The Thunder Gods - Part 4

Written by: William F. Nolan and Dennis Etchison

Rem reminds Logan of the painting of Washington crossing the great water and of the flag he proudly held . . . The tests, he says, are all based on a garbled version of American history relating to the four Presidents: First, Roosevelt’s charge up San Juan Hill, Lincoln’s freeing the slaves, Jefferson and the Declaration of Independence, Washington’s flag.

As a living computer, Rem was able to absorb all of these facts from his quick scan of the museum’s history books and documents.

"The sun!" Logan shouts—emerging from the cave to wave the flag at the tribe below.

But it is too late—as we see the sun dip behind the peak. Logan watches in horror as Wakan draws back the bowstring preparing to send an arrow into Jessica’s heart. Logan is powerless to prevent her death . . .

But Wakan never completes the execution. He is suddenly destroyed by a blast of fire from Logan’s flame-gun in the hand of Running Wind. The renegades rush forward from the forest to overrun the camp . . . as the Mountain People retreat from such deadly magic.

In a panic to reach Jessica, Logan slides down the cliff face, unaware that Rem is not following. Rem has reacted to a sound which leads him deeper into the cave.

Logan reaches the base of the mountain—to face his own weapon in the hand of the renegade leader. She tells Logan that he must die along with Jessica . . . but a voice freezes her.

"Enough death!" says the voice. "Enough war! The killing must stop!"

Running Wind looks up, recognizes the ancient figure emerging. She sobs, runs to embrace the ancient, stick-thin Indian (brought down from the mountain by Rem). This is the OLD ONE, found by Rem, hiding deeper in the cave. The old Chief had sent his only companion, the young brave, to pass a message of "peace" to Running Wind, but Wakan’s arrow had silenced the brave forever.

Many years ago, Wakan had sentenced the old man to death but he had survived, always fearful of the world below.

Running Wind believed that Wakan killed her father when he exiled her band. Now, thanks to the strangers, father and daughter are united, and peace has come to the Black Hills.

Logan tells them that they need no longer guard against radioactive clouds of war; the ‘Devil Clouds" will return no more and they need not continue to worship their mountain Gods. The stone images were men, not Gods, and can protect them from nothing; their strength lies within themselves. They must throw off superstition and embrace truth.

Logan, Jessica, and Rem start off again to seek Sanctuary in the Hovercar—which now proudly displays a "trophy" of their adventures among the Mountain People: a tattered American flag, flying from the bow of the craft.
