September Kronos This is the last meeting at the current location. Next month we will have a Halloween party instead of a meeting. November 8th will be the first meeting in the new Green Hills Library. The meeting gathers at 6pm with the business meeting at 6:30 The new library is adjacent to the Green Hill Post Office on Benham Avenue, between Graybar and Glen Echo. The new branch will be approximately 4 times larger -- 25,000 square feet -- and will house approximately 110,000 volumes, more computers, lots more parking and no competing with the movie theatre. This coming weekend we will be having a firewood party at Dan Caldwell’s house starting at 4pm on Saturday .Call Dan at 876-4146 for directions. ------------------------------------- The following quote is from Ansible (which lost best fanzine to File 770 though Langford continued his lockjaw grip on best fan writer) the quote: Bob Devney_ found a Quote of the Month from William Gibson, now doing ads for Anderson consulting: `The future is here already. It's just unevenly distributed.' Ahhh: this explains many things about Anderson. Club News August club minutes Passed out the books for review. Which lead into what have we been reading. Mark is reading Neal Stephenson’s "Cryptonomicon" which was nominated for a Hugo and also was on the NY Times list of notable books. Mark said the book has changed his normal pace of reading. With this one he reads about five pages and then pauses to sit and think. Mark did finish "Katastrophe" by Randall Boyll, which is set in Indiana. The book featured two main characters that are friends and chess players. Well along the way one of them hypothesis the other several times with one of the being a supposed past life regression with an unexpected result. The one that is hypnotized possibly is a reincarnation of well some one you wouldn't invite to your party as a diner guest. Well, some of you might ( Steve Allen probably would have to complete conversation group). Mark described it as a real good "page turner". George read Obsidian, which is an Anton Blake Vampire hunter book. Soon we will be moving to our new home a couple of blocks away. Since there is (or was at the time) that the room may be full of boxed books in September we don't know yet where we will be in September. (of course everything worked out and we met at the library.)The books in boxes are the hypothetical books in storage that they will have room for in the new library. Reece who is one of the librarians at the SE branch (and you wondered why so much of the really good SF is at home there. Of course, with the lovely computer reservation system you can go on line and they will be bought to your preferred branch) Reece talked about the books that were in storage. This got off onto tales of how some books that are in transit after being request sometimes slip through twilight zones of time. The book in transit purgatory sometimes show up late and others in some unexpected place. Dan borrowed my copies of Mimosa and File 770. Somewhere the discussion veered in transit and dwelled in the land of old TV series. Richard Carlson's "Our Friend the Sun" was warmly remembered. George remembered a show called either Crash Cargo or Cult Cargo. This was a cartoon show with the exception that the characters had real moving lips superimposed. (shades of Conan O Brien) . This led into Fireball XL5 (one of my childhood favorites). Then it was off into our movie reviews. Mark and Charlie saw the Hollow Man. Mark said it was intense. The effects were good but the movie was "creepy". According to Mark the scientist guinea pig was a megalomaniac to start with and just got worse. He especially gets mad because his eyelids are invisible and he can’t sleep. Of course I am thinking: why doesn't he use a black out eyeshade thing. Ahh he must be a not to bright mad (mad as mean and not just mad crazy) scientist. Charlie and Mark both saw "Space Cowboys" and recommended it. Later I saw it and yep it is really great. It starts out in the past with these maverick test pilots and crew and later leaps into the near future when a very mysterious Russian satellite develops trouble. It starts out as a lark when the now seemingly old men are called back to help. (with the help of a little persuasive black mail.) But all long the movie doesn’t let you forget that something is not right out in space and something even sinister is afloat. The movie was actually was written several years ago and Clint Eastwood was approached about directing it. But at the time he supposedly didn't buy the concept of the old geezers in space. And then Glen went into orbit. A lot of people are pointing out that the date for Kubla on one flyer is not a weekend in 2001 but was in 2000. Also, the number of cons is in dispute. Reece said that American History magazine had several color stereographs from the Civil War published in a recent edition. Anita bought along her Rivercon photos. In a discussion about the rummage sale to be held at Outside Con as a fund raiser for the club, Anita sorta let slip that at one of the former rummage sales we (as in other