My first impressions were that this work should be called, "Basking in
the Sun." To me it is very reminiscent of the type of painting Vincent Van
Gogh did for his South Seas collection. His style is mimicked throughout the
piece with its indistinct and fading edges, use of pastel coloration
blending, anatomical errors and lack of depth perception. This is not to say
that it is not a good piece because it is. This is simply a style
distinction. The work over all is a very good representation of this style
and format and the bright contrasting use of color adds to this impression.
Van Gogh always made a statement with his work, ever trying to make a point.
This painting makes the same type of statement. To me it says warmth, deep
thought or dreaming, tranquility and peace with oneself. Perhaps a Van Gogh
style Mona Lisa smile expression in the face. (Guess what I am thinking
about) statement. The rich background coloration adds to its alure and
warmth. A happy feeling of care free rest and relaxation perhaps with a
dreamy quality. A very interesting piece.
