First Appearence: Avengers Annual #10
Rogue's first kiss was also her first encounter with her mutant power. When her lips made contact with her friend Cody's she absorbed his psyche and sent him into a coma. Her powers were completely out of control, the slightest flesh to flesh contact triggered the absorbsion process. As a youngster she had no idea how to handle this unique problem. Although it may not have been for the best, she met a woman who took her in, this woman was Raven Darkholme aka Mystique.
Mystique explained to the petrified child that Rogue was a mutant. When Mystique revealed that she too was a mutant, Rogue's stubborn personality broke down and she welcomed Mystique's help. Mystique, and Destiny, became Rogue's parents from that time on. They genuinely cared for the young girl, but could no more hope to control her power than Rogue herself.
After a time, Mystique formed the second Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Rogue joined the group and on several occasions battled the Avengers and the X-Men. Her life of crime became public knowledge and at one time she was the most wanted criminal in the country.
While battling with the Brotherhood, she found herself in a life and death struggle with Carol Danvers aka Ms Marvel. The fight ended with Rogue absorbing Carol's psyche and powers but unlike the other times she had absorbed people, the powers and psyche did not revert to Carol. She had touched her for too long and the absorbsion had become permenant. Besides just absorbing Carol's psyche, she had also absrobed the powers of flight, super strength and partial invulnerbility. Rogue no longer knew which thoughts were her own and which were Carol's. Though Mystique and Destiny tried to help her, they could do little for her identity crisis. Rogue was becoming insane. Left with no alternative, Rogue ran away from her adopted parents.
The doorbell rang at the X-Mansion. Colossus struck her down where she stood but Rogue pleaded for the X-Men's help. Reluctantly he led her into their sanctuary to talk with Charles Xavier. The X-Men's feelings were apparent; Rogue was their enemy. Charles banished them from his study, and with Lilandra, listened to Rogue's plea for help. When they emerged, Xavier had welcomed Rogue to the X-Men.
The current X-Men voiced their hatred openly, they could not fight side by side with one of their greatest enemies. In the end Charles forced them to accept her into their midst but he could not force them to trust her. They threatened her and insulted her, thought she was an X-Man, she would never be one of them. Only when she sacrificed her life for that of Mariko's did she gain a modicium of trust. Wolverine's healing factor saved her life and even though she had died for them, she was not yet one of them. Only after many more battles was she trusted and finnaly became one of them.
When Xavier left the X-Men, and Storm lead the team alone, Wolverine took her under his wing much like he had done for Shadowcat. She learned from him more than before how to truly fight like and be a hero. After all the X-Men died during the first battle with the Adversary, she moved to the Australian Town with them. Here she continued to suffer from the burden Carol's psyche placed upon her. Here it was revealed that when Carol was in control of Rogue's body, she could touch people. Carol's explination for this was that Rogue's powers were psycological in nature, and that it was her guilt over what she had done to Cody that prevented her from controling her power. Her mutant power also acted as her shield from the outside world. When her powers had been negated during the X-Men's first battle in Genosha, two gaurds had abused her. This had mentally scarred her enough so that her power was now a defense from the outside world.
While fighting the unbeatable merged robot menace of Mastermold/Nimrod, Rogue plunged into the Seige Perilous with the robot to save the lives of the other X-Men. Many months later she was reborn in the Australian Outback town. To her great surprise, her powers of flight and strenght were gone and the town had been retaken by the Reavers. Before they could execute her, Carol Danvers arrived, defeated the Reavers and chased after Rogue. Fleeing to Gateway, Rogue was tackled into one of Gateway's portals by Carol Danvers. Rogue found herself in the Savage Land, Carol found herself on Muir Island, which at the time was controled by the Shadow King. Rogue thrived in the jungle, depending on her own skills and endurance. Though it took time, the Shadow King suceeded in finding Rogue and sending Danvers after her. The two women shared one life force and only one could survive. Rogue bested Danvers in combat but refused to kill her. This momentary weakness lost her the battle, and Davnvers would have taken Rogue's life if not for Magneto's interference. To save Rogue's life, Magneto killed Danvers. Her powers of flight and strenght still did not return and curiously her natural mutant power was gone too. With Magneto and Ka-Zar she fought the evil Zaladane, who had stolen Polaris' magnetic powers and enslaved most of the Savage Land. Being able to touch, a relationship began to form between Magneto and Rogue. In the final confrontation with Zaladane, all her powers returned and Magneto foresaked the dream. Alone, Rogue returned to the civilized world and Muir Island, where she became the thrall of the Shadow King, like Danvers before her.
When the Shadow King was defeated she was re-united with the X-Men and joined the blue team under Cyclops' leadership. It was also during this time that she first met Remy LeBeau aka Gambit. A romance developed but Rogue could still not touch another. Though Rogue showed every reluctance to touch Remy, Gambit tried time and again to touch her. This suave cajun was playing with fire. When was revealed that Remy was still married to Bella Donna, Rogue was dismayed and hurt. After the encounter with the Brood in New Orleans, the two lovers revisited Gambit's hometown on an adventure to save Bella Donna's life. Her desire to know Gambit's touch was so great that while Gambit was away, Rogue reached out and touched Bella Donna's skin. She now possesed Bella Donna's memories of Gambit. Later she she combatted Bella Donna, the leader of the Assasin's Guild.
When the world was about to end due to the M'Krann crystal engulfing the galaxy, Rogue willingly kissed Gambit. When reality was recreated, Gambit was in a coma. Rogue however was not much better off. She had absorbed some dark and terrible secret from Remy's past but it was so horrible she could not bring herself to face the truth. Fleeing the X-Men with Iceman, she travelled across the country on a road trip, till she reached Seattle. The event had taken place in Seattle. The trail lead her to an old, run-down theatre. It was there that Gambit confronted her but refused to confide his secret with her, so she left Gambit and the X-Men.
She lived a normal life, and worked as a waitress until Bastion found her. He captured her and was intending to make it look like she had killed a whole community of humans, so that he would have a martyr for his anti-mutant cause. Luckily for her however, Joseph, the de-aged Magneto, revealed his true colors against Bastion and freed Rogue. She knew she was on thin ice when it came to Joseph. He had lost all his memories and she feared he might revert to his old Magneto persona. She lead them across the country back to the X-Men so that he could get the help he needed. Along the way they were confronted by the Avengers and drawn into the Onslaught battle. Rogue confronted Gambit again and though he still refused to tell her his secret, she accepted him as a friend.
Using the Z'Noxx chamber, Joseph was able to construct a device capable of blocking Rogue's absorbsion powers. After all these years, Joseph was able to do what Xavier had never been able to do; help Rogue.
When half the X-Men were sent into Sh'iar space, Rogue became their leader for the time being. They saved the galaxy from the Phalanx and returned to earth. Their ship crash landed in the Antarctic and the X-Men were held hostage by Nanny. With their powers negated, Gambit and Rogue made love. The next day, the real Magneto, disguised as Erik the Red, put Gambit on trial. He made Rogue remember the secret she had absorbed. When Rogue learned that Gambit had lead the Marauders to the Mutant Masacre, she abanndoned him in the Antarctic to fend for himself. She has returned with the X-Men but refuses to confront her true feelings for Gambit and now she has an incredible urge to use her power...
