Notes (House Rules)-- Literacy in the Vergotha campaign world is considered a M/A skill and not an advantage.

Magical Aptitude in the Vergotha rule system allows mages to skip some prepreq spells.  A person with Mager +1 may skip a single spell that does not require Magery.  A person with magery may skip a single non-Magery spell or a single Magery +1 spell.  A person with Magery +3 may skip any two non-Magery +3 prereq spells.

Notes (Character)--Janelle Thornheart is the last of the Thornheart line.  The line was once a very respected and prominent line in the Copeland area, known for their mastery of magery.  The strange, and rather disturbing, family name derives from when the founder of the line, Jemais, came across a hart trapped in a thorn wall.  Jemais slew the hart with his bow and took the incident as a surname, founding the House of Hart-In-Thorns.  The name has changed over the years, including such derivatives as Heart-of-Thorns, Heartthorn and finally, Thornheart.

Janelle enrolled in both the Vergotha Imperial of Magic and later the academy in Barad'dur.  Afterwards she also learned physician skills to supplement her mostly battle oriented spells.  Returning to Cope she put her skills to use as a healer and often hired out as a mercenary spellblade.  During an encounter in which she cornered a bandit, she caught her quary in a Fire Cloud and killed him.  With his dying breath he cursed Janelle.  The curse stuck and she's suffered since.

Where once she had been a successful teacher, researcher and physician in the Cope area she is now sturggling to survive.  All of her students have left her and and physician clientelle have moved to other healers.  Her powerstones were stolen as well and she has spent the last of her money to buy a few new ones.

In hopes of lifting her curse, Janelle has embarked on a quest to learn more about her late opponent in order to appease his restless spirit (which comes to haunt her and push her along from time to time).

To date she has discovered the name of the man she killed and that he had been searching for a younger brother.  The younger brother disappeared some years earlier at the age of nine, possibly kidnapped and sold into slavery.

Janelle hopes to soon embark on a journey to find the younger brother and return him to his family, if the curse doesn't get her first.

Notes (Gameplay)--Janelle is a psychotic battlemage with a complex personality.  As an NPC there are a number of things that a GM can use her for.  For starters she can be retailered into a number of specialities, including Elementalist, Necromancer, Enchanter, etc.  Janelle's Curse may be removed and her quirks upgraded to Disadvantages.  An optional Disadvantage/Quirk may be Delusion, thinking that those she has killed in the past are haunting her.

Janelle would also make a good Overlord in the making, give her Strong Will, Charisma, up her stats, etc.  The great thing about making Overlord characters is that you can get away with most anything.

Janelle may be looking for help in finding the lost brother of the mercenary that she was cursed by; a teacher of magic, willing to teach any spell for a price; a hired battlemage, enchanter, etc.
