Early History: The Stone Age
Historical Novels and Fantasies
- Björn Kurtén: Dance of the Tiger; A beautifully done story about a Cro-Magnon
hunter, his interactions with the Neanderthals, and a fine description of a sabre-toothed tiger killing a baby
mammoth; interesting theory about what happened to the Neanderthals (they weren't neotenized or 'pretty'
enough to survive) -- this could be true because the author is a paleontologist.
- William Golding: The Inheritors; Another interpretation of the Cro-Magnons vs the
Neanderthals; Golding 'demonizes' the latter (hence our legends about trolls, ogres, etc.).
- Jean Auel: Clan of the Cave Bear, etc.; pure crap, but I did try to read it once.
