Midnight Dance

As the moon
Wheels high in the sky
Candles burn in the streets
Bright as the souls
Of the gathering people

Pipes start to play
Followed by the beat
Of calfskinned drums
The stream of strings
The singing voices of the natives

Dozens and hundreds gather round
Called by the enticing sounds
They start to move
With the rhythm
Of the World

A midnight dance
To lighten the soul
To make you forget
The day and its worries
Let yourself go
Come on already
Don't you hear what I say?
Join the dance
Allow your body to flow
Start it slow

Partners join together forming
Couples in the square
Unspoken words exchanged
Vows forgotten
Only one purpose
To find another
And join the Midnight Dance
But you can work alone need be

What are you waiting for
Join us upon the floor
Dancing upon the world
Such a glad and natural
Thing to do
Feel the throb of the drums
Match the beat of your heart

Don't look for the sun
For us this eternal night
There is only the blazing bath
Of the moon's light
And the tender shining of the stars

See the colors all around you
People white, brown, and other shades
During the dance they all fade to one
Wigs of blue, red, and even green
Flowers hanging from the skies
Accented in such bright fires
Their scent the only true perfume

Smell the air
It is cool, clear, and crisp
The smells of freshness
And the scents of bodies
Muskiness

Body against body
Gyrating and moving
Twisting together like
Snakes and vines
Each so smooth
Pressed together
The hot and sweaty bodies
How sweet

Now that you've heard me
Tell you the sight
Isn't it time you followed suit
Wear your crosses
But leave moral arguments
Where they belong
Lying in the gutter
We're here to make love
Not to be dulled
The sights are sharp as a blade
To your open mind
Let the wonders pour in
And welcome, all ye children
To the Midnight Dance
The dance of life!
