Prologue

Quark looked back quickly just to make sure no one was following him. Nope, no one there. But still Odo could be anything. "But if I've done the math right" Quark thought, "Odo's in his bucket!" He raced to the airlock to greet his "guests". The airlock door opened and four Rethian traders stepped out. The one closest to Quark looked at him with its three eyes and told him his cargo was in the back. One of the other Rethians took Quark to his merchandise. The ship was huge. Quark went to the back and was shocked to see a Klingon of all things in there with his cargo! The Klingon looked at Quark with his one good eye and gave him the cargo. He left the ship and scurried to his shop. He put it in the back. Then Quark went to bed.

Chapter 1

Benjamin Sisko was sitting in his office when the doors opened and Jadzia Dax burst in.
"Benjamin we have a serious problem."
"Well, what is it Old Man?"
"That's just it. I don't know."
"What do you mean You don't know?"
"I guess you'll have to see." Dax led Sisko down the stairs to her console. "See. The stations sensors can't identify whatever that is."
Sisko looked at the screen to see where the thing was. Sisko reached out and tapped his commbadge. "Sisko to Odo"
The monotone voice replied "Odo here, yes what is it?"
"Constable, we have something on the station, we don't exactly know what it is yet."
"Yes, and?"
"And I want you to go and find it. Its last known location was Section-17. Sisko out." Find it fast he thought.

Odo got up to leave just a Quark came in the door.
"Odo, I..."
"Not now Quark."
"But it's important."
"I said not now Quark."
"Odo, just listen to me!"
"I said not now! Now if you'll excuse me, I have things to do." Odo walked out the door leaving Quark in his office.
"Great, now who can help me?" Quark said aloud. He turned around and scurried back to his bar.

Odo was standing outside the door waiting for the Ferengi to leave before he went to Section-17. He motioned to three of the deputies to come with him. They got on the turbolift and told it Section-17. At first the ride was going smoothly, but with just one floor to go the tubolift started to go faster and faster. They kept going down. Odo had to do something but before he could do anything the turbolift stopped. The sudden stop threw everyone to the floor. "Whew. Gee it was lucky that this thing stopped before it hit bottom." Garrett said.
"I do not believe in luck." Odo said turning to his young deputy.
Garrett said under his breath, "Yea then what do you call it?"
Odo pretended like he didn't hear that. He tapped his commbadge. "Odo to Sisko."
"Sisko here. Constable, are you all right? We stopped the turbolift as fast as we could."
He looked at Garrett "We're fine Captain, but we are stuck in here..."
"We're already on it. Worf and Chief O'Brien should be there any minute."
"Thank you Captain. Odo out."
Odo looked at Garrett again "See, there's no such thing as luck."
Garrett rolled his eyes. Sure you don't he thought.

Worf and Chief O'Brien were running down the Promenade as fast as they could without running down everyone in their way. Worf looked at the Chief.
"Do you think you could speed it up?"
"I'm sorry. I didn't realize I was slowing you down."
Worf grunted. "I was just..."
O'Brien cut him off, "I know, I know. Klingons don't like being slow."
"It is not that."
"Look, lets just try to get to Odo and the others."
Worf grunted an acknowledgment.

They got to the turbolift without further incident. Miles immediately started to work on the turbolift. He opened up the relay and let out a startled cry. "My God. The entire relay is burned out."
Worf looked over Miles shoulder. "How long before you can fix it?"
"We need a whole nother relay. It could take days before Starfleet can send another one."
"That's just great. Don't we have anymore on the station?"
"No, I used the last one this morning replacing a burned out relay in Ops. Bloody Cardie machinery."

Worf went over to the turbolift. "Constable can you hear me?"
"Yes." was the reply.
"I'll get you out in just a minute." Worf forced open the doors and looked down. The turbolift was stuck in-between floors. Lucky enough there was space enough to get everyone out. Worf got down on him knees to help the deputies out first. Garrett got out first. Then Lang. Then Worf pulled Maloney out. Worf looked down at the Constable.
"I can get out myself." Odo said. He started shifting to his liquid state and pulled himself out of the broken turbolift. The Constable shifted back to his humanoid state and looked at Worf.

