Biography: the story as told

Julian Subatoi Bashir, at the young age of 32, has already seen and done more than what most people do in a lifetime. As a green medical officer fresh from the protective womb of Starfleet Academy Medical School, Bashir once could have been described as cheerful and even "bubbly". Known for his brash, self-important attitude at first, Bashir had long suffered deficiencies in interpersonal relationships, and he seemed particularly jinxed when it came to women. The good news for Julian was that social skills are never too late to develop, and for one with such natural kindness as Julian, it wasn't too long before he was well-liked and respected among his colleagues. It is mysterious indeed, how Bashir had not been known to maintain any long-lasting relations with anyone other than Chief O'Brien before he found favor in Ezri Dax's eyes.

In the course of his seven year assignment to Deep Space Nine, he has seen full-scaled war, the deceptions within the Federation and even the inside of a Dominion prison camp. Touched by the grime of reality's darker side, the doctor no longer appears to us as a wide-eyed innocent any longer, but as a man who has learned to live on and survive through the harshest of times. Here is a biography of the doctor from his early childhood to his seventh year as CMO of Deep Space Nine, presented as a tribute to the man whose unwavering support of humanitarian causes and the individual's well-being should be extolled and given due recognition.

Storm: Childhood Years

Storm A memory of events during an ionic storm on Ivernia II is the guiding force in Julian Bashir's life. Julian was just ten when he and his father, a Federation diplomat, were lost in the storm and came across a dying young Ivernian girl. Though his father went for medical help, it was too late. The girl died in front of his eyes. Later when Julian learned that a common herb growing nearby could have saved her life, the realization that the girl died needlessly would later influence his choice of pursuing medicine. [Melora]

Genius Young Julian had the makings of a doctor at an early age. He recollects that his teddy bear, affectionately called Kukalaka, was his first "patient". For a child who had the mind of a genius, Julian, (or Jules, as he was called) was quite sociable. He preferred to be mingle among children of professionals, and the inference drawn from such behavior is that he subconsciously felt he could learn more by associating with these children. When he accompanied his father for visits to other people's homes, he would discreetly slip into the library and start immersing himself in volumes of science and medicine. Quiet and unseen, Julian's interest was not revealed to his father until one time they were visiting some doctor friends who were discussing a new medical breakthrough. Julian had read up on it and, eager as always to glean more information, crept up and started asking questions about its technical procedure.

Surprised and perhaps a little annoyed with the boy who was asking questions faster than they could answer, the doctors were initially skeptical, but quickly came around to become impressed with the accumulated knowledge of the ten year old. Thus Julian was allowed to pursue his interests by sitting in at some of these doctors' informal gatherings. Though The doctors didn't do much more than tolerate his presence, Julian would make careful notes and look up references later to make up for being a silent observer at these meetings.

Contact Sports had always been a part of Julian's life. It was through a friend's accidental injury in a ballgame that the twelve year old boy had a first-hand look at the inner workings of a hospital. After his friend was admitted, Julian and the rest of his companions sat in the waiting room, where Julian tried to comfort a couple with a sick baby by pointing out the efficiency and advanced technology of the hospital. Julian was so taken by the whole atmosphere of the medical center that he consequently became their most frequent visitor, usually not out of illness! The hospital staff tried their hardest to get rid of him, but persistence won him the resignation of the staff and he was given simple tasks such as cleaning the waiting room and getting drinks for the visitors. By carefully stepping out of the way of the doctors and staff while doing useful work, Julian was given increasingly more freedom.

Crisis An explosion in the city suddenly filled the ER with critically injured patients. After listening to a doctor repeatedly calling for nurses who were not available, Julian gingerly stepped up to offer assistance, wholeheartedly expecting a harsh reprimand. The doctor paused to look at him, then told him to quickly scrub in and join him by the side of a patient.

Moments later, Julian was by the doctor, handing him instruments whose names he had learned from books. He helped wheel out stabilized patients to take in new ones, wipe the sweat off the battling doctors, and cover the faces of the dead. In six hours, he had seen both life and death. He sat exhausted in the waiting room, organizing his chaotic emotions when the doctor who'd first allowed him to help came and sat down next to him. He thanked the boy and assured him that he had saved lives on that day who would have otherwise died. Looking down at his blood stained surgery scrubs, the boy weakly tried to thank him, but the image of a girl too badly injured to save that day haunted his thoughts. The girl seemed to be another reminder of the Ivernia incident and though this time there was nothing he could do, he hated the thought that death could overtake so young a life. This event strengthened his resolve to pursue medicine even more.