club officers) went ahead and slipped some late arriving money directly into the clubs Winter Holiday party fund without sending it into the treasury first. Of course this was said right in front of RJ our treasurer who took this news calmly. Which either possibly means that we will hear about it in the future or he knew about it and let the party fools have their extra planning fun. Mark's on Tod is in premed at Middle Tennessee. Mark also commented on about how in the past Tod was involved in the fantasy/middle ages group Dagohir. That often the living room floor was covered with duct tape other things to make the swords. Somehow the conversation slipped downhill back to the "Hollow Man" with Reece making comparisons to Ray Milland's "The Man with X Ray Eyes" and how the Hollow man having invisible eyelids reminded him of it because Millands character couldn't sleep either. Then the man with the X-Ray eyes saw further and further till the Earth itself was invisible and he could see all the way through to the sun. Last month we talked about Rocky and Bullwinkle and Reece bought along a new library book. "The Moose that Roared". About then we decided we want a silly movie party. But we need a host. Any volunteers out there. The founding of the lost civil war submarine the Henley was (not to make a pun) bought up. About how Clive Cussler and his foundation found it after many others have failed. Lairs of silt covered it, which is why is so hard to find but at the same time seemingly so well preserved. It is going to be both fascinating and horrifying . The conversation went down the path of ancient Nashville club history and tells of Richard Cornwall who was an early member and a reenacter. Once he even took Ken to take place in a re enactment. Followed by a description of Ken running full tilt down a hill carrying a musket (not a Civil War re enactment) screaming at the top of his lungs, "kill", "kill" "kill". With this image we decided it was time for RJ's slides of Rivercon. A lot of us where surprised that Meade and Penny made it up while looking at a slide of Meade and Cliff. One of the masquerade photos was of a Klingon in tartans holding a sheep. One of the most moving things at the masquerade was a board with names of various Rivercon functions with a lit bulb next to it. The bulbs went one by one to dark symbolizing the end of Rivercon. BJ Willinger as the black and white (actually grey) Ming host of the ceremony. Charlie Williams commented that when he first met BJ he was still Father (as in priest)Willinger. And BJ turned Bob Asprin into Ming, As change of pace Mark was trying to behave (we didn't want him to) but George was over on the other side next to Mark making (according to Mark) funny, wicked comments under his breath which was making it difficult for Mark to behave. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The Hugo Awards Best Novel: Deepness in the Sky by Vernor Vinge Best Novella: "The Winds of Marble Arch" by Connie Willis (Asimov’s) Best Novelette: "1016 to 1" by James Patrick Kelly (Asimov’s) Best Short Story: "Scherzo with Tyrannosaur" by Michael Swanwick (Asimov’s) Best Related Book: Science Fiction of the 20th Century by Frank M. Mike Resnick was the master of ceremonies or ringmaster for opening ceremonies. The crowd was amazing but maybe not since this was the very last opening ceremonies of Rivercon. Sue Francis in introducing Mike mentioned that Mike had traveled to France to receive a very prestigious award. Sue told how the Mayor of Paris even presented him with the award and then Resnick finished the tale by explaining the award included a check. Less than an hour after presenting Mike with the award and check they mayor was indicted. For as Mike put for registering people to vote whom residence was the cemetery (I never knew Chicago was French) The fans who traveled the farthest was Robin Johnson and Stephen Boucher who came from Australia. (well I don't think Stephen counts since he is around in the states all the time . For all we know he could have came from across the River.) (grin) More from Mike Resnick: Something true then and now: SF books with no sequels are a rare species. Bruce Pelz should have been awarded a Hugo for best fiction (the LA Worldcon financial report) Mike introduced all the former guests who were present and asked them to take a bow. (most of the people on the flyer were present except for Forry Ackerman who was in transit and suffering through airplane hell. One of the most popular topics of conversation during the con was to swap airline travel nightmare stories. Travel through air was real bad just before and after Rivercon with a major storm system rampaging through the Midwest.) Not yet time for," to your scattered parties go". A play on words by Resnick of one of the best known books by the first guest Phil Jose Farmer who couldn't make it but did send his regards. Sue Francis took the stage again to ask the audience to participate in an idea she got from Inconjunction. She had everyone get up. Then those who hadn’t attended five sit down, then ten, 20, 21 on to only those left