Name: Remy LeBeau
First Appearence: Uncanny X-Men #266
At a very young age Remy LeBeau found himself alone in the city of New Orleans. Whether his parents had been killed or abanndoned him is not clear. In any case, the small boy was found by a thief. The thief was leader of the theifs guild of New Orleans and he adpoted Remy. The guild's history had since its creation been intertwined with that of the assasin's guild. The two were mortal enemies. It was in this never ending fued that Remy grew up. Trained as a thief, the young boy quickly learned the trade and became a master of the art.
After a time Remy took notice of Bella Donna Boudreaux, an assasin. The two became lovers. Hoping to bring peace to the guilds the two decided to be married. The plan might have worked if not for Bella Donna's brother Julien. Outraged that a thief would dare marry his sister, he challenged Remy to a duel. Being the better swords man, Remy easily won and killed him. Though both guilds recognized it was not Remy's fault, they deemed it best that he leave New Orleans to preserve the peace. So Remy left his newly wed wife Bella Donna and his adopted family.
The years between his banishment from New Orleans and his joining of the X-Men are not well documented. At some point he worked at a Truck Stop Diner with Grey Crow and a woman. What exactly happened is not yet known but the woman described those years as being the strangest ever.
It was in the city of Seattle that Remy first heard the name Mr. Sinister. A disaster of huge proportions occured at a theatre in Seattle (probably the Essex theatre). Mr. Sinister rescued Remy from the reprecussions of his actions, and in turn Remy was indebted to Mr. Sinister. In return for a mysterious object, Gambit agreed to gather the Marauders from all over the world. Although he did not want to work for Mr. Sinister any longer, Sinister made him a deal he could not refuse. Gambit then lead the Marauders down into the Morlock Tunnels. No one had told Gambit the Marauder's purpose, and though he knew it was something illegal he had no idea it would be a masacre. He watched as the relatively helpless Morlocks fell before the laughing executioners. Unable to watch such horror he tried to reason with the Marauders, in response Sabretooth nearly gutted him. Ashamed at what he had done, he rescued a young girl with bones protruding from her head. This girl would later take the name Marrow.
What he did after the mutant masacre is unknown but several months later he met the X-Man named Storm. At the time she was in the body of a young teen-ager and being hunted by the Shadow King who sought to enslave her mind. Gambit rescued the young girl from the Hounds and the two thiefs stayed together for a time. Storm however could not abanndon her responsabilities to the X-Men and soon she rejoined the New Mutants and a handful of X-Men at the destroyed X-Mansion. Though Gambit had no real intrest in the X-Men he fought at Storm's side through Genosha and in Sh'iar space against the Skrulls. Throughout these battles he seemed overly interested in all the other X-Men but revealed very little about himself. At Storm's insistance, and several other X-Men's disapproval, he joined the X-Men.
When the X-Men fought the Shadow King on Muir Island, Gambit first met Rogue. From that first meeting Gambit became enfatuated with her. Once the Shadow King was beaten he spent his free-time with her, and made risky advances. Everything seemed to be going fine when his wife Bella Donna showed up at the X-mansion with powers of her own. The X-Men then learned of the two guilds in New Orleans and were forced to battle the Brood. Rogue was slightly appaled that Gambit had failed to mention his wife was alive but continued to love Gambit.
As the M'Krann crystal wave threatened to overwhelm the galaxy, Gambit kissed Rogue. Unknown to them both, the galaxy would not come to an end. Rogue's kiss sent Gambit into coma and his memories went into Rogue's head. Bewildered and frightened Rogue fled the X-Men with Iceman. She knew Gambit had done something awful in the past but she could not bring herself to find out what. She made her way cross country, along the way she stopped at the truck stop, to Seattle. Knowing her destination, Gambit flew there and confronted her at the theatre. Beg as she did, he refused to tell her what had happened here, for he feared that she would then realize his part in mutant masacre. She fled again, this time from Gambit and the X-Men.
When she finnaly returned she was accompanied by Joseph. Although Gambit hated the fact that Rogue was involved with Joseph and not him, he was kind to Joseph time and again. If Joseph could be accepted to the X-Men, then he hoped if his crimes ever became known he too would not be cast out.
When half the X-Men went to battle the Phalanx in Sh'iar space, Gambit, Rogue and Joseph were among them. It was there that Rogue confessed her true feelings for Gambit when she thought she was going to die. They all returned to earth, where while their powers were nullified by Nanny, Gambit and Rogue finnaly touched. Though Rogue proclaimed her love, Gambit still refused to, knowing that Rogue could not accept him without knowing his past.
Shortly after, Magneto, in the disguise of Eric the Red, put Gambit on trial for his role in the mutant masacre. How Magneto found out that Gambit was part of the masacre is unknown. Presumably someone must have told him. When the truth came out, Rouge was disgusted. She had seen the dead bodies first hand and fought the Marauders. Unwilling to let the choice be taken from him, she abanndoned him in the Antarctic instead fo letting him die in the Citadel. Now it was his choice whether to live or die, but he had no place with the X-Men or Rogue...
