The next big local event will be Outside Con in September.
Ther club picnic will be sometime in August.
--------------------------------------------------------
From some meetings past..
One of the more interesting tid bits came from Rj. His attorney Tod is a big Beatles collector. So when Ringo came to town Tod was contacted to loan out some of his collection for a pre concert party for Ringo.
A little bit of talk about nashcon. It is a historical gaming con.
No one seemed to be real enthused about going to see Battle field Earth. ( some of us did go. In my opinion BE will go down as this generations Plan 9. Some of the others called it space opera.. though they finally admitted it was pretty bad space opera)
Threre was some discussion about the movie "Gladiator" which wandered off into the tangent just how much was history (very little) . Whether there had been a Roman legionairre who had been thrown into slavery and later gained his freedom by fighting as a gladiator any time during the Roman empire.
This sorta wandered down the trail to siege tatcics in Englanbd during the summer (talking about "Braveheart and how it well … really compressed time) to did Mozart and Saliera ever meet.
Then the was the firewood party talk. We need to setr some type of schedule and just let people know that it is depending on the weather. Some how beer butt chicken entered into the conversation (through the chicken coup door I guess)( which reminds me.. hmmm.. if only I had a digitial camera I would have some really good black mail photos.))
The love bug virus came up and how it affected different people at work ( it got into the mail networks of some companies and others cut off their email access tio the outside.
Parthecon came up. Ken Moore. and Bill Payne will be reviving Kubla next year.
So far the plan is for it to be a relaxicon but some people would like to see some type of guest.
They are now recruting people so contact Ken at 615- 832-8402
or write to him at 647 Devon Dr. Nashville, Tn. 37220 if you would like to know more about the convention or to help.
Everyone seemed to agree that the programming went well ( I have about ten pages of notes I need to type on a panel that had Cliff Amos and Irv Koch talking about southern fandom). Bob Emblers panel on arceology went well. It was generally believed that more people would probably gone to the programming if it hadnt been so far out of the way from the rest of the con. And in the last programming room in a corner.
Embler was going to play host to Adventure con with camping near Crystal Onyx cave in Kentucky and a possible side trip to Indian Trade Cave.
Some odd news..
Book news
The day of the meeting was Olaf Stapledons 140th birthday. (doesn't look a day older than Ken)
Dan was impressed both by Vinge's Deepness of the Sky and the nominated Bujold book.
Anita read "Mission Child" and a John Grisham book.
Reece ( I believe) is listening to a tape of John Cleese reading the scretape letters.
Upcoming things I need more info on..
That Black Rose will be at the Bell Witch campground (first weekend in Sept??)

Worldcon news
=========================================
Cons of the recent past:
Went down to Jeckyll Island for Son of Beach Con otherwise known as DSC 38.
This was a very small island just north of Jacksonville in Georgia and within site of St Simon Island.
A lot more people may have gone to the con but the cost of flying down to Jacksonville plus renting a car sorta put some people off. Now some people like Jenny from Louisville drove down all the way and others didn't have that far to travel. What was suprising was the number of fans from Cincinati. Some of them used the con as a layover on their way to Magicon in Orlando. Mike Resnick and Carol were going to the con in the midst of multiple trips to France (more on this later). Some of them just came down for the convention.
Sadly Joel Zakem didn't make it down due to the unexpected death of his father just before the convention.
What was suprising was how few of the Charlotte worldcon committee made it. Irv was there and his wife Kate (who I really enjoy talking too) Dan Caldwell and Tom Feller helped some with the party but that was about it.
It would have been nice to have met some of the Carolina fans.
Some of the of the committee probably couldn't help it due to prior comitments to Libnertycon which was the next weekend. ( and I sorta wonder if both cons being so close together didn't hurt them both.. with Timmy and a lot of the Liberty people not making it to DSC and some of the people who went to DSC not making it to Liberty.)
I enjoyed being on the island even though it isnt may favorite one ( Dauphin still is ) and it was the first time I had ever seen the Atlantic Ocean. It was very big, very wet and not real pretty.
The tides were fascinating. Dauphin in the Gulf has tides but they didn't seem so dramatic.
In the afternoon you could walk along the lower beach which was scattered with still occupied shells.
Lynn Harris and Toni Weiskopf won the Rebel
Huntsville will host the 2002 DSC

Fan news
From the LA Times by the way of Locus Online
"Forrest J Ackerman won rights to the name ''Dr. Acula'', while his former business associate, Ray Ferry, was found liable for breach of contract, libel and misrepresentation. Ackerman was awarded $382,500 in compensatory and $342,000 in punitive damages. Ray Bradbury and film director John Landis were among those who testified on Ackerman's behalf. "

Joe Mayhew winner of Best Fan Artist Hugo and well known Washington Science Fiction Association member passed away on June 10th.
Joe had been striken suddenly by a delibating illnes . He went to Balticon using a wheelchair the last time a lot of fans saw him. Despite his declining health Joe was still planning on contributing drawings for various fanzines.
Recently he took a turn for the worse and was hospitalized . While the cause of his death is uncertain the hospitals buest guest at this time is Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease , a relative of Mad Cow Disease .
One of the interesting things I have come across in the numerous tributes that have been floating out of the ether is that Joe was the Library of Congress ' Recommending Officer for Science Fiction . And in that position he developed the official government definaition of science fiction.
He is going to missed .
http://www.wsfa.
Hello Again EvaI forgot to ask:1) Do you remember Joe's friend Avery Davis?
2) Through your fannish channels, do you know how to track him down?
I saw him and his bride to be at the Baltimore Worldcon. They were
about to move from Georgia to the West (Colorado maybe???). Avery
really ought to hear about Joe.
There are other people [from the late 70s, early 80s]... Ted White says
he'll try to let Dan Joy know. I really don't know how to get in touch with
Wayne Gray (old Art Show buddy), who is probably an economics
professor somewhere.
If you think of someone who has been close to Joe in the past please
let me (and them) know. Thanks very much,
It hit the Health Care Financing Administration (part of Social
Security) today, and they don't even use Outlook--they use NovellGroupware.
I'm on a temp assignment for Computer Science Corporation and they
have a contract with HCFA. I hope they hire me--I hate temping.Eva Whitley

Bradbury (The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man) was the first SF author to speak at Caltech graduate ceremonies since 1928.

From Locus news online:

Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts: The Subversive Folklore of Childhood by Josepha Sherman and T.K.Weisskopf. is being called racist on other things by some parents in Ontario, Canada.
In an article by BOB STEELE - for the The Arts Report - CBC Radio about how some parents are trying to get the book pulled from the children's section of the library.
According to the article
"Deborah Defoe is the chief librarian for the Kingston Frontenac Public Library. She says the library has reviewed the parents complaints and sees no reason to remove the book:"
"We have investigated both the value of the book itself and we've checked with a number of other libraries as to where they've put it in their collections. The libraries that we spoke to all had in their children's section, so at this point I see no reason to make a change in our policy."
Also according to the article:
Defoe says parents must be the ones to monitor what their children are reading.
She says even though a book like Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts may be offensive it does provide an opportunity to talk with children about issues of racism, homophobia and sexuality.
