Ley Lines

Ley Lines

Browsing through my appointment book which was stuffed with meetings, conferences etc. for the next days, I occasionally directed my gaze through the big office window into the sky on which the sun slowly approached the horizon. The blue-grey clouds were the precursors of a thunderstorm and I saw the flashing of the first lightnings which cast bizzare patterns on the forest.

I tried to ignore the haunting atmosphere which emanated from the landscape. Soon the first bulldozzers and other vehicles of the building site would arrive in order to cut down and level the forest. Later the laying of the foundation stone of the plant which was to be built here would take place. I was the chairwoman of the chemical plant and, thus, it was my task to coordinate and control the works here. I sent a cursory glance on the papers with calculations and reviewed in my mind the report I was to hold this evening at the meeting of all persons concerned with the project.

Trying again to concentrate on my notes I couldn't avoid looking again to the lightnings which were reflected distinctly on the forest. In fragments of a second the stone formations loomed in the flashing of the lightnings which were situated in the centre of the forest. I had heard about them, but never seen them before... and also the rumours of some older people from the villages nearby had reached me.

"Nonesense, superstition..." I thought at that time. I had a very realistic state of mind, everything I couldn't grab with my own five senses didn't exist for me. Thus, thanks to my pragmatic character and to sufficient fonds I had succeeded in convincing the Authorities to grant us the permission for our building project and to dispel their misgivings.

Having checked the notes again a looked at my wrist wratch: there was still enough time for a small walk before the meeting. The thunderstorm had ceased in the meantime. I wanted to look at the environment before I had to hold the report.

I didn't want to accept the fascination the circle of stones excerted upon me. I justified this walk towards myself with the pretext that I would thus unmask all secrets and legends which were connected with this circle of stones as soon as I would see it with my own eyes.

It was still bright enought to recognise the path winding between the trees. It was not possible to easily scare me and, thus, I self-confidentally paced the forest path which was still a little bit swampy due to the past thunderstorm.

In the distance a tawny owl cried... a dark cloud passed in front of the setting sun... How did it come that I felt strangely out of place in my clothes ? I had just changed my high-heeled shoes against more rigid ones, but my fur coat and the gown I wore under it seemed to be just as unappropriate concerning the atmoshere around here as my red fingernails and the golden bracelets I wore.

A short time before I stepped on the clearing I flinched: something had moved in the thicket: I saw a huge king stag with gorgeous antlers who stepped majestically onto the clearing and on whose fur the beams of the setting sun cast a orange-golden magical pattern. Was it due to the wet air or the twilight that slowly a thick fog extended so that I couldn't see the circle of stones as distinctly as before ?

I saw a shape approaching from the distance. She wore simple clothes and at first glance I took her for one of the inhabitants of the villages nearby... but something seemed to be different ...

Was it perhaps due to the fact that she wore clothes I had never seen here before ?

Her clothes seemed nearly to be of a medieval style. She bore something in a basket and slowly approached the circle of stones. She obviously didn't see me, but something at her seemed strangely familiar to me... I stood at the border of the clearing as if I were paralyzed and observed what happened next...

An energy pulsated around the circle of stones that I could nearly sense physically . I still hadn't seen her face, and she had also not been able to see me. When she turned a cold shiver crawled up my spine: It was as if I had seen into a mirror: it was my own face, only her body was clothed in a gown which was perhaps suitable for the fashion some centuries ago here in the area. It seemed to me as if I would experience myself everything that followed:

I had laid down my gifs for the master of the forest in the centre of the circle of stones, some fruits of our fields. I wanted to pray for continous fertility for our fields and for fertility for my body... a child was my great wish in that life...

"It is strange," I thought with my remaining conscience of the 20th century, "I would have never permitted myself this thought today, everything else would have been more important to me, my work didn't leave my any free time for that.. at least I thought so.... " But then my thoughts blurred and I saw the mighty king stag, which I had seen only from the distance, now slowly approaching the circle of stones. It was a view I would never forget in my life:

A power and might emerged from it which was nearly beyond everything I could have imagined before. I noticed how my spine began to prickle...

When I looked into the eyes of the king stag it was as if I could see into the soul of the forest or the whole country: the green soft hills, the gushing of the small waterfalls, the brooks winding through the valleys... I noticed how I hoovered over the landscape...there was no king stag anymore, but somebody from which emanated an unspeakable tenderness and understanding and, at the same time, savageness and a sexual attraction sat next to me on the stone plate in the middle of the forest - was it a man, was it the spirit of this forest ? I darkly remembered the tales about Cerunnos, the master of the forest who lived in the shape of a stag in the woods. I heard him whispering to me:

"You have made the gift of your fruits to me, so will I give you some of my fruits as well... I hope you can feel the streams of energies, the Ley Lines, in the Earth as well as in your body, then I will bestow upon thee a great treasure."

Tenderly he stroke my long hair from my neck and touched with his lips gently my neck, so that a thrill ran through my body. Slowly his fingertips touched my spine and I saw and felt the cool, clear streams of water running through the forest and flowing into the ocean... was it water or the energy of the Earth ? It was as if I swam with the dolphins, could touch their bodies, their soft skin...

His tongue glided over my shoulder, his lips touched my neck, hot waves like a flood of lava pulsated through my body...

My body was like the earth through which all energies flooded, I could sense every leaf, every drop of water on me, every animal which fought for its survival or which searched for a mate in the heat of the day or the cool twilight...

He tenderly blew his breath over the wet track which his tongue had left on my body, I could feel the wind breathing over the forest, I was like the wind and I was united with the birds which were borne by the wind, I could feel how he or the birds caressed me with their feathers...

An electric prickling energy flooded throughout my body... spinning stars, pulsating energy in the air before a thunderstorm... whirls of energy in the Earth at the roots of all life, of the cereals... I felt how the Ley Lines laid freely on the Earth, how the energy could stream through them and how they were bundled in the magical point here directly in my body.

Suddenly I was dazzled by the sun... was it day again ? I couldn't see his face, it seemed to me as if gorgeous antlers of a stag were flashing through the sunlight...

The days and months in this other time passed by... I saw how my body became fuller, how my belly vaulted under my plain gown while I executed the works on the fields...

... I felt the labouring pain and, again, I was dazzled by the sun... a small stag rushing through the thicket...

... but no... the moon was round and full at the sky, the first stars had appeared. I blinked my eyes and looked bewildered around me. Did I fell asleep here on the stone plate in the circle of stones ? Nobody was here, nothing, except for myself... Amazed I touched my body, my belly. A power not known before emanated from it, the point directly under my navel pulsated of energy and, for the first time, I really was aware of it and listened to its secrets. I hadn't noticed that I had left my shoes at the stone circle, also my fur coat was still there. I went back barefoot through the forest.. I saw in the distance a king stag and a small stag dancing in the moonlight over the meadow...

The chemical plant was never built at this place... even if this would only be a dream...