Behind them the turbolift broke. It fell all the way down. Garrett looked terrified. "If we had been there just two minutes longer we could have died!" Garrett screamed.
"Mr. Garrett, please calm yourself. You're still here." Odo said. Odo looked at O'Brien.
"Chief, what happened in there?"
"Someone sabotaged the relay."
Odo looked startled, "Sabotage?"
"I think so." Miles looked at the circuit. The entire thing was burned, and Miles knew it hadn't happened naturally. He also knew that it wasn't a malfunction. It was just too precise.

Chapter 2

"Damn! Sabotage?"
"Captain, I..."
"Chief I don't want excuses I want answers. Now go call Starfleet and get that relay! I want the turbolift up and running as soon as possible! Now do I need to say anything more?"
"No sir." O'Brien turned and left Sisko's office.
Benjamin sat down and picked up the baseball. He turned it in his hand over and over. He started thinking of what had happened so far: one unknown lifeform, one sabotaged relay, and one turbolift severely damaged. The doors wooshed and Benjamin looked up to see Lieutenant Commander Worf enter.
"Lt. is there something I can do for you?"
Worf looked oddly out of place in Sisko's office. "Yes. That unidentified lifeform,"
"What about it?"
"It's headed to Ops."
"What?"
Sisko rushed past Worf and into Ops.
"Dax, report!"
"Benjamin, the unknown lifeform, it's headed toward Ops."
"I know that already! Tell me something I don't know, like when it'll get here!"
"It'll get here very soon."
Major Kira came to Miles' side. "Miles, the ODN relay just blew."
Miles looked horrified. "NO!" He rushed down to the relay. "Not another one!"
Sisko watched Miles run down to the relay. "Chief, hurry."
When Sisko's back was turned the thing charged into Ops knocking Sisko down.
"Dax to infirmary! One to beam down!"
A sparkle of light and Sisko disappeared from Ops.
Worf screamed. The thing's horns punctured Worf's belly and tossed him like ragdoll.
Kira's eyes were wide. "By the Prophets."
"Major, stun it!" yelled Dax.
Kira picked up her phaser and shot the beast. It whimpered and fell to the floor. Dax tapped her badge. "Dax to infirmary."
"Infirmary." Came Julian's voice.
"Julian, how long will it take you set up a level-4 forcefield in an isolated part of the infirmary?"
"Only a few minutes. Why?"
"Don't ask. Just do it. Dax out."
Dax looked over to Worf. She hadn't realized how badly he had been injured. Her eyes went wide with horror. She started breathing really hard and she closed her eyes and started to cry. Kira looked at Worf's broken body. He was lying in a position that indicated that he had a lot of broken bones. Blood was on and around him. Kira turned her eyes away, but she had to look back. When she looked back he feebly raised his hand.
"He's alive!" Kira screamed.
Dax ran over to Worf. She leaned down close to him; her uniform was bloodied with Worf's blood.
"You can't die! No, don't leave." Dax screamed.

