" An Affirming Flame " - Episode #102 (slight spoilers below) (Click here for synopsis)

Written By: Robert Hewitt Wolfe     Directed By: Brenton Spencer

This episode was really the second part of a two hour 'pilot' for this series, so this review will be fairly brief. The episode played out with few surprises as far as the plot since the series premise pretty much ensured that Andromeda, Dylan and the Maru's crew would survive and would be united as one crew by the end.

All of the characters gained a bit more depth, including Dylan Hunt who is beginning to come across as a man deeply troubled if he fails to uphold his ideals and protect others. The character that perhaps needed and gained the most definition was that of Tyr Anasazi. Tyr is obviously more than a 'tough guy', but seems to have a real respect for even his enemies and despises those who betray others. Gerentex (John Trench) unfortunately was just brutal and annoying, so I hope we see little of him in the future.

One concern I had was the apparent ease at which the mercenaries subdued most of Andromeda's defenses. My impression was that the ship boasted sophisticated automated defense mechanisms that should take a lot more than a handful of armed mercenaries to overwhelm.

Overall the show was fun to watch and I think the series continue to have a lot of potential. Now comes the crucial time when we see if it lives up to that potential!

There is still not enough information yet to evaluate consistency, which I will start to do on the next episode.