standing were those who had attended all twenty five. They were later presented with a special memorial Rivercon mug. John Hollis was the only one from Nashville to have attended all 25. Mike and Christa Sinclair presented more Kentucky Colonels to the staff. And Mike read a proclamation from the Mayor stating that this was Rivercon day. Steve Francis made a presentation to the ringmaster Resnick and announced Resnick was Rivercon Triple Crown winner. Author GoH, Fan GoH and Toastmaster. Resnick then commented that the last Triple Crown winner Affirmed gets a $250,000 stud fee. After opening ceremonies was the ice cream social and then to the parties. Lots of parties both nights. Both of the bids for 2004 Worldcon were there. Rivercon was the debut contention for the Kittyhawks. Naomi had a tasty spread up in the Boston party but no mushrooms. Lots of people in both parties. The Xerpes party was the rocking party of Friday night. More aliens. More Skippy. The big black light that Frank built which in reality is the guiding light for the transport spacecraft. There was the really final (they promise) Contact party, another con that has sailed into the west. Mike and Christa Sinclair hosted retrospective New Orleans party one night and a Moscow party the other. ConGlomeration party hosted by the new SF con which will be taking place over across the River in Indiana next year. Uncle Timmy and Liberty crew were present with the news that they were bidding for a DSC . (oh yes, now we know at least on of the shows Esther Frierson watches. After adopting a kitty hawk at the Charlotte party she went to the Liberty party and on seeing the cheese puffs exclaimed "cheesy poofs". To which I say ,"Timmy". Uhmm to continue this riff the Toronto people better watch out in 2003 when they play host to the Worldcon or we may just "Blame Canada". ( of course all of this are allusions to South Park) One of the most unusual sites Friday night was a smiling Irv Koch with a kitty hawk perched on his head. There was a MidSouth Con party complete with the traditional Oreo pyramid. On Saturday night among a lot of other parties there was the Kubla party. I had lots of stuff circled on the pocket program that I was planning on attending but throughout the weekend I kept on remeeting old friends and chatting the time away. One of the panels I did make it to was "SF Fandom:The Early Days". The room was overflowing with people. Stories about the early times of fandom and how t has changed. And for those who are concerned that the younger fans are not interested in fan history should be reassured that there were a lot of young faces in the crowd. Pieces and bits from the panel ( I really need to get a tape recorder when I go to these things. Does the Oral History project still exist?? need some one with a little better vision to let me know whom are the people speaking when I am in the very back. Some of them could recognize but a couple I wasn’t sure of) The original WorldCon was inspired by the World's fair and in the beginning everyone knew everyone else since the fans had been corresponding with each other a long time even if they had never met in person. It was noted that the first Worldcon to go over a 1,ooo fans was in 1956. One difference in the early days of fandom most of the fans were poor since fandom started in the depression. But there also was a huge difference in the price of the cons. Rusty told about the time he hitchhiked to Denver for the Worldcon with 17cents in his pocket. He knew he didn't have enough the pay the whopping membership of one dollar but he just wanted to say high to some people and meet the chairman. When the chairman heard of Rusty's exploits to attend the con he invited him in as his guest. (As I am writing and reading this it reminds me of how it would be nice if there was a special World con supporting membership sans the publications. But where you could vote for the Hugos in about the twenty dollar range. Forty dollars isn’t a lot to some but for those on limited or fixed incomes it is a lot...oh well) One of the panelists (help someone who remembers who said this ?? maybe Joe Hensley) that when he attended Michicon (spelling) in 1944 Tucker had advised him to tell the people at the con that Claude Degler had sent him. ( who was Degler you may be asking... that little piece of fannish history in the next newsletter) a pocker game played a part in here some where. There was a wastefulness about when fans all read, discussed and argued over SF. And now all the media and games came in now a lot of people don't know SF. (Something I don't totally agree with) At one point the discussion went into which inventions caught SF by surprise. Even though there were flying cars Rusty Hevelin said the jet airplane caught the writers by surprise. The transistor was suggested but not really predicted. The story of John Campbell, Astounding and the bomb was told. About how the FBI showed up and wanted to know what Campbell knew and how after it was mentioned in Astounding. (At lot of info had been unclassified before the war) Campbell also showed them something