Last meeting of minds

Anita sez she is finding retirement tiring..
making coffee, sipping it while listening to music.
Play with the cat.. catch up on her reading.
She has been on a Grisham kick and also reading some
Michael Crichton.

Pat has been reading a historical romance that used
time travel as a plot device.

Sometime in the future we will have a special meeting
at outer limits store.

Elections..
Anita is once again the president and will help with
some of the social aspects such as keeping track of
birthday’s etc. Dan is in charge of programming and
is looking for people to help.
I have some info on programming but need some one
to write letters etc.

RJ is still the treasurer and I am still the
Kronos slave.
So yes the semi witted dyslexic pookha will still
be slinging news your way.
( hmm sometimes semi witted inst. to bad …
rememberClaudius 's speech about this after the
death of Caligua.)

On other things…
Robert exclaimed that Cleopatra 2525 was so bad
along with Jack of trades you need to watch it.
Personally I miss Briscoe County Jr.

(ghost of convention past ...)
There were some reports on Chattacon.
The more I hear about this years Chattacon the
more it sounds like the Blind men describing
 the elephant.

Some fans have said it was one of the best they
had ever been to; that the fans were not as
rowdy as they had been in the past.

They really appreciated that it was a lot more
smoke free than it had been in the past.
They had a great time going to programming
and the parties at night.
But then:
Some others said parts of it were out of control
with one friend who had a drunken con goer
sprawl all over them.
And when the unruly person was pried off of them
the drunken fool proceed to fall across
another person until they were hurried away
by their friends.

It would be interesting to have a couple (hint )
written reports from both points of view.
-----

The monthly club get together:
The chili bash went really well though a little small.
We had Anita's white chili, RJ 's chili for normal
people and Charlie's Chernobyl chili that I can remember.
At least this year the Chernobyl chili didn't try
to eat it's way down to the lower floor
of Tom and Anita's apartment complex.

Convention News
--------------------------------------------
More Ghosts of Conventions Past….

I actually made it to Concave for the whole weekend
 this year (yipee)
It was
down about 50 people this years to Gary's relief.
( I think last years went well over 400 people).

It is still one of the best cons for just going to
hang out with your friends.
As usual it was also the "party convention".
There were five or more parties Friday night alone
 (including two
WorldCon bid parties) a couple Saturday afternoon
and more on Saturday night.

The fan GoH this year was some shadowy figure by
the name of Stephen Boucher.
 (this is a joke son)
(actually he was very nice and
intersting to listen to...)
I said this because, if you were unfannish
 (like me) and read the
program book during the con you would have
 discovered a game inside.
You had to find 3 true things Stephen's
bio full of lies, distortions and fantasy.
(really funny)

One person one of the truths would be that Stephen
had been born while I argued that he could have
been hatched (well a SF fan.. one maybe born
in Australia.. I could see the hatched theory.
.((this is another joke son..)(you just had to be there))
But I still do not know what the 3 true things were.
--
The Parties..
Pat Molloy and Naomi Fisher hosted a party
for the Boston 2004 WorldCon bid.
Pat said they sold more presupports for the bid
then they did at Chattacon.
Naomi, of course put out an impressive spread of food
 (except for the Boston Cream Pie : {
but it was good : }but still not Naomi food .

The highlight of the party for me was hanging
out with Betsy Hirst and daughter Jackie.
Jackie turning out to be pretty good
digital photographer.
She even had me and Betsy doing poses
( yes I who believes
that a camera will still your soul)
And if you see a photo on the web of Betsy
and I looking adoringly at that Galatic Patrol figure..

well that isn’t an endorsement but rather
playing along with Jackie.

Tom and Anita Feller were the primary hosts
for the Charlotte 2004 party .
It was real laid back and included a lot of food
like meatballs, chili ect.
Both of the parties took place Friday night just
a couple of doors apart from each other so for
awhile I just sorta floated back and forth
between the two depending who was in the
 room at the time.

As I noted earlier there were several other parties
 that night.
There was one party I went to that was decorated in
sliver and sorta became an unofficial dance.
Which didn't have a name but t there was a note
on the party flyer that it was thrown by Floor Four.

There was a jedi bathrobe party and one party I
missed totally that I wish I had gone to.
 Chris and Julee Johnson’s Tate's,
" We are throwing this party because we don't
 have to party"
I don't have a complete list of the parties
this year since I was being really bad and
 not taking notes.