Medical: Starfleet Academy

Stars Though medicine was Julian's dream, the allure of the stars also beckoned him to answer. After his parents took him for an offworld tour of the galaxy in his teenage years, Julian realized that the opportunities in space meant he could do more there than if he had just remained on Earth. Julian was especially fascinated by the alien lifeforms he'd seen during the trip. When he applied for Starfleet Medical, he probably already knew he'd specialize in alien physiology. Accustomed to learning by self-study, Julian didn't wait for Starfleet to teach him but delve right back into the books again.

Paris In retrospect, it was his determination to join Starfleet that would end his chance at a family life. Julian met and fell in love with the ballerina Palis Delone while in Paris. They were engaged to marry and her father, who headed a local hospital, had offered him a chance to become chief of surgery within five years. Julian turned him down due to his firm resolve to join Starfleet. This ended his relationship with the ballerina and her family. He had never seen nor heard of her since, but years later, Julian still regretted having to choose one over the other and wondered what might have been. [Armageddon Game]

Medical At Starfleet Academy Julian trained not only in medicine, but also took extended courses in engineering, knowledge that would prove to be critical in later years of service at Deep Space Nine. Bashir worked to become a well rounded officer by taking engineering extension courses and improving his tactical skills, phaser marksmanship and even melee ability. The required reading from Academy days helped him recognize the mirror universe instantly, which proved to be critical in his later days. [Shattered Mirror]

While taking courses in Starfleet Medical, Julian came in contact with the works of illustrious authors on xenobiology. Warp engine inventor Zephram Cochran, who had an prolonged lifespan due to an alien entity "the Companion", was an expert in space medicine as applied to alien lifeforms. Leonard McCoy, legendary chief medical officer of the first Enterprise, was of course also included in his studies. Commander Selar, who served for a time on the Enterprise under Jean-Luc Picard, taught a class in Vulcan physiology, another important subject.

During his years in medical school, Bashir kept diaries revealing his fear of failure, his drive to graduate at the top and to have a successful career in Starfleet. His ingenuity and relentless research resulted in a nutrition bar he designed in med school whose nutritional value was even higher than that of Starfleet combat rations. It is most interesting to note that he was first in his class in pediatric medicine. [The Siege]

Always agile and physically conditioned, Bashir was a star player in racquetball, serving as captain of the Starfleet Medical School team when it won the sector championship his last year there in 2368-69. That he defeated a Vulcan in the finals further attests to his superior physical abilities. For eight years Julian Bashir studied medicine, making sure he was well prepared to deal with any medical problems that may arise. He graduated with the highest honors, was nearly valedictorian, but still made inroads with women, a secondary interest. [Rivals]

Failing Julian loved women and women were equally drawn by his dark good looks. His charming personality and distinctive accent made many a heart flutter, but Julian simply did not know how to talk to women. If the woman in question were not a medical student like himself, he'd bewilder her with a night of nonstop technobabble. Even after he graduated and was posted on Deep Space Nine, this problem still persisted, especially noticeable when he talks at length about the question that denied him the valedictorian: The misidentification of a pre-ganglionic fiber for a postganglionic nerve. Watch the date's eyes glaze over when he explains, "The stuff salutatorians are made of." It took O'Brien's brotherly advice to finally get Bashir to see his own failing and get rid of his preoccupation with THE question. After some seasoning on the station, Julian no longer gives the impression of being annoyingly himself.

Frontier: Deep Space Adventure

Frontier That Julian had graduated second to his class meant he could choose just about anywhere he wanted to begin duty. Elizabeth Lense, the woman who finished ahead of him chose the favorite of Starfleet graduates, the U.S.S. Lexington. For Julian, though, Deep Space Nine, the most far-flung outpost of the Federation, was the height of adventure. He first came aboard looking pleased as he can be--all energy and unrestrained enthusiasm. Proclaiming the station "a place where heroes are made" probably made some of his colleagues feel uneasy about the young lieutenant of jr. grade. Major Kira sarcastically replied to his enthusiastic exclamations, "I'm sure you'll find the locals a friendly folk." But his enthusiasm really stems from the realization of all his dreams: practicing medicine in the frontier of deep space. [Emissary]

Determined to be the best doctor that he could be, Julian was troubled by the state of the Infirmary when he first arrived at the station. It was left in complete disrepair after the retreat of the Cardassians, and Julian had the formidable task of restoring the inoperative place into an efficient medical facility. He constantly requests supplies and equipment upgrades so that though he is stationed in the farthest-flung outpost of the Federation, his patients can still receive the best care and treatments available.
What a Doc!

