Ode to Thurgood Marshall

I start looking
At the world around me
And I start to see
Then I ask myself
How can this be?

I start to wonder
At the life around me
And I start to wonder
How can I get out?
Will I ever break free?
I can't stand it no more
I need to be free
I need to be me

Free expression,
I take it for granted
Free expression, others are trying
To take it away from me
Don't I have rights?
Do I need to be rich to be someone?
I'm not, I don't want to be

Just give me a chance
To be who I am
Let me speak
You may not like what
I have to say
It's your right not to like
But it's my right to say
What's on my mind

You can respond, too
We both have rights
Don't take away mine
I won't take away yours
And tomorrow we just might be happy
