Chapter One
By: Zoë McCole and Kansas McBribe

TOBIAS

I was flying in the breeze, high above the trees. I was going to see Rachel. The last battle had upset her. It was the last battle she would ever fight. She was moving.

When I got there, I wasn't surprised to see tons of boxes pilled high. I flew to her window.

(Rachel? You here?) I called in thought-speak.

"Yeah, right here," I heard a voice say.

(You okay?)

"Yeah. I mean, we're just moving. That's all. Everyone moves, right?" she looked up at me. "I mean, you've moved plenty of times. Going back and forth from you uncles' and your aunt's. You're used to it; it will be okay, right?"

"Sure, it will be fine," I said with my human voice. I had morphed for her. She looked at me with her lovely blue eyes. "Take care, okay? You have nothing to save yourself from the Yeerks. Be careful."

"I'll be fine. Don't worry about me, I'm Xena; Warrior Princess. I can handle it. I'm talking with Jake, though."

"About what?"

"Seeing if I can keep using my morphing powers."

"Oh, cool. I better go. I don't want you get you grounded for having a boy in your room." I walked over to her, and gave her a hug. She squeezed back. I had thought earlier if I should kiss her, I decided to. I pushed her away, and she gave me an odd look. Then I leaned over.

Then it hit me. I can't kiss her! She was moving! I was already in position, so she thought I was going to. I realized that we would just want more touch, and we can't have more touch. It would be a crime to kiss her. I moved away and morphed. Rachel looked at me oddly.

"What's wrong?" she asked me, after I had morphed.

(Nothing. I'll miss you, Rachel. A lot,) I whispered.

I flew off, thinking of what I had done. Was she upset? Of course, she was upset. Who wouldn't be? I might never see her again. Never, EVER!

(Hello, Tobias,) Ax interrupted my thoughts.

(Oh, hey Ax. What are you doing this far from the woods?)

(Didn't you see me? I am in human morph. With Prince Jake and Marco. Oh, they say hi.)

(Hey Jake, hey Marco. Where are you guys going?)

(We're going to see Rachel for the last time,) Ax answered. What Ax said echoed through my head "We're going to see Rachel for the last time…" it made think that I would never see her again. Which was probably true. I felt a tingle go up my spine. "…See Rachel for the last time…"

(Chill, Tobias. You're just paranoid. Rachel wouldn't let that happen. Jake has her address, just in case. Don't worry about it,) I kept telling myself.

(See you later, Tobias!) Ax called, once more, and then left with Jake and Marco. I flew to Cassie's window. I looked to see what time it was on her clock, when she walked into her room.

"Hey, Tobias. Are you okay?"

(Yeah, I'm fine. I just saw Rachel, that's all. It's so upsetting to see her like this. She was crying by the time I left. To make matters worse, on the way home, I saw Ax with Jake and Marco. I asked him where they were going. He said, and I quote "We're going to see Rachel for the last time" that really got to me.)

"I know. It's hard for us all, but I guess it would be harder for you," she said.

(What do you mean?)

"Well, first of all, you've lost more then anybody we know, you've finally made friends, and then one moves away. Second of all, well, we all know you like her," she giggled.

(Wh ... what do you mean? I don't like her. Are you talking about the right person?) I lied. I really did like Rachel. And by like I mean LIKE.

"Don't worry, she likes you to," she giggled again.

(Anyway… what time is she leaving tomorrow?)

"Um… ten, I think. Yeah, it's ten."

(And, exactly where is she going?)

"Oh, she's moving to _______."

(What!! That's like, who knows how far! Crud! That is FAR!!!)

"You didn't know that? Man, we all thought she told you. I wonder why she didn't. Oh well. Not my business. Listen, I have to go help a horse. Oh, I'm going to help Rachel move tomorrow. Are you helping?"

(No, I can't see her again. not after what happened tonight,) I told her.

"What happened?" asked Cassie. I told her what happened with the kiss thing, and I had her swear she wouldn't tell anyone.

"Don't worry. If she is upset or mad, it will blow over soon."

(Thanks Cassie. Good night,) I said

"Night Tobias. And please, reconsider about coming. You know she wants to see you there. She'll miss you so much."

(I think about it.) I flew off into the night, to my favorite tree. I finally fell asleep. And I dreamt about Rachel.