Dax En route to his first assignment on DS9, he was smitten by the beautiful Trill science officer Jadzia Dax. His attraction to her was made very plain by his faltering, stuttering speech addressed to her, but it was more the exterior of Jadzia than the 229 year old symbiont Dax that was the draw. He pursued her with his dogged persistence, but after months of Platonic meetings and mild rebuffs, he finally realized he was getting nowhere and was content to remain friendly colleagues. Quirks of Jadzia's symbiotic state have caused many conflicting moments for the Doctor. When he was forced at gunpoint to surgically remove Dax, he overcame all odds to keep her alive until Dax was restored to Jadzia. He later saved her again, taking the risk with Sisko to uncover the Joran Belar scandal at the Symbiosis Commission on Trill. Jadzia had shared a special relationship with the young doctor, giving him timely advice and nominating him for the Carrington Award in 2371.

Garak On DS9, Bashir soon developed a strong friendship with Cardassian ex-spy-turned-Promenade-clothier Garak, hitting it off immediately with the eloquent former spy and his mysterious air. In ongoing debates at their weekly Replimat lunches, the discussions have covered comparative literature, drama, philosophy and politics. Bashir saved his life when Garak's cranial implant caused toxic build-up resulting from efforts to break dependence on pleasure endomorph the implant released. Along the way Bashir confirmed Garak's former career as an outcast spy when he braved the former Obsidian Order chief Enabran Tain to get Cardassian medical data needed to synthesize leukocytes. Garak is a patriot of Cardassia, though he is dishonored and forever exiled. In the chance opportunities where he might have redeemed himself, Garak took steps he thought were for the good of a strong Cardassia, albeit his name might be further blackened for his actions. He killed a high-ranking officer of the Central Command rather than let him murder the young renegades who are the hope of a democratic Cardassia.

Though Garak introduced himself as a plain, simple tailor, there was much more to this smooth-speaking Cardassian, amply evident in later events. His connection with Tain of the Obsidian Order had always been strongly suspected, but no one ever knew exactly what function Garak had served while in the Order. In later years, the mystery and intrigue surrounding Garak slowly evaporated with the passing of events that confirmed his close ties to the Obsidian Order. When Enabran Tain was drawing his last breath, it was revealed that Tain, no less, was the father of Garak. As to why Garak was exiled, nothing had ever been substantiated, though the tailor himself declared it was "tax problems".

Of late, the two seemed to have drifted in terms of closeness. Though Bashir had always liked the tailor, he never trusted him, and after the incident in the holosuites

O'Brien Chief engineer Miles O'Brien, first seen in the Enterprise-D's transporter rooms, initially found Julian to be a constant reminder reminder of his own older age. Grudging the doctor for remarks that to his ears were needles pricking his pride, they did not hit it off right away. While playing racquetball, the younger and fitter doctor consistently beat the engineer by an embarrassing margin. Once while grumbling his frustrations at the bar, he gave Quark inspiration for a very underhand idea. Quark tricked them into playing for a charity event to buy blanket for Bajoran war orphans, not because he really had charitable motives, but to promote his establishment. The grudge match was billed Miles "The Mechanic" O'Brien versus Julian "The Doctor" Bashir. Quark hosted the betting, and it was no accident that everyone placed bets on the Doctor. When the match begun, the Mechanic had established a commanding lead when both realized something was not right. Every ball was bouncing right back into O'Brien's hands, an anomaly that was almost impossible statistically. The match was stopped, and postponed till later while they investigate the cause.

Over the years, Julian and Miles developed a mutual respect and understanding, though it seemed hardly likely at first. These two had even "died" together when they vanished in an attempt to destroy a deadly biogenic weapon. The two had also been targeted for death, along with the scientists who had knowledge of the deadly "Harvesters" virus. Miles was infected with the plague, forcing him to bond with Julian while they waited for rescue, which thankfully arrived just in time.