Julian was finished setting up the forcefield and isolation booth. He looked at the Bajoran nurse standing near Sisko.
"Status."
"His pressure's normal, his heartbeat's normal. Everything is down to normal levels Doctor."
"Good. Now I..."
His commbadge chirped.
"Infirmary."
It was Jadzia's voice. "Julian, get another bed ready."
"Acknowledged."
"Fine. Dax out."
Something is wrong with Jadzia, he thought. She sounded upset. He came back to reality. "Get another table ready, Fenra."
"Yes sir."
Just then three forms beamed in. He could tell that one was Jadzia, but the other two he didn't know. She looked at Julian. "Don't let him die. Please!"
Julian looked at the bloody thing in her arms. It was Worf! "Help me get him up here."
Jadzia and Julian both picked up Worf and placed him on the table. He grabbed his tools and started to operate. "Fenra! Get the dermal regenerator, quick!" Julian looked up. "Jadzia, maybe you should leave."
"No, um, where's the isolation booth?"
"Around the corner."
"Yea, ok, um, yea." She picked up the thing and took it to the isolation booth. She let down the forcefield and put it in the booth. She stepped back and put the forcefield back up. She came back into the main room. Julian's head hung low. He looked up at Jadzia. "He's still slipping. I can't do anything more for him. He's asking for you."
Jadzia stood sobbing but went over to him. "No, you can't die."
"I must," he sputtered "It must be an honorable death. Jadzia...will you kill me first?"
"NO! NO! NO!" she cried.
"Please, let me die honorably." It was plainly obvious that every word caused excruciating pain. He held out his dagger. "Please."
"No I can't do it."
"I am no longer a warrior," he growled at her. "But at least let me die like one."
"I-I-I can't."
"Jadzia, please."
She took the dagger out of his hand and looked over her shoulder at Julian. He just stood there. He couldn't do anything about it. Worf was going to die either way. Julian took a step closer. Jadzia looked back to Worf. His eyes were fixed intensely on her. She brought the knife down but couldn't do it.
"I can't."
Julian looked at her. "Ok, I will..."
Horrified she and Fenra looked at Julian. In unison they said, "You can't be serious!" "Well why not? He wants an honorable death."
"No Julian."
"Then I suggest you do it Jadzia, before he dies a dishonorable death."
Crying she plunged the dagger into him. His eyes clouded over. He spoke a final word-thanks. Jadzia screamed and turned to Julian. "He's dead!" she cried. Julian took her in his arms and she cried on his shoulder.

Chapter 3

Sisko was back to work. He hadn't been hurt very bad. He thought the week was off to a bad start. Yes, very bad. One officer killed and who know what else will go wrong. They still hadn't figured out what the beast was, but it had a nickname, the beast. Sisko had just sat down when the door opened. Odo entered. "Constable may I help you?"
"Sir, I think I know where the beast came from."
"Where?"
"All I can conclude is the Gamma Quadrant."
"Yes, I realize that now but what I need to know, Constable, is how the hell that thing got ON the station in the FIRST place!" said Sisko.
"Sir, I think"
"NO! No more thinking just get me answers!"
"Yes sir." Odo turned around and left.

Odo went on his usual rounds to Quarks Bar and when he go there the place was in shambles. Odo went up to the bar. "Quark, what happened here?"
"Well I'd have told you if you'd have listened to me earlier,"
"Quark I don't want to hear your complaining. Just tell me what happened."
"That beast thing that you guys caught. I know where it's from."
Odo grabbed one of Quarks lobes and dragged him to Sisko's office.
"I believe this is your answer."
Quark looked bewildered. He looked up at Sisko. "Um, morning sir."
"Quark."
"I swear it isn't my fault! The Constable just needs someone to blame. He always blames me!"
"That's because you usually are responsible." Odo said.
"It's not true!" Quark protested.
"Cut it Quark! Now tell me everything you know."
Quark looked miserable. "Well, it's from the Gamma Quadrant,"
"We know that." Sisko grumbled. "Tell us something we don't know."
"Well, it is called a Rethapen. It comes from Ret, the sixth planet in the Turulan system. They use it to watch prisoners." Quark squeaked out.
"Well, how did it get ON the station?"
"A few days ago I bought it from a Rethian."
"Is there anything else you know about it?"
Quark scratched his left ear. "No, all I know is what he told me..."
Sisko looked at Quark. "What the HELL were you thinking? And just HOW did you expect to get that thing get on board without me knowing it?"
"Well I have ways..."
"Quark! You are in serious trouble. Constable, throw him in a holding cell until Starfleet can get here."
"With pleasure." Odo said.
"No you can't!" Quark screamed. "I have rights, call the Nagus!"
Sisko looked at Odo and held his arm out, pointing to the door. "Constable." Odo grabbed Quark's ear. "Come on."
"Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow!"

Odo took Quark to the holding cell.
"Odo,"
"What?" Odo eyed Quark. Quark could have sworn Odo was smiling.
"What did I do?"
Odo grunted. "What did you do? Well let me read you the charges: reckless endangerment, assault, murder, and about three hundred other charges."
"Assault, murder? I've never hurt anyone."
"No, but your "pet" did."
"Who?"
"Well, the thing knocked down Captain Sisko, and killed Worf. If it had killed Sisko, you would be charged with double murder."
"But I didn't do it."
"Doesn't matter."

