"Child of Magick, Child of Eve"

By
Clara Gerl

There are many legends about the fae and their origin. Some stories point out the fact that they are spirits of the undead while others state they are creatures of nature inhabiting trees and forests in an effort to protect them. In my research I came across an unusual explanation when I read that some scholars believe the fae to be the hidden children of Eve when she and Adam were exiled from Eden. I took this idea along with the idea of the blessed Seelie court and the evil Unseelie and created this story. I hope you enjoy it.

Clara 'Euphoria' Gerl The Fae Gatekeeper of Dreams

"We don't have any time!" Kafandra shouted at her mate as a loud sound was heard outside. "No time we must hide her!"

"But how?" Piloke dreadfully replied as he tried to concentrate and make the hinges remain firm against the door. "I have no knowledge of trickery, isn't that what you know?"

"Keep concentrating!" she said frantically. "I am saving my last cantrip to see if I can open a portal."

Piloke stared at the walls and using his magic commanded the wood of the door to seal it tight as intruders tried to bang their way in. "This will buy us some time but what do you mean 'open a portal?' Humans can't see us and no matter where we go the Unseelie will track us down. This must end now!"

"It has to my love." she sighed and looked upon the babe in her arms, "She's been here years and has hardly grown, but when she goes to earth….."

"Earth?"

"Yes, she is the only half human and half fae, and our only hope."

Piloke moved closer to his mate, "Do you still think that foolish prophecy is true? Do you think she can be the one to save us? Look it has been thirty earth years and if she was human she would look much older."

A single tear fell down Kafandra's face, "You remember how I appeared to a human who was blessed with the second sight and you remember this child is not yours. If I didn't believe the prophecy I would of never used all my magic to mate with that mortal!"

Piloke knew it was true that Liana was their only hope. Each day the Unseelie grew more powerful and one human month was all that was left before faeryland fell to the evil forces. Sadly he looked at his adopted daughter and with a tear in his eye said, "She's so beautiful, just like you. I…I don't want to loose her."

Kafandra gazed up at her mate and choked back a sob, "I don't either." Piloke was beside himself to see the beauty and compassion that radiated in his wife's face tainted with immense sorrow. They hated what they had to do, but had no other choice.

The babe was placed the center of the cold wood floor. She giggled and laughed happily unaware of what was happening. Kafandra sighed as she saw this but was sure to place the memory stone in a small pouch next to her child. Under the moonlight all truth would be revealed if fortune was with her.

A few herbs surrounded Liana to assure her a safe journey and her mother carefully placed a purple scarf around her naked body. The scarf was enchanted and would give any mortal touching it the gift of the second sight--the ability to see the fae for what they really are.

The walls shook as the Unseelie rammed harder against the door. Piloke unsheathed his sword, "Do it now!" he screamed, "They're coming!"

Ancient words rolled from Kafandra's lips as the scarf began to glow revealing the source of magic from the cantrip. She was one of the few who could open a portal to earth and prayed that her child would grow and be safe there.

Violet eyes fluttered open as a new place was revealed to her sight. "Where…where am I?" the woman asked with a voice sweeter than honey. Her bright skin illuminated against the gray, cold walls of the room. She sat upon a large couch staring at her surroundings. As she tried to figure out how she got here, the past seemed to be a blank slate.

"Are you O.K. Miss?" a woman approached dressed in a dark blue suit with strange metal buttons on her and metal objects on her waist. She shook in confusion at seeing this person, completely unfamiliar with who or what she was.

"Uhm yes." she tried to answer. Words just seemed to flow from her mouth as she couldn't remember what made sense in conversation, or how she learned how to speak, but that seemed to be the right thing to say. If nothing else it calmed the woman before her.

"Well now that we've got that established what's your name and how did you end up naked in Battery Park?"

"Battery Park?"

"Yeah you know, close to The Statue of Liberty."

"Liberty? I never heard of it."

The woman sighed and handed her a long trench coat. It would provide more warmth than the long cotton shirt they found to temporarily cover her. "Well put this on for now, detective Larson will be in soon to talk to you. From there you'll probably need to go see a doctor."

She nodded and sighed wrapping the jacket around her body. Indeed it did provide some extra warmth as the cold air caused a few goosebumps to rise on her skin. Nothing made sense as she tried to remember her name or where she had come from, everything was still blank.

In a matter of minutes the door flew open and a handsome man entered. In his right hand he held a yellowish folder that he quickly threw on a desk near him. Taking off his dark coat Liana strained to see his features. For a moment she caught herself staring at him. He stood tall and moved with grace as he did even the simple movements of walking around. With a sway of his body he turned to stand near a chair and then took notice of the woman that appeared to be waiting for him.