While O'Brien is all grit and reality, having little patience for the finer points of life, the two work well together and have become the odd couple on the station. When Keiko, O'Brien's wife, left DS9 for extensive botanical surveys of Bajor, the two were thrown together nearly all the time. They counted the days by games of racquetball and darts played together.

In their various adventures together, the two have often taken risks to protect the well-being of the other. However, the incident with the Jem'Hadar, when Dr. Bashir was forced to find a cure for Ketracel-White addiction, had split the formerly inseparable pair. Irreconcilable conflict between Dr. Bashir's medical professionalism and O'Brien's common sense caused a rift that has yet to be repaired fully.

Melora Ensign Melora Pazlar was unusual even in Starfleet. An Elasian, she hailed from an alien race who, because of a low surface gravity, have the ability to "levitate". Ensign Pazlar must sit in a low gravity field actuator that counters the station's artificial gravitation while onboard. She came aboard from the U.S.S. Yellowstone on Stardate 47229.1 to do a series of studies in the Gamma Quadrant. Julian was assigned to help her adjust to the Station, taking her out for Klingon food and sampling other delicacies (one has to wonder if he were just waiting to see her reaction to these exotic foodstuffs). She didn't bat a lash when presented the Klingon "gagh" but surprised Julian by playfully chided the chef for serving her half-dead mealworms. Julian fell in love with her and she was in turn attracted to him enough to admit him into her microgravity chamber where they danced in the air.

Melora sought the advice of Dax about the advisability of interspecies relationships, and Dax noted that though the symbiont had gone through 150 years without a lasting romance, there had been success stories, including the hydrogen-breathing Lothra who fell in love with an Oxygene. Together for 57 years, the two were limited to 40 minutes of direct contact each day without a breathing apparatus.

Julian used a neurostimulator therapy developed by Nathaniel Tarros for neuro-muscular adaptation. Though Melora was responding wonderfully to his skillful care and treatments, she ultimately decided to stop the treatments. If Melora were to adapt to the Terran gravitation levels, she would no longer be able to fly in Elasia with her family and friends. To Melora, remaining in her chair was preferable to losing her identity as an Elasian. Even though saddened by her decision to leave him, Julian would still be able to publish a paper on his work applying Tarros' research from 30 years before to combine the neurostimulators with the neo-eleptic transmitters. This application allowed for neuro-muscular increases in tensile strength, thereby allowing the body to support itself in gravity much higher than Elasian physiognomy would normally permit.

The Dominion War: A War that changed the Federation

Healer Tensions with the Gamma Quadrant power known as the "Dominion" began at first contact. With their readily available Jem'Hadar soldiers, the Dominion's menacing threat cast a pall over the daily lives of citizens aboard Deep Space Nine. However, when put to the test, Julian stays true to the Hippocratic Oath he honors as a medical doctor, regardless of politics or even his own personal feelings. Returning from a planetary survey in the Gamma Quadrant, Julian and Chief O'Brien were captured by a group of renegade Jem'Hadar when their runabout crashed into an M-Class planet. when faced with the choice of working on a cure from Ketracel White addiction for the Jem'Hadar (who would soon run out of Ketracel White), Julian adamantly refused to run away and let the Jem'Hadar die on the planet [Hippocratic Oath]. Ultimately, Julian was thwarted by O'Brien's pressure to leave the planet, but his sympathies clearly lie with the suffering and oppressed, even if they are his enemies. When a second time he encounters a world suffering from a Dominion-affliction known as he "Quickening", Julian set to work quickly, and found a cure which gave him no little fanfare in the medical community. [The Quickening] For his work, Julian would be invited to attend top-flight medical conferences and give speeches on the disease and its treatment. [Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges]

Revelations Julian was very dexterous with darts, racquetball, and sports in general. He had been a super smart kid too. What Julian didn't want to remember was that his parents had illegally given their son genetic enhancements at a young age. When Doctor Zimmerman came aboard Deep Space Nine to use Julian as a model for a new Emergency Medical Hologram program, Julian's dark secret was dragged into the light. In order to profile Julian psychologically, Dr. Zimmerman extended an invitation to Julian's parents, Amsha and Richard Bashir. When they approached the identical holographic copy of their son, they inadvertently revealed their son's genetic alterations.

