Elven Secrets
Background: Eons ago elven refugees colonized the world of Mystara. They arrived in a huge semi-crystalline, semi-organic ship, capable of supporting its crew for the generational voyage that it took to reach the crystal sphere. Their ship being too large to land safely on the planet, the elves abandoned it in space where it fell into orbit around Ixion, the sun. The ship has been there ever since. It continues to grow and maintain a breathable atmosphere.
Plot: The Alphatian Empire has just recently discovered the existence of a green asteroid orbiting Ixion between Alphatia and Valerious. A small exploration craft piloted by Alphatians from Undresea and Thothia, on the Island of Dawn, made their discovery by accident when their ship malfunctioned and crash landed on the asteroid. Using pieces of the asteroid itself, the Alphatians were able to repair their ship and return to Mystara with their discovery.
The asteroid has many layers, as each of the space fairing civilizations over the centuries has found it. The deepest layer is that of the elves who piloted it into Mystaraspace. Then the Blackmoorians found it and set up a research station and minor outpost there. The Nithians did much the same thing. The Alphatians have the same idea, but they must establish a signifigant presence quickly before their secret gets out and the other nations mount expiditions of their own.
Alfheim elves, newly displaced from their homeland by the Shadow Elves, are interested in obtaining some land for themselves. They have hired bands of adventurers to infultrate the Alphatian expiditions and guarentee that the green asteroid falls into the hands of Alfheim.
The Glantrians, who have taken no interest in space travel so far, are very excited about what their spies have told them, although they don't show it to outsiders. They are plotting with the Heldannic Knights to take the asteroid by force. They believe that the asteroid contains ancient artifacts from Blackmoor (and they are right). The Brotherhood of the Radiance is very eager to get their hands on these artifacts, and they will stop at nothing to obtain their goals.
Thaytis, though they place little value on a small, inner system asteroid, are loath to let the Alphatians have anything that they want this badly. Although they don't have any wildspace fleet to speak of, they will send commandos to infultrate other expiditions or hire mercenary vessels to take them to their goal.
The Alphatians have more to worry about besides the other empires. The elven nation of Shiye-Lawr (presently in the Hollow World), who for the most part have not taken much interest in spacefairing, have suddenly become very intrigued with the artifacts brought back by the last expidition. Normally an introverted people, with the discovery of elven artifacts in space, the Shiye-Lawr elves may deciede to take a more active role in Alphatian politics.
