The Widening Gyre - Episode #201
(spoilers below!) (Click here for review)Written By: Robert Hewitt Wolfe Directed By: Allan Eastman
Since this is the conclusion of a two part episode, please read the previous one for continuity.
Andromeda awakes Beka who soon performs CPR on Dylan to revive him. Nearby Trance shows no life signs, but Beka comments "as if that means anything" and arouses her by squeezing her tail. Beka then passes out and Rommie (impaled, but now on backup power) via a viewscreen tells Trance to get them to Medical while she draws the Magog away. Trance is frantic, not seeing a "perfect possible future", but Andromeda insists and calls droids to help move Beka and Dylan. Trance (with Rommie's help) fends off Magog ("accidentally" electrocuting one) while Rommie, responding to a suggestion, sends out the Tweedles (Planetary Warfare Bots) to clear the Hull of Magog Swarm ships.
In the Medical Bay, Dylan (and Beka) recover and tells them that he and Rommie will go in the Maru to the worldship to find Harper and Tyr via nanobot transmitters Andromeda had previously injected into all of them. Beka and Trance remain aboard to arm a Nova Bomb to launch if they do not return in three hours.
In the worldship Harper realizes his nightmare has come true, he's infested with Magog larvae. Elsewhere a Magog leader realizes Rev isn't one of them, Rev kills him and dons his uniform but finds a band of Magog feeding on another Magog. As a "great one" he is due a share, but refusing it is attacked by them since he smells wrong, but Rev manages to kill them. Harper calls Tyr names, and he admits to being awake and then tries to convince Harper to be calm (since he beat the odds to be born). Later Tyr says he will fight death and exhorts Harper to do likewise.
The Andromeda (with internal defenses working again) evades more Point Singularity Projectiles (PSP's). Beka asks Rommie to show her what happened on her first encounter with the worldship. Rommie shows the mission to find the Magog base that led to a galaxy millions of light years away, with only black holes, dust and the worldship remaining. Andromeda's crew were killed by Magog, but she slipstreamed and wondered lost for 13 months until found by a Than freighter. She insists Beka promise that this time she will return with her crew or not at all.
Meanwhile, Dylan and Rommie have killed many Magog and made their way close to Harper and Tyr, who they call on their transmitters. With only 10 minutes remaining a hesitant Beka arms the Nova bomb.
Bloodmist finds Rev and takes him to meet "their god", an Energy Being (seen in Harper 2.0) who he calls the Spirit of the Abyss. Rev senses great hatred but kneels, saying he sees love/peace beneath. He asks to be taken to Harper and Tyr to show them harmony (by killing them likely). Meanwhile Harper and Tyr have partially freed themselves and kill two Magog who find them. Dylan and Rommie her their cries, but are ambushed by Magog with guns. Harper frees himself completely, but is stopped as Bloodmist and Rev enter. Rev turns on Bloodmist and kills him.
PSP's begin to fire on the Andromeda again and Beka has Rommie vent the cargo bays to slip the Nova Bomb out. The bomb detonates in the mini-sun of the worldship and Magog within begin to catch fire and die. However, the Energy Being seems to draw the energy into himself, extinguishing the sun but preventing the bomb from destroying the worldship. Dylan and Rommie jump in the hope of reaching safety, and Dylan breaks his leg.
Rev, Tyr and Harper begin to make their escape and are ambushed by Magog who are in turn killed by Dylan and Rommie. They make it to the Maru, briefly are confronted by the Energy Being, but escape to the Andromeda.
Harper awakens in Medical to learn that removing the Magog larvae almost killed Tyr. Rev tells him that he will have to take medication regularly to keep them dormant, but that it won't work forever. Trance is confident she'll find a way to 'cure' Harper, who wants death, but later thanks Tyr for his "where there is hope there is life" speeches.
Later on the bridge Dylan tells Beka he is proud of her actions and wishes he could promote her. Rommie shows the crippled worldship's sun beginning to re-ignite and that within 2-3 years it could be fully operational. Dylan says the renewed Commonwealth is no longer a dream, it's a necessity!