Though Julian had "gifts" that he could have used to great advantage, in reality, it had been more of a psychologically crippling condition than anything else. From early on, Julian was plagued by self-doubt and bitterness about his parents decision all his life. At the age of six, Julian was considered slow and retardant in development, so his parents secretly took their son for enhancements of mental skills, and body coordination out of the purest love. When Julian was able to gauge the enormity of what had happened, he could never shake off the disturbing feeling that his parents had rejected the original Julian. However, when knowledge of Julian's condition was revealed, there were far graver consequences than hard feelings. Starfleet had long ago outlawed genetic recoding due to the hard lessons learned from the Eugenics Wars, when enhanced super humans wreaked havoc on the world. Julian was very fortunate not to have sustained any adverse side-effects, because the genetic enhancements might easily have damage a person's mental state permanently. For every Julian Bashir, there are several more Kahns waiting in the wings.

Suddenly, everyone understood why Julian missed the pre-ganglionic fiber question that cost him of the valedictorian. O'Brien realized Julian had thrown dart games repeatedly, and their buddy-buddy relationship never recovered from this reeling blow. After the initial stunning news, people started wondering just how much of the doctor's brilliance was actually his. This was exactly the sort of undermining thought that had never for a moment left Julian in peace. All his life, Julian had been repenting for his unfair advantage over others by losing. Julian had managed to stay undetected for so long because he had tried to minimize his advantage, strenuously avoiding the use of his special powers.

The situation had forced Julian to tender his resignation, but his father, Richard, declared he would take responsibility for all that had transpired. Richard Bashir offered to take his son's place in prison so Julian might continue his career in Starfleet, which had come to mean much more to the young doctor than he had realized. In the end, the Bashir family was fully reconciled with its past.

Massacre The Dominion War started when the Federation mined the entrance to the wormhole in an effort to stop Dominion reinforcements from building up in the Alpha Quadrant. In response, the Dominion, along with their Cardassian allies, launched a devastating attack on Deep Space Nine that resulted in the withdrawal of Federation presence from Deep Space Nine, which became Terok Nor again after the takeover. Julian accompanied the rest of his demoralized crew on the Defiant, which rendezvoused with a fleet of 600 Federation ships at Starbase 325 for a massive effort to retake Deep Space Nine. The Federation suffered tremendous losses, with many of the fleets it sent to engage the Dominion wiped out or crippled severely. Julian, who has not known such suffering and death ever, grew more quiet and despondent during these days on the Defiant. [A Time to Stand]

Spy Julian had been known to be fond of spy holosuite programs, where he enacts the role of the suave, sophisticated, womanizing spy in the James Bond tradition [Our Man Bashir]. But could he actually be a spy in life? Sloan questioned Bashir and cast doubt on his credibility with several piercing questions about his time in Internment Camp 371. Sloan then followed this up by recounting the history of his deliberate deception concerning his genetic status. Bashir had indeed been set up to look like a Dominion spy, but in the end Julian noticed a discrepancy in O'Brien's physical condition that gave away the charade. He had been taken into a holosuite to be "recruited" into Section 31, a secret intelligence agency operating outside of the Federation, with Sloan a prominent leader. The agency was unsure of Bashir's authenticity (he may have been a Changeling) and had put him through the test to determine his true identity. After his identity was established, Sloan extended an invitation for him to realize his fantasy and actually live the life of a spy -- for the Federation. [Inquisition]

Tears Jadzia, ever beautiful, lost her heart to Worf and married him while in the thick of the Dominion War. On the day he left on the Defiant to join the Chin'Toka battlefront, Jadzia had joyfully talked of having a baby, and went to the Bajoran shrine to pray for the arrival of one. However, she was killed by a pagh-wraith possessed Dukat, who had come to destroy the Orb of Prophecy at the Shrine. Julian, stricken with grief, still managed to care for Jadzia one last time by removing the Dax symbiont for its next Trill host. The loss of Jadzia Dax affected everyone very deeply, especially to the senior staff who had worked with her for six years. Julian grieved for his friend, whose life was cut short by an outside force she could not control. [Tears of the Prophets]

