Moonlight Games
by Lady Raven

Disclaimer: The Buffyverse and all its characters belong to Joss Whedon. This story belongs to me, me, me! Each part is named after the song whose lyrics are featured in the ** **. Part One is by The Offspring. This is an indirect sequel (is that possible?) to 'Games were made for two' and set during the time I wrote it, between the episodes "BBB" and "Passion". It's strange, but all the stories I write about Angelus also seem to feature the darker side of Buffy's personality.

"Did you ever dance with the Devil in the pale moonlight?" Jack Nicholson as The Joker, "Batman" the movie

Part One: Gone Away

"Earth to Buffy, hello?" Xander snapped his fingers in front of her face.

"I'm staring into space, do you mind?" Buffy replied. Her words were sarcastic, but the tone was depressed.

Xander asked her gently "You wanna dance? I'll even do my John Travolta impression."

"No thanks" Buffy said, her voice empty.

**Maybe in another life I could find you there**

Xander sat down next to her trying not to show how worried he was. Buffy seemed to get more and more depressed with every day without Angel. The Slayerettes had all thought that she would start to get over it in time, but Willow had recently put into words what they were all thinking, but couldn't bring themselves to say. That Buffy would never recover. That she would waste away without Angel, until a monster would take her simply because Buffy didn't care whether she lived or died any more.

**Pulled away before your time

I can't deal

It's so unfair**

Earlier that day, Xander had overheard Willow tell Giles something that he had never considered-mostly because he couldn't imagine it.

"Giles, have any of the other Slayers committed suicide?"

"Willow, you don't think-" "I think that when she kills Angelus and there's no hope that Angel will ever come back, she won't want to live any more. Not without him. Buffy once told me that Angel understood her in a way that no one else ever could, because he was the only one who knew what it was like to be a predator, to be hunter and prey by turns. Loving him gave her strength, but living without his love just…drains her soul away, inch by inch."

Xander looked closely at Buffy now, and knew that Willow was right. He slipped away to get Willow and call Giles. They needed to come up with a way to get Angel back and fast, even if it meant that they all had to swallow their feelings and ask for help from Jenny Calendar.

**The world has grown cold

Now that you've gone away**

Because Buffy was racing to the edge, and Xander wasn't sure that she was going to stop herself from going over.
