Well, I had ta laugh when reading your page, cos I'd just been watching Captain O'Hara, the police captain from that old Batman series, and the dialogue sorta sounded like that. Anyways... I just thought I'd add a note, to say that I'm a direct descendant of one of the old Celtic bards to the court of the old High Kings of all Ireland, in the ancient capital of Tara, co. Meath. Uí Ríoghbhardáin is the older form of my surname. Sa ly, now, the links are lost, and I don't know much about my ancestors, and my family lives at the very southern part of the Irish Republic. The dialogues that you imagine, are referring to the time, when the Irish had to translate from Gaelic into English It was considered that the English language lacked the sublety of meaning that they wished to convey, and it was considered crude for people to speak directly. Therefore, they used English words in a construction which would allow them to express themselves more clearly, although it didn't usually work. Therefore only a few phrases remain through English. The Irish still attempt to compensate for the lack of clarity when trying to express something in the continous present tense, in English. However, since fluency in English has been achieved (chiefly )in the last 100 years or so, these quaint phrases are only heard in Hollywood. |
