Hoist was one of five Autobots who allowed Optimus Prime to encode his mind into a crystal before leaving Cybertron to intercept an asteroid belt that threatened the planet. These Autobots were selected for preservation in case Optimus Prime needed re enforcements on his mission. When the Ark crashed into Earth four million years ago, the crystals remained intact.

Hoist and the other four Autobots, Tracks, Grapple, Skids and Smokescreen, were awakened after the Autobots suffered heavy casualties in battle with the Decepticons while recovering the lost head of Optimus Prime. Wheeljack constructed new bodies for the five warriors and on the command of Optimus Prime transferred their minds into their new forms to help replenish the Autobot ranks.

Bumblebee escorted the new Autobots, with the exception of Grapple, on a tour of their new world to familiarize them with Earth. During the outing the group ran afoul of a Decepticon plot masterminded by Shockwave to convert sonic energy into Energon cubes at a rock concert. During the show Hoist saved Brick Springsteen and his band from being crushed when the Decepticons caused a support structure to collapse. Hoist advised Brick and his band to keep playing to calm the crowd while he welded the support back in place. The Autobots foiled the plot and drove off the Decepticons.

Hoist often took a hand in the maintainence of the Autobots. He was shown at times to fuss at the Autobots about their maintainence practices during his time running the Ark's maintainence bay.

Hoist took part in an attack on the Decepticon headquarters then located at a Wyoming stripmine, the purpose of which was to steal the secret of Decepticon Gestalt technology. While Hoist and other Autobots engaged Devastator in battle, Bumblebee scanned him with a device that revealed the secrets of his makeup. This allowed the Autobots to duplicate the process with the Aerialbots, who merged to form Superion.

Hoist was among Grimlock's crew of Autobots that eventually left the Earth when the Ark was repaired. He was present at the proposed execution of a group of human children by Grimlock, which was really just a ploy to flush Blaster, whom Grimlock had deemed a traitor, out of hiding.

When Starscream gained the power of the Underbase, Hoist was part of a force of Transformers that confronted him in New York City. He was blasted into deactivation by Starscream.

Hoist was not seen afterwards. Presumably he was among the Autobots placed in life support pods in the Ark. Whereas some of these Autobots were eventually revived by Grimlock using Nucleon, Hoist was not seen among them. He may have been aboard the Ark when it crashed to Earth the second time and if so, he was obliterated when it was later destroyed during a conflict between Megatron and Fortress Maximus.