Odo went back to Ops. Kira went over to him. "Sisko wants to see you in his office." Odo went up to Sisko's office. Sisko looked up as the constable entered. "You wanted to see me sir?"
"Yes. Starfleet is sending the Enterprise to take Quark. She'll be here in a few hours. Make sure they watch Quark."
"Yes sir."
"Dismissed."
Odo turned and went back to his office.
Sisko watched him leave. He rubbed his head and was thinking about who to send to take the beast to Starfleet Headquarters. Admiral Nechiev said the Enterprise couldn't take it because the officer and crew on Federation's flagship were too important if something happened. He told her that his people were important too but she wouldn't send another ship or let the Enterprise take it. He picked up the baseball and threw it. He knew who to send.

Sisko tapped his commbadge. "Sisko to Dax."
"Yes, Benjamin?"
"Report to my office immediately. Out"
Dax left her quarters and headed to Ops. She had been crying. She got to Ops and went up to Benjamin's office. The door wooshed and she entered. She looked about the room and noticed Julian sitting in there already. Benjamin looked up and motioned for Dax to sit down. "Now. I called you both here because I need you two to take the "beast" to Starfleet Headquarters.
"But Benjamin, I..."
"I know you're mourning Worf's death, but I think you should do this. It will help you."
"Yes, sir." She looked at Benjamin. "I'll do my best."
"And that's why Julian is going too. If you freak out or have a breakdown he will be there. Also, I want both of you to be careful with that thing. Report to upper pylon two at 1800 hours."
"Why?" Jadzia asked.
"To meet with Captain Picard. He will instruct you further on this assignment."
Julian and Jadzia both stood up in unison.
"Understood."
"Understood."
"Good. Dismissed."
Julian and Jadzia left the room.

Chapter 4

Julian got up to upper pylon two a little early. He was in his dress uniform. Meeting Picard was a big thing. He'd talked to Picard before but never met him. Captain Jean-Luc Picard was a legend. Not as big a legend as Kirk, but Picard was still a legend. The Enterprise was docking in four minutes. Where was Jadzia? Usually she was here early as well. The doors started to open. Julian looked around and no Jadzia in sight. The doors were almost open when Jadzia rushed up to Julian's side.
"Sorry I'm late."
"What took you so long?"
"Nothing. Don't worry about it."
The doors were totally open and Captain Picard came out of the airlock with two others, Commander Riker and Lieutenant Commander Data. Julian stood up straighter. "Sir, it's nice to see you again." Julian said as he extended his hand to Picard. Picard clasped his hand. "Nice to see you to Doctor. I just wish it was under better circumstances." He looked at Jadzia. "And who's this?"
"Lieutenant Commander Jadzia Dax. Nice to meet you sir."
"Yes."
Riker and Data introduced themselves to Jadzia for Julian needed no introduction.
"I suppose you want to get Quark as soon as possible?" Julian inquired.
"Yes, but before we take him we have to finish briefing you on the handling of the thing."
"I understand." Said Julian.
"Now, could you take us to it?"
"Right this way." Julian motioned for them to follow him. He led them down the corridor and to the infirmary. Once in the infirmary he led them to the booth. Fenra looked up from her work. She starred as Julian, Picard, Jadzia, Riker, and Data went to the back. She looked back to her work. It wasn't her business.

The thing had woken up. It was banging around the forcefield but it couldn't get out. The thing saw the people standing around him and it started growling. Data looked a little startled by the thing's appearance.
"Curious, what is it?" Data asked.
"It's a Rethapen. As far as we know it's from the Gamma Quadrant. A planet called Ret. We also know it can toss a Klingon around like a ragdoll and it does not like people."
"Speaking of Klingons, where's Worf?" Riker asked.
Jadzia started to cry. "You mean you don't know?"
"Know what?" Picard asked.
"The reason we know it can toss Klingons around like a ragdoll is because it killed Worf."
Riker and Picard stood horrified. Data looked puzzled.
"Admiral Nechiev never mentioned Worf's death."
"Maybe she didn't want to upset anyone." Julian said. "His death hit the Chief pretty hard." "Yes, I guess it would hit anyone on the Enterprise hard."
They all looked down. Then Dax's commbadge chirped.
"Dax."
"Jadzia, I need everyone down in Ops immediately."
"Yes, Benjamin."
"Sisko out."
Jadzia looked at everyone. "You heard the Captain."
Julian, Picard, Riker, Data, and Jadzia all went down to Ops. They all went over to Sisko.
"What's up Benjamin?" Jadzia asked.
Sisko looked at Kira. "On screen Major."
The viewscreen showed a Klingon Negh'Var battlecruiser. Dax looked at Benjamin.