Spent part of Friday night in the con suite or
outside on a porch or balcony just hanging out
  with people.
Spent some time talking with Bill Payne who
his spending more time at his mothers
(who is doing a bit better and still gets out some)
Steve Francis who showed off both
great grandbaby photo and his new (well to him..)
 mustang convertible.

Saw Annette Carrico who reported that Western was
about the same. This was the first time that
she was having to run the con suite by proxy since
it was decided that her motorized wheel chair
was too heavy for the elevator committee to
 carry up the stairs.

Pat Sims, Cockie Cavin , Sue Francis and a host
of other people did a great job with the con suite
as usual though.

Several of the Cincy gang where there including Roger
who looked really well.
Of course a lot of the Cincinnati fen spent their time
(along with Sue Francis and some others)
either being possessed by that card game Wizzard
or well playing the usual.( not Hearts..)

Rocky told me a little more about his new career
and I found out he is in a computer class with Andy Bateman.
Sue, Rocky's better half : } had some beautiful bead work
pouches in the art show.

All of them sold except for one
(pooh on silly property taxes)

Jeff Lockridge talked about the decision to
discontinue Contact since the fans did not turn out
to support it as a relaxacon.

saturday
During the banquet I was helping out in the con suite
with a Bowling Green fan who had temporarily migrated to
Baltimore and back to Bowling Green and who
was eventually hoping to eventually settle
in Nashville (speaking of Baltimore ..
missed Lee Hagee since she didn't make it down.
Another person that was missed was Susan Stockell.)

Finished my tour of duty in the con suite and
gathered up a supply of papers to peruse.
The Ttitans news for this newsletter is
that Neil O Donnell turned down more money and a
chance at a starting quarterback position in
Tampa Bay because his family likes it in Nashville
 and wanted to stay.

Sometime Ricky Sheppard showed up with more of the
mysterious ways of the Masons.

Some of the things about the Temple in Louisville
sound interesting and there may be a little side trip
 during Rivercon.

Something else…
even though Ricky is a night auditor
he now must answer the phone with this long message
that includes something goofy.name of place.
. wonderful or fine day..

Shared a room with Tom and Sherry Norris who are
still enjoying their house on the outskirts of Manchester.
Hopefully sometimes soon weather permitting
there will be a star party
( more and more telescopes are migrating their
way down there.)

There was a cook out (sorta of a private party)
that I missed while I took a nap but I made
it to the joint Parthecon / MidSouthCon party
(featuring the chocolate pyramid of power).

That night there where even more parties including
The SFC room party hosted by
 Julie Wall and Toni Weiskopf.

Frank and Millie were hosting a Xerpes for
Worldcon in 2010 complete with gigantic black light
 and skiffy punch.

Before I forget it I have to mention that this year
Gary out did himself in the hideous shirt department.
For those not in the know sometime in the early history
of Concave Gary took to wearing really loud shirts
so the con chair could be easily spotted.
Some were off the rack and some were made by
Corlis and I believe Liz Williams.

Some were even cute (the animaniacs one)
but all of them were bright and loud.
But one Friday night he had the most frightful one of all...
even more horrific was that it came off the
rack of what Gary termed a good clothing store.

It was this metallic fabric that shimmered that at first
just appeared to be rose colored until it was up close
in good light and then as gazing at the flukeman
in the x files you realized that this thing had
 a floral pattern.
(shiver…)
Well during Frank and Millie's party he carried the
"thing" into the party to see if it glowed which
thankfully it didn't.

The most well "interesting " party was the
crack and cheese party and had pizza to eat and well..
Hmm moon rising???

Stayed up late Saturday night in the con suite
gabbing with friends.
From time to time someone would say they needed
to turn in but the conversation and munching of
bugles continued on.
The other popular saying was something along
the lines of that is more information that I needed to know.

Finally the group split up and I wandered back to the room.

Sunday was just packing and heading out…
Now for a little news.
The convention had a little problem with the hotel
 manager this year.
There had been things in the past such as the time
she was in a snit and had the bedspreads removed.
But things would work out and the fans really love
 this place and the location.
But a couple of things went a little over the top.
There were problems with the maid service.
Then a Sunday morning things got real cute when
the manager started charging some people a little
higher rate depending on the number of people
and blaming it on Gary
( the con had an agreed upon flat rate)

This leads up to the possibility that Concave may be moving.
The big differnce from the past is that there are
two other hotels in the area which would make nice
homes for the convention.