else. He had a large map of the US with push pins indicating locations of Astounding subscribers. He showed them how for sometime pins had been relocating and now there was an intense concentration around Oak Ridge, Tn. I missed the actual masquerade but did see the awards ceremony. Even though I missed one presentation I later learned with a woman who was dressed in a kimonos but had the appearance of a moth. She started explaining how she liked to make nice things for the house with found objects such a cables and rails and other building material mostly from Tokyo. Then you learned this was the Mothra Stewart show and this won Esther Friesner the Most Humorous award. Something unusual happened that the same person Chris Kramer won both the best hall costume award (for the mind boggling Night on Bald Mountain complete with mountain and demon) and Best of Show for the (goblin?) Fully articulated multi part costume of a member of the Night Watch. Stayed tuned for a little bit more about Rivercon in the next issue along with guest’s commentary on the last closing ceremonies. (sniff , sniff) Also next month hopefully reviews of Worldcon , my review of Outside con the biggest and better ever. ------------------------------------------------------- Chicon I hope to have several reviews of Chicon by the nest issue. Most of the people I talked with had a great time but were unhappy with various aspects of the convention. A lot of the snits were directed at the Hyatt and how it tried to nickel and dime (well actually dollars) over a variety of things. Congratulations to the Xerpes, Charlotte and Boston for winning best party of the night. Next issue also will bring some of the other awards presented such as the Sidewise and the Chelsey’s. ============================================ Upcoming Worldcons The Millennium Philcon have announced their hotel rates for thew 2001 Worldcon. http://www.netaxs.com/~phil2001/photconv.html#hotels: Philadelphia Marriott Single - $135.00 ,Double - $145.00 ,Triple - $160.00 ,Quad - $160.00 , Rollaways - $20.00 per stay phil2001@netaxs.com ------------------------------------------------------- Toronto won the bid for the 2003 Worldcon and would like fans to know that there will be no package delivery charges for packages delivered to the Toronto hotels. Fran Courtney Bray will be undergoing some foot surgery this week. Fran who didn’t go to WorldCon had a real rough weekend with her mother going into the hospital (she is back home now) with massive amounts of overtime at work. A note about Nancy Tucker Shaw: Nancy has really gone down and after a stay at the hospital she is now being moved to a nursing home. Even though cards are welcome by the family she really isn’t able to appreciate very much. But, according to Misti Anslin Tucker flowers still cheer her up. All greetings ect... should be sent through her son, Larry Tucker, at 2523 Torrey Ave,Ann Arbor, MI .Please remember Nancy and her sons in your prayers, thoughts, or meditations and please pass the word to her faanish friends throughout the world. A PS from Misti (Nancy’s daughter in law) Larry and his mother have always been extremely close and Larry is overwhelmed with his loss and with the responsibilities he's being forced to shoulder right now, so sympathy cards, notes, letters, etc for him would also do a whole lot of good. manslin@earthlink.net ------------------------------------------ Now for a couple of things that came in too late for the newsletter. Robert> Pat and I finally went to see X-men last night. Not a bad flick, well cast. Good stuff. A chance encounter with The National Inquirer in someone else’s bath room revealed to me that James Marsden (Cyclops) was married recently in Nashville's Union Station. You may be relieved his bride was not ten years older and red headed, but they *did* meet in school. No word from the Inquirer if there was "Disturbing Behavior" such as a bachelor party at the strip club next door. Oh yes, I keep forgetting to mention Stephen King was in Nashville over the summer for the wedding of his daughter. Also this guy by the name of Gore was in the plaza across from where I work this summer too. ------------------------------------------------------- from Frank Kaliz Hope everyone enjoyed our Xerps in 2010 party at Rivercon... We managed to drink 16 batches of our famous "Skip and Go Naked" drinks - That's a record!! Never underestimate the power of our alien brew... All it takes for a batch is a 12-oz can of limeade concentrate, a 12-oz can full of vodka, and four Keystone Light beers... Plus lots of ice and green glow-sticks, of course! Ours is the first serious Worldcon bid to be out of this world! We've now got a firm commitment for all of us to be abducted from a crop circle in northern Scotland. They'll pick us up at 12:00 noon (local time) on August 25, 2010... But negotiations are still pending for the return trip arrangements.. In the meantime, we've got lots of parties to throw!" Congratulations to Frank, Millie, Sherrie and all the Xerpes people on their winning the best party award for Friday night at Worldcon.