Section 31 Julian would have more dealings with the elusive Section31. Sloan enlisted his help during the medical convention held on Romulus, where Julian had been invited to give a lecture on the Quickening. Sloan wanted him to gather data on the Romulan leadership while he was at the convention, and idea which Julian promptly rejected and would only accepted when Sisko advised Bashir to play along and learn more about Section 31. At the conference, Sloan asked Bashir is to diagnose the head of the Tal Shiar, Koval, whom Sloan had already suspected to have contracted a slow degenerative disease called Tuvan syndrome. From the questions Sloan asked, it became apparent that he was planning to use the disease as a means to assassinate Koval, by way of irradiating the Chairman with radiation and accelerating the disease's progress. Recognizing the implications of such a plot, Julian turned to the only friendly Romulan he knew, Senator Cretak, for help. Cretak's subsequent actions led to her arrest and expulsion from the Romulan senate, when evidence surfaced that Sloan was plotting against Koval. Julian later learned that Sloan had set up the Senator so she would be taken off the Senate. When he realized Admiral Ross had known about the plot, Julian's naive faith in the Federation took a great blow. [Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges]

When it became clear Odo had been infected by Section 31 so that he would act as a carrier for the disease and spread it to other Changelings, Julian's sense of ethics and morality overcame all his other feelings of fear and doubt. He must find a cure for Odo and thwart Section 31 in its attempted genocide. With help from O'Brien, the two lured Sloan to Deep Space Nine and attempted to coerce the cure from him. Sloan then activated a poisoning agent orally and nearly died before Julian just managed to stabilize him -- temporarily. Unwilling to give up, even at Sloan's imminent death, Julian talked O'Brien into using a Romulan mind probe to go into the mind of Sloan and extract the cure in virtual reality. At the last possible moment, when Sloan's body began to collapse into final death, Sloan tried to tempt Julian to stay with his offerings of all Section31 dealings and files. Julian's spying itch came into play, but O'Brien's sensible presence prevented Sloan from succeeding, and the two escaped into reality with the cure for Odo. [Extreme Measures]

Ezri and Beyond: The future looks bright

End The War ended with inconceivably heavy losses on all sides. The Romulan fleet had been demolished during the final campaign, the Federation and the Klingon Empire collectively lost millions of officers and soldiers, the Cardassians were left with 800 million dead, and the Dominion was equally devastated. Julian beamed down to Cardassia Prime soon after the Dominion had surrendered, and there he and Garak met for perhaps the last time in their lifetimes. On the ground, surrounded by desolation and death, Julian felt overwhelmed by the senseless loss of life and felt compassion for his Cardassian friend, who had so looked forward to returning to Cardassia from exile. For Garak, only ashen waste and a charred world welcoms his return. Cardassia had lost so many of its finest, and Garak wondered if it could ever rise again to the height of its glory once again. [What You Leave Behind]

But the war was over. For that, Julian, as did everyone else involved in the drawn-out affair, was immensely grateful. A new day dawned when the Dominion threat at last did not shadow the lives of the people in the Alpha Quadrant.

Ezri For Julian, the death of Jadzia will always pain him. The times they chatted on the Replimat, worked together in Ops or the Defiant, the holosuite mental exercises will always be fond memories. But the bitter taste that once accompanied those memories is giving way to an old love. He was in love with Dax again, only this time, it was with Ezri. The eight host of the Dax symbiont, Ezri had unwillingly joined with Dax when the symbiont faced a medical emergency before it arrived at Trill. Lt. Ezri Dax came aboard Deep Space Nine as a counselor, and she had big shoes to fill. Though she can never replace Jadzia, as Garak observed, Ezri has made her own niche among the crew. Julian and Ezri almost instantly connected, and despite some twists and turns in the beginning of their relationship, finally ended up in each other's arms with the blessing of everyone on board. For the foreseeable future, Julian will continue to function as CMO of Deep Space Nine until he is transferred elsewhere. With Ezri, Kira, and Quark still there, Julian will feel less of a pang when he finds no one to play the Alamo model with him.

Julian came to Deep Space Nine searching for adventure and frontier medical challenges. With his sparkling personality and sense of humor, he did not fit anyone's idea of a good doctor, but looks are deceiving in his case: Julian could not be more serious about medical practice--he just enjoys every minute of it.