He was a bit surprised when he saw her as she sat up straight to nod in greeting. He nodded back not able to say a word. Her features were delicate and refined, almost as if her face were chisled out of stone to become a statue of beauty. Venus briefly came to mind as she smiled with thick red lips that said, "Hello." He blinked for a moment as she took a lock of her red hair back behind her ears to reveal intense violet eyes. Eyes that he never saw before, that had him entranced.

"Ahum." he quickly said as he backed away in an effort to restrain himself from staring any more. "My name is Detective Larson, I was assigned to this case to find out exactly what happened."

"I don't know." Liana replied, "I wish I did know what happened I don't even remember being near liberty."

"The statue?"

"That's what she said. She also said I needed to go see a doctor? What is that?"

Larson was a bit surprised by her lack of knowledge, "You don't know what a doctor is?"

"No."

"I take it that you don't have insurance then?"

"Sir I'm not sure of anything, how can I have any surance if I'm not sure."

Larson managed to hide a chuckle as it was obvious she had no idea what was going on. "You're really sick. I mean apparantly really really sick. There is a medical center that might take a look at you but they're closed now. We'd need to make an appointment for you to figure out what is wrong. But where do you live?"

"I don't know!"

"Do you have any I.D?"

"No I don't whatever that is."

He looked at her again in amazement. True he heard of amnesia but never to this extreme. Still she was too beautiful and fragile to be staying on the streets of New York alone. He looked up at the clock on the wall that almost moved its hands to 5 p.m. "It's time for me to get off work. I'll take you to the doctor tomorrow. In the meantime you can stay with me."

The doctor's office was nothing familiar to Liana. She even seemed a bit distressed as many people walked in and out of the small room with frowned faces, indicating something was wrong with them. Liana had never known any illness since she had been on earth three days and before then all memories were still a blank.

Larson escorted her to see the doctor. The nurse had a strange look on her face when she announced for "Jane Doe" to enter the exam room. It was obvious that a new name had not been chosen for her yet and the detective wanted to be sure her memory could be salvaged before calling her anything too unfamiliar.

A long series of tests were done which made Liana both confused and worried. What were these needles they used to prick her skin and draw out fluid? What was this band they placed around her arm to squeeze tight? Larson looked at her in disbelief as she seemed unreasonably frightened and he was even more startled to hear she never went to a doctor. Nonetheless he found himself by her side throughout the whole exam. Even though they only spent a few days together he began to care for her deeply.

After the trip to the doctor the two went back to Larson's apartment. It was rather small but nice enough. Fortunately he had a guest room with a large bed that Liana found more than comfortable. But this time she entered the room with a frown upon her face and sat down on a nearby chair. The detective sensed her anxiety and quickly kneeled beside her, holding her hand as he asked, "What's wrong?"

"All this time spent at the 'doctor' and no one still knows who I am. I don't even know who I am Larson."

"I know." he said rubbing her hand in and attempt to soothe her, "It'll be ok, eventually everything will come back to you, but I have something to show you."

"What?"

Larson reached into his pocket and pulled out a small pouch that looked stuffed. "Inside it is a rock and a purple scarf." he said, "They were the only things found when you appeared in Battery Park."

"The only things?" she asked as she pulled the scarf out and wrapped it around her wrist.

"Yes."

She pulled out the stone and stared at it for a bit. The light in the room seemed to reflect off its shiny gray surface and she could see her face in it. "This is beautiful. Very beautiful."

"Like you." Larson's thoughts slipped before he could control what he said. Liana looked at him with a bit of astonishment, "What did you say?"

"It's very beautiful uhm.." Larson took the stone into his hand, "I used to do some metal work, I can make a chain to wrap around it so you can wear it. It is very nice."

"That's so thoughtful of you."

"It's nothing at all." he said and quickly walked out the door hoping his attraction to her would not be too evident in the next few days.

The next few days passed and the detective made a beautiful silver necklace that held the stone around her neck. She smiled as she looked at her present. It was so kind of him to do this for her, to give her the necklace, to give her a place to stay, but one thing concerned Liana, Larson was acting different, almost as if he was distressed about something.

He went to work early the next morning, almost as if he was trying to avoid her. Her gaze met his briefly in the hall before he was about to walk out. In a rush he quickly said, "Goodbye." and slammed the door. He never acted this 'brief' with her before. He always had something to say, something to talk about be it a new case on which he was working, or his friends and family. She knew he was upset about something so she would wait patiently until he got home, they had to talk.

He was late when the door clicked open. It was 7 pm and she looked at him with confusion wondering why he didn't come home at 6 like he normally did. With a heavy sigh she approached him, "Larson we have to talk."

