Middle Tennessee SF Society will be throwing a party ConCave on Saturday afternoon
and we also will throw a party Friday night at Parthecon

Speaking of Parthecon..
Yes there will be a Parthecon.. April 23 - 25.
Same place as last year The Days Inn Airport
on Briley Parkway next to the Black golden shiny building.
(the address is actually 1 International Plaza)

$30 for adults till March 20th and $ 35 thereafter and at the door.
Pre reg for children is $12 and $15 at the door.

Send registrations to
Parthecon
710 Emily Dr
Goodelettsville, Tn. 37072

Write the above address for more info or e-mail patsijean@msn.com

If you are going to throw a party
you need to call the hotel and ask for Bob Bishoff at 615 - 361- 7666.
You can also call 615 - 361- 7666 to make a hotel reservation
(I guess don't ask for Bob)
The rate is $58 a room and I don't have any info
on the reservation cut off date.

Past con news

Everyone who went to Chattacon had a good time..

The only problem reported was that a lot of the parties
especially the B5 party was very crowded.
The atmosphere was very friendly to those with allergies and lung ailments.

A lot of the wild, trouble-causing element was gone.
All in all several people talked of how much more they enjoyed this Chattacon then ones in the recent past and would recommend it to their friends.

Heard form Sherman Dorn
I had reported in the last newsletter

>Dan went to GaFilk..
>He ran into Lee who was toast being for the con.
>Dan talked a long time with Irv and Bill Sutton.

Sherman replied..
And he saw us!!! (We also saw him.)
Thanks again for the newsletter.

Recent kids' photos at

( and my hasn't Katheryn grown was what I thought when I saw the photo and still a cutie)

Heard from Julee Johnson Tate about plans for next years Contact..

"Julia Alldredge's idea for a theme is:
[unpronounceable symbol, probably involving bheer
and a space ship or bem]
The Convention Formerly Known as Contact:
We're Gonna Party Like It's 1999!"
Julee went on to say..
"There will be a Contact 17."
Chris and I will be running it.
It will be our last (running it--not necessarily the last Contact!).
It will be September 24th, 25th and 26th.
It will be a "modified relaxacon," with maybe one or two programming
items, but no full slate of guests.
There will be a dealers room.
There will be an art show.
There will be gaming.
We will be contacting folks over the next few weeks
to confirm more details. They will be forthcoming as available.
Having said that, Chris and I would like to thank everyone for their patience.
It was a tough decision,
but we really can't pass up Julia's idea for a theme and giving all our buds an excuse to come to E'ville.
We're going to need lots of help on this one, too, guys.

Just because we're not having a traditional convention, doesn't make it any easier.

Also, Scott and Jane Dennis will have the Contact 16 t-shirts
to us within the next two weeks, barring any further technical breakdown.
We'll get those out as soon as possible. >>
T-shirts are here, except for the long-sleeved ones. No word on those. *sigh*"

A little space news..
The little planet that could is going to stay a planet..
of course Pluto is probably the construction shack after all..

Depending on the phase of the moon the Russians will either
or not launch the living quarters of the International Space Station this July.

They are planning to keep Mir up longer if they can find any one with deep enough pockets to do so.

The Russian space mirror Znamya isn't providing illumination on the subject.

Taiwan enters the space age with the launch of their first satellite.

A littlle last piece of news you may have already heard if you are a Babylon 5 fan..
Since last week when a rumor started floating that
TnT had decided not to carry the B5 spinoff Crusade things have been interesting to say the least.

B5 creator J. Michael Straczynski replied by saying that only Warner Brothers could halt production on the series.

The rest of the message implied that WB is looking for a new home for Crusade.
It ended with JMS encouraging fans to contact the Sci Fi Channel about picking up Crusade.

So far there has been no official word from either TnT or WB.
If you are interested in hearing more about this drop me a line and I will pass along whatever info I find out.

All for now
