Vincent Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853. At the age of sixteen he went to work with his Uncle Vincent as an art dealer at the Goupil and Co. It was here that he first fell in love. Unfortunately she didn't feel the same way about him. Upset about his rejection, he began taking it out on his career by insulting the customers. After this behavior comtinued, the Goupil's manaers had to let him go. Being the son af a Lutheran Minister, Van Gogh thought that he too would like to be a minister. Although the ambition was there, he failed all his courses. He was sent to Belgium as a lay missionary instead. Once there, he tried to follow in his father's footsteps and attempted to fight poverty by teching the words of Christ. This attempt did not make his superiors happy. He stopped his fight and moved in with his father in Ettan. He then moved again to The Hauge. At the age of twenty-seven, Van Gogh considered himself a failure. His inability to hold a job hurt him financially and he turned to a career as an artist. Van Gogh's first marriage was to a woman named Christina, also known as Sein. She was a prostitute with one child and pregnant with another. For the fist few years they were happy with each-other but after that thigns began to slide and Van Gogh was once again alone. After being rejected once more and feeling as if no one cared abotu him, Vincent moved in with his brother Theo in Paris. It was here that he learned about different types of art. He learned abotu different colors and different painters. After living in Paris for about a year, Vincent decided it would be best if he left. Him and his brother were not getting alogn too well and no oen would but his art work. ![]() He then moved into his own house in Arles. He soon got lonely living in the house by himself so he wrote a letter to Theo asking him to ask his old painter friend Paul Gauguin if he would like to live with him. Gaugin agreed and moved in. In October of 1988, Van Gogh and Gauguin had an argument. Gauguin decided it would be best if he moved out for the night. Vincent followed him and threatened him with a knife. When he got home, he took the knife and cut off the bottom part of his own ear and then gave it to a prostitute as a "present". Van Gogh later began to have hallucinations of peopel trying to poison him. It was this that made him realize he was going mentally insane. He then sent himself to a mental hospital at Saint-Paul-De-Mausole. He left the assylum after staying for a while and he then moved in with Theo and his newly wed, Jo. After finding out that Jo was pregnant, he decided it would be best if he left. On July 27, 1890, Van Gogh got hold of a gun. He shot himself in the upper abdommen and then he laid by himself, bleeding to death. Theo found him the next morning and stayed with him until he died on July 29, 1980. He was then only thirty-seven. |