He sighed in return as he put his briefcase down, "You're right we need to. We need to choose a name for you, 'Jane Doe' just doesn't do you justice anymore."

She shook her head already knowing that was not what was on his mind, "No Larson, that's not what's bothering you."

"How do you know what's bothering me?"

"Your actions, your movements. You seem confused, hurt, your expression is nothing but pure anxiety."

He shook a bit as she was able to diagnose his condition so easily. He slowly walked over to her trying not to tremble as he spoke, "Sorry, work has just been too stressful lately."

"It's not work Larson, you haven't complained about work lately and with how much you talk about your cases, if there was something wrong you would of told me. You know that and I know something else is bothering you." she took a step closer and gently put her hand on his shoulder, "Please, you can trust me."

At that moment Larson felt a sharp, warm sensation trickle down his arm. It was inviting, sensual and came from just a single touch. He looked at her with her intense violet eyes and a sensation sprang from his heart he never knew. Without a word he took her tightly into his arms and kissed her passionately on the lips.

Liana did not know how to react for this sensation was not only new, but intense. For a brief moment she just stood there, her lips against his, then this sensation began to please her. For some strange reason she felt secure as his lips parted to taste her mouth and she welcomed him.

Larson finally realized what he was doing and immediately pulled back. "Oh…I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry. I don't know what to say I shouldn't of done that."

Liana did not approach him as he took a step away, "What..what was that?" she spoke with a hint of confusion and longing in her voice.

"Don't tell me no one has ever kissed you before."

"I don't remember. Please don't be mad at me but I don't remember. That was…nice. I never felt it before."

Knowing it was all right the detective took a step closer, "So I didn't disturb you?"

"Not at all. I liked it."

Larson's face began to light up as he reached out to take her hand. As their skin touched a warmth pulsed through their body, making them feel more secure. "You did. That's…that's wonderful."

"Yes. It was, and I see you are feeling much better."

"I am. You're so beautiful, I've been having feelings for you lately."

"As have I."

"You do?"

"Yes."

He looked into her eyes again. There was such a sparkle to them now. He felt as if he could just gaze into them for eternity. Then her sweet voice broke the silence, "I'd like to talk. I'd like you to give me a name. I'd like to walk under the moonlight with you. It's so beautiful."

"Let's go my beauty." he said as he held her hands tighter, "I know a perfect place."

They walked behind his apartment building down a small, secluded path, "This is a way to a small park. There's a clearing there where I used to go when some cases got hard. It allowed me some time to think."

"Already it's so beautiful." she said as she stepped down the dirt path. A few birds of the night chirped and hooted in greeting and she smiled in return well aware of the life in the park even though it was night. Before she could look to see the other woodland residents here, Larson led her to a small bench in an empty clearing.

"We need to find a name for you my dear."

"That we do." she smiled as she took a lock of her hair and moved it behind her shoulder. The moonlight shined bright around them illuminating the entire area. Its rays brillant, it struck the pendant around her neck making it shimmer before their eyes. Larson smiled as he saw the mysterious rock glitter around her neck, but Liana paused and brought her hands around her head. She seemed unable to move.

"What's wrong?" he said with concern, "Are you ok?"

She shook her head as a look of confusion crossed her face, "I see images….am starting to remember things."

"Remember?" Larson's tone with enthusiastic to say the least as he came closer to her, "Tell me all that you remember. How can I help you?"

"The pouch." she said, "Touch the scarf inside the pouch."

Larson was relieved that he didn't forget to bring the pouch in case her necklace might break. He did as she told and pulled the scarf from it, holding it tight in his hand.

"Now see me."

Larson looked up to Liana and opened his eyes wide to the scene in front of him. There she stood with the same intense violet eyes and hair that sparkled with a myriad of colors as light from the moon bounced up and down all over her body. Her aura was flickering with the force of magick, a force he did not know much of, but something mystical was taking place. Her form, once clad in blue jeans and a simple gray T-shirt, was now adorned with flowing white fabric that accentuated her nimble movements as she rose a few feet above the ground. Guiding her upward, huge wings of luminescent shades of blue, pink and purple shimmered before him.

"Who are you?" he asked in complete awe of the fae before him.

"I know everything now, even to the moment I was conceived. Oh Larson, what I am is rare. I am the only one of my kind."

"What are you?"

A few tears ran down her pure white skin as she recalled the moment life sparked in her mother's womb, "My mother was sent in the hopes of fulfilling a prophecy that would save the Seelie and send them to heaven. She found my father, lied to him so she could obtain his seed that conceived me. Oh Larson he loved her, but she didn't love him! What am I?"

