Giran was a good hunter much to Karan's surprise. It was easy for Aloysius to find food in the green grass where they laid camp, but the humans required a better source of energy. After a couple of hours the young man came back with two rabbits and by nightfall the small caravan was satisfied with full stomachs.
"No harm will befall us tonight?" Karan looked at her winged companion uneasy by her unfamiliar surroundings.
"We're not far in the woods yet. The most dangerous creatures will probably live in the deep forests. From here you can hear the water along the beach, and unless there are kelpies and other sea monsters that wish to be curious for a change no one will find us."
"I agree." came Giran's reply. "It's been a hard day and time to sleep."
"Goodnight then." the young woman said as she laid her head upon a small pile of leaves. The breeze was warm and comforting so fortunately there was no need for blankets and other bedding. Such things could be woven out of gold if need be but sleep came in a matter of minutes.
Dreams flowed into everyone's mind as their eyes danced under their eyelids. Mostly peaceful they told of fairy kisses when the fae were kind and fruitful lands that ceased want and desire for food. But Karan tossed and turned in her sleep. Something else began to manifest in her head.
She saw herself in front of a large fire. Its flames flickered before her eyes in hues of orange and red. Burning brightly she walked closer and coming within a few feet of the hearth she saw a large white looking worm among the glowing logs that fueled the heat.
She tried to focus on the image and as she did the flames suddenly died out. Not realizing she was dreaming she questioned why it died so quickly when she saw the same white worm begin to squirm out of the ashes.
It was large and as it moved away from the hearth it began to split. As Karan's eyes opened wide she saw the skin of the worm begin to split. Brown hair was apparent underneath when it started to crawl towards her. She shivered when she heard a loud growling sound.
Suddenly the skin was ripped by a hairy creature inside that snarled as it broke loose from its cage of flesh. It was horrid and stood before her as something she wished she hadn't seen. Its body had the torso of a man and its legs and wings looked like that of a small dragon. Its arms hairy she looked down to see claws at least ten inches long. If that was frightening enough its face was that of a boar with tusks protruding from its large nose.
It walked towards her and groaned as it saw her shiver. Suddenly its mouth moved and she heard the name, "Hebacon."
Karan screamed in fear and found herself awake in the forest. It was still dark and she looked around for her companions. As she did so a series of rustling sounds were heard in the distance. She quickly ran to Giran as the noise grew louder, "Wake up." she told him as she shook his side, "I heard something someone maybe coming."
