Name: Scott Summers
First Appearence: X-Men #1 (1963)
Hailed as the "greatest leader of the X-Men", Cyclops was the first X-Man. His mutant ability to project optic blasts, first manifested itself when he fell from a plane with his brother Alex (Havok). They shared the only parachute, while their parents seemingly perished in the fiery crash. As the parachute lit on fire, Cyclops used his optic blast to slow their descent, saving their lives. Orphaned along with his brother, Scott Summers grew up in an orphanage secretly run by Mr. Sinister. When his brother got adopted he was utterly alone and unwanted in the world.
Xavier brought Scott to his school, and soon realized that Scott's optic blast was not his only talent. Taking the name Cyclops, Scott became the X-Men's leader at the age of eighteen. He led the X-Men for many years through disaster and sucess, always striving to uphold the sacred dream. During this time he met his future wife, Jean Grey. After a time they made their love known and the two shared a deep relationship. Whereas Angel and Wolverine were certainly more open and extravagant with their advances, Scott was timid and kept his emotions within him. Foretunetly Jean saw past this outer facade and loved Scott for his inner goodness.
During their first space adventure to combat the mad Sh'iar dictator D'Ken, Scott learned that his mother and father had not died in the plane crash. Instead they had been beamed form the plane by an alien ship. They were enslaved for many years and seperated. His father, Major Christopher Summers, became the leader of the galactic pirates: the Starjammers. His mother died as a slave to D'Ken, but it is rumored that it may have been her who had a son with D'Ken. If so this child is most likely Adam X, who has often been hinted at to be Scott and Alex's brother.
When Jean Grey, really the Phoenix Entity, appeared to have commited suicide on the moon, he became thoroughly depressed. During his depression he met a pilot named Madelyne Pryor. Unknown to both Scott and Madelyne, she was the clone of Jean Grey created by Mr. Sinister. Scott unwittingly fell in love with her because she reminded him of his one true love, Jean. They were married and he left the X-Men under Storm's leadership. Their child was named Nathan Summers and for a time they lived happily in Alaska away from the X-Men as a real family. Their tranquility did not last long.
Also while married to Madelyne, Scott met his daughter Rachel Summers from the future. A future where her whole family, Scott included, had been slaughtered by the Sentinals.
When Mr. Fantastic discovered a cocoon at the bottom of the New York Bay, the true Jean Grey was revealed to be alive. The effect was devestating. Scott left Madelyne and Nathan to be with Jean and joined the rest of the original X-Men to form X-Factor. During their tenure with X-Factor, Scott and Jean learned that Madelyne was really a clone of Jean who had gained the Phoenix Force when the Phoenix Entity commited suicide on the blue part of the moon. Madelyne refused to be manipulated by Mr. Sinister and died in a blaze of self-righteous glory.
Jean and Scott now became Nathan's parents. Sadly, this tranquility was fleeting, again. Nathan was infected with the techno-virus. Scott had no way to treat the virus and was given the choice of either letting his son die or sending him into the future and never see his son again. Though the descision was heart breaking Scott chose to save his son and gave him to the time traveller Askani.
When Charles Xavier returned from his sabatical on Sh'iar to combat the Shadow King, X-Factor fought beside him. After the battle, the five originals re-joined the X-Men. Cyclops became leader of the X-Men's blue team. Psylocke was a member of that team, whereas Phoenix was a member of the gold team. A flirtation commenced as Scott and Jean's bond grew more and more strained. When innocent flirtation became not-so innocent, Scott left Jean and the X-Men.
Not only was his love life falling apart but he began to question whether the insane villian Stryfe was really baby Nathan come back for revenge. Retreating to Alaska he confronted his emotions and discovered that his love for Jean was stronger than ever.
Shortly following his return, Jean asked him to marry him. After many long years of heart-ache, struggles and sadness their dreams were finnaly realized. Their wedding came off perfectly. Their honey-moon however, was one rough ride. While relaxing at the beach their very esscenses were dragged into the future. Finding themselves in bodies of their descendants, they awoke in a world ruled by Apocalpse, some 3,000 years in the future. It was their daughter Rachel, Phoenix II, who had brought them there. She had become the Mother Askani, leader of a rebel group fighting to overthrow Apocalypse. Thrust into the middle of conflict Scott saved baby Nathan from Apocalypse's forces. Scott became a real father to Nathan, though Nathan did not know that it was him. Scott's name became Slym and Jean's became Redd. There in the future they finnaly defeated Apocalpse but more importantly they learned Nathan's identity in their original era. Nathan Summers had become Nathan Dayspring, the Chosen One... Cable.
Their peace lasted longer this time, and for the first time they were a family: Scott, Jean, Nathan and Rachel. Before Nathan was fully grown they were forced to abandon him again as they were pulled back through time. Though they knew Cable was the boy they raised they did not tell him untill they believed the world was coming to an end. To their surprise, Nathan, a telepath, already knew.
After the Age of Apocalpse, Scott met his genetically engineered son Nate Grey from the AoA. At roughly the same time, he was forced to attack his mentor Charles Xavier who was at the time Onslaught. After these unpredicted evens unfolded Scott found himself abanndoned as leader of the X-Men when Xavier was taken into custody by the government. Though Jean attempted to help him carry the new burden, it was a difficult expectation for a man who had already given so much of his life to the X-Men.
When Operation: Zero Tolerance was launced Scott found himself kidnapped along with several other X-Men. Unkown to him, Bastion implaned a bomb within Scott's stomach so that incase they escaped they would all die as he exploded. Dr. Reyes was able to remove the nano-tech bomb and save Scott's life but the strain was too much for his system. Leaving the X-Men in the hands of Storm and Wolverine, Scott and Jean have left for Alaska to live a normal life and recuperate...