They have a few more rooms and they have things like elevators.

Will pass along new info as it comes out.

Another piece of traumatic news was that Bob Tucker
has been sending messages to various con chairs that
he will no longer be attending conventions due to
his age and concerns about his health.

It was not a total surprise but still.
I feel real sorry for all the fans that never had
 chance to meet him.

One note on Libertycon…
Uncle Timmy has gotten Tim Zahn to replace
 Tucker as toastmaster.

Parthecon news…
If you have any questions about the guests or
 pgrogrammig contact
Tom Feller at: TomFeller@aol.com

Stephani Lewis (615-826-6183) is in charge of the Larp.

( and I heard something about some wedding??)

And the paperback of James Hogan's Outward Bound
should be out.
-------------------------------------

News about Son of Beach Con from Steve Francis:

They have already reached 120 pre registration for the con,
which is more than half of the total registration for
Beach Con in 1996.

Steve went on to declare….

"Naomi Fisher says that she will be at Son of BeachCon
to defend her title of "Miss Rubble of 1996"."

" I assume that means she is running again for the"honor"."
Note Naomi got it for all the damage she has done to the waislines in fandom.

Steve also mentioned something about some con in Kentucky
somewhere, someplace near the Ohio River sometime late
summer and something about this would be the last one.

Hmmmm

-----------------------------------

More Libertycon news…
As I mentioned above Tim Zahn will be replacing Tucker
as the MC.
: Sandy McDade is wanted to hear
from all the people who offered to help out in the
hospitality suite this year.
There was a little accident with the cards and notes in
her jeans pockets and the jean encounter
 with a washing machine.
Libertycon uses the same hotel as Galaticon the
Ramada Inn South except the address is a little different.
I75 at East Ridge exit
East Ridge, Tn 37412
The phone number is 423-894-6110
And guess what … after saying last year that you had
to make a reservation by paying for the first night
in advance with check or money order and not a credit card.. then they changed their minds and accepted credit cards
 for the deposit..
Well this year once again it is pay for first night s room
in advance with check or money order.
I don't see a cut off date for the room block on
the reservation form (but I may be overlooking it)
The rooms are $ 56 per night.

--------------------------------------------
Steve and Sue Francis are the fan guests of honor at Inconjunction.
------------------------------------------------------
Midwest Con has a new hotel the Hampshire which was
the home for a previous MidWest con.

Some slightly disappointing news from
Mary & Conrad Stolzenbach about the planned Mythcon.
It has now been pushed back to 2003 instead of 2001
 here in Nashville.

Author news..
there was a note on the Mike Resnick mail list that
Mike had finally seen a 32 minute version of the
Branch now called Never Take the Name of God in Vein.
Mike goes on to report:
" The guy didn't have much money, but he made a very
professional-looking film. A bit talky --
 he couldn't afford any effects,
he was making it while hiding from the church
and the cops,
and he was trying to condense a very complicated story
into a half-hour movie, Decently acted.
Interesting camera angles and movement.
As dark and grim as the book was, it looks like a
carefree picnic next to the mood and tone of the film. "

"I hope to hell this condensation works, and he can
raise the money to do a full-length version."

Fan news:

Uncle Timmy () tbolgeo@cdc.net) reports in one of his
ether delivered newsletters that his daughter
Brandy Spraker is due on March 17th and the baby
us supposed to be a boy.
Congratulations are on the way.

Also heard from Samada Juede about the weather
down her way… acontinuation of the weather thread from
 last months newsletter:
Samanda reported they had "ice something fierce"
but the roads near their house were fine.
She went on to say:
" Donald & Robert Sneddon [who came here to get
away from the Scots winter ... as he put it,
"It may be an ice storm, but it's also *sunny* outside!]
went out for milk & such & had no trouble."
"So *we* were fine...."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh no not something else from Steve Francis..
(well actually several of the items came in one email
but they just fit different Kronos categories)
"David and Holly Francis have told Sue and I that
we are expecting our 15th grandchild in mid September. "

$65.00 per night 1-4 people room rate

the on line flyer says..” While plenty of rooms
are still available, we expect the hotel to sell out,
so please get your reservations in early.
“

Ps there is a false rumor that the hotel is already
sold out going around.
As you can see above this is untrue.
But I would make the reservations soon since the hotel
has a tendency to sell out before the con.