He took a step closer but not as close as he was to her before. The light she illuminated was intense and he had to wince a bit to shield his eyes from it as she continued the story. "I am like you, but different." her words or sorrow, when she recalled her conception, changed to a more charismatic tone. "You know you are from God and you know you are from Adam and Eve. But my kind were Eve's hidden children. I know now! I know everything when they were cast out, Eve hid my ancestors from God's sight. But God knew this and for many years allowed them to play in the garden of Eden until the good ones and bad ones of my kind were established. Then they were sent to another realm, to faeryland. A realm where they could die by sword, where they felt pain, and most of all where evil could overpower good.

"Then a prophet came saying God revealed a prophecy unto him. That there would be born a child of a human and of a fae, and that she would be the one to judge that the Seelie would go to heaven, and that the Unseelie would go to hell where they belonged."

Larson continued to listen carefully to her story. It would be hard for him to believe this, but the scarf allowed him to see the true glamour and power of her kind, so he had no doubts about what she was saying. Another tear fell from her eye, "I must judge now. Tonight is the last night of the 2499th year and it must be done! Let the trial begin!"

The entire area was flushed with a brillant light that momentarily blinded Larson. He held his scarf tightly and when his vision returned Liana floated high above him and two huge crowds. The crowd on his right were beautiful figures. All tall, fair skinned like Liana and nodding in respect to her. The ones to his left were a strange assortment of creatures. Some were beautiful, some were short, hairy and hideous, but they all had black hair and a snarling voice as they muttered amongst themselves.

"Enough!" Liana shouted. "I am Liana, half human, half fae. The prophecy is true and I seek the head leaders of the Seelie and Unseelie to come before me."

Gasps and sighs shook the crowd of the dark ones. It took no time for the Seelie to produce a tall, beautiful man with long golden hair and pointed ears to float up to her. The Unseelie finally allowed a woman with short black hair and harry arms to represent them. She floated up to Liana, her right hand hidden behind her back.

"It would serve you well to put the weapon away." Liana chided, "I could judge you now for that. But God has gifted me with the powers of recognition, I will be able to tell who was right and who was wrong."

A bright aura of magick appeared around Liana and swirled with a variety of colors. Black, white, red, blue, yellow, green all found a way to twist and turn around themselves, until a force of shimmering golden light reached out for the Seelie leader, and the Unseelie representative.

In seconds Liana felt all the suffering of the Seelie and all the evil of the Unseelie. The pain they caused in the past was intense when babes of a few years were sliced open for festivals under evil lords, and at the same time the kind lords sought nothing but to raise their children with love. The Unseelie terrorized homes of their enemies, seeking power and blood, and the Seelie were their victims.

The light wrapped around the two leaders and Liana addressed them both, "As it was foretold the blessed ones shall enter heaven to be blessed at the side of God. As it is judged the evil ones will remain in hell victim to Satan's ways and his torturous flames."

Screams filled the Unseelie crowd but they were brief as all the fae before her vanished, leaving no trace of their existence. The judgement was complete and the punishment swift. But Liana remained and floated down to greet Larson who still stood on the ground in total disbelief of what happened.

"So you are?" he asked still not understanding exactly who she was.

"The blessed savior of my kind, as it would be foretold."

"And you know everything about yourself."

"Unfortunately yes. I never grew much in my mother's land so she transported me to earth hoping I would grow quickly enough to pass judgement and save her kind."

"She was one of the good ones right?"

"Yes, that she was."

"So what about you? Now that this is over with, do you have to go back?"

A soft sigh escaped Liana's lips, "I'm afraid so. I do have mortal blood in me but I don't think it's strong enough to keep me here. The Seelie all belong with God now and unless I am fused with a human life, I must go to heaven with my family."

"Fused with a human life?"

"Another human life force needs to bond with me so my mortal blood can be strong enough to keep me here. There has to be some other purpose for me to stay here too. I'd honestly want to stay here, but unless I can be part of creation I must go to heaven."

Larson took a step closer to her and reached for her hand again, "You can be a part of creation, you can be a part of me."

"But I'd have to be with child."

He smirked and looked deeply into her eyes, "And do you think that will be that much of a problem?"

"No." she smirked, "Not if that's what you want. Not if that's the responsibility you seek."

"I wouldn't have it any other way."

So Liana and Larson returned to their small home. Her heart full of love and his mind full of hope for the future. Never had he felt such feelings for anyone and never had she been so secure in his arms. They made love that night and their union was complete. Her pale body shined naked in the moonlight as she reached down to rub her stomach, full of hope for the life that would spring from her belly….but that is another story.
