Chapter 2
“So lets hear this brilliant poem of yours.” I told Steve. Everyone chorused an agreement. As I listened to his Australian accent I thought about what happened before I left. I could have told Tobias about the Poets Society but, well, this was something very personal to me. I had few secrets from him and the few I did have I wanted to keep.
“Let’s hear yours.” I realized Steve had finished his poem.
“Ok.”
I took a deep breath. I knew this group would not laugh at my poem, I felt safe.
“When I hear that accent-” Anna teased. Oh she was gonna get it. Steve shifted uncomfortably. It was no secret I liked him but still. I thanked heavens above that Devon had a little of an English accent.
“This is not a poem about Devon ok?” I looked at her sternly. She smirked but was silent.
“Those blue eyes-” Anna stated wickedly. I silently resolved she would find something squishy in her desk on Monday. Devon had hazel eyes and Steve had blue. I pretended not to notice.
“For the last time this poem is not called Devon.” Just let her say it, she’ll be sorry. Strangely enough she started laughing. As her laughter vibrated though the cave I couldn’t help but join in. Suddenly, everyone started cracking up, even Steve. I don’t know what we were laughing at but I guess it didn’t matter. I was with friends; friends who didn’t need to save the world. For once the yeerks seemed like a bad dream.
“So what is the poem called anyway?” asked Amy. I got myself under control.
“The Hawk.” I said. I heard a squawk from outside. Everyone giggled everyone but me. I’d know that squawk anywhere.
Tobias! I thought to him. I told you not to come.
What’s the big deal? It’s just a bunch of poetry. I don’t know why but I got so mad. How dare he come here? This was the one time I got to be by myself and he just had to come.
Tobias just stay away from me! Go flirt with Rachel or something, just go! I heard a flapping of wings and he was gone. I knew I was being mean but I didn’t care.
“You know what guys? I have a better poem.”