"What is that thing doing here?"
"We don't know. It won't respond to our hails. And we are not letting it dock."
"Benjamin, maybe I could talk to..."
"No. You and Julian get the beast and get to runabout pad C. The Rio Grande is waiting there."
Both Dax and Julian looked at him. "Yes sir."

Dax and Julian went to the infirmary. He sedated the beast and they both picked it up and they were transported to the Rio Grande. They heaved the beast into the back room and put up the forcefield. Dax went to her seat and Julian went to his. Julian set coordinates and a few other things and Dax hailed Ops.
"Release docking clamps."
"Docking clamps released."
"See you all later."
"Good luck you two," said Kira.
The Rio Grande departed. A few minutes later the Enterprise undocked and left. The Klingon cruiser waited for a minute then it followed the Rio Grande and not the Enterprise.
"Curious." said Sisko.
"What?"
"That Negh'Var cruiser is following Dax and Bashir not Picard."
"Do you think they know about that thing on board?"
"I don't know, but ready the Defiant. We're going to see."

Chapter 5

Dax looked at the console in front of her. They had been at warp 2 for almost three hours. They couldn't shake the cruiser but it didn't make any threatening gestures.
"Is that ship still following us?"
"Yes Julian, I'm afraid it is."
"Great, we've been trying to shake it for three hours and it won't go away."
"I wonder why it doesn't cloak. If I didn't know better I think they want us to be scared."
"It won't work."
"I know."
Then controls all over the runabout started to beep. Jadzia looked at the readings. "The cruiser is gaining speed."
Julian looked at the control. "They're hailing us."
"Put it through."
A very ugly old Klingon general came on the screen. "Ghoqbogh 'Oh to Federation vessel. Stop your engines and prepare to be boarded."
"I am Lieutenant Commander Jadzia Dax. You have no authority here, you're in Bajoran space and this is a Federation vessel. Any attempt to board us and Starfleet will hear about this."
"You are mistaken Commander. I believe you have something that belongs to us on board."
"I don't know what you're talking about. We're on official Starfleet business."
"A likely story. But the cargo belongs to The Klingon High Council."
Then it started to come together. The night before Worf's death he said something about having important information that could get him killed. He was even scared! He said if his enemies found out he had it they would do anything to make sure that he couldn't tell the truth. The High Council must have found out. They had him killed. Jadzia looked Julian and then at the Klingon. "They killed him."
"Killed who?" The Klingon asked.
"You tell me."
"I wouldn't know."
"How long have you known about the thing?"
"For a very long time. They are a breed of Targ from Rura Penthe."
"Then Quark knew the truth?"
"No, Quark only knew what the Rethian told him. He's a stupid Ferengi. Anything for a price."
"I wouldn't call him stupid. He just might know more than you think. But a lot of people got hurt and killed from it. How could you put such a thing on the station?"
"Just because Worf was killed doesn't mean..."
"Worf? Who said anything about Worf?"
"You did."
"No I didn't."
The Klingon got really mad. "Prepare to be boarded!"
The last thing Dax and Bashir remembered before waking up in a Klingon holding cell was the Negh'Var overtaking them and Klingons hitting them over the head.

Chapter 6

Sisko turned to Kira. "What just happened? Where did they go?"
"Sir, I believe that Negh'Var overtook the Rio Grande and now has Dax and Bashir.
"Damn! I don't need two more officers getting hurt or possibly killed!"
"I know. But we couldn't do anything. That cruiser is more than a match for the Defiant. Sir, half of the ships systems are down anyway. There's no way we could have survived an attack."
"Is she still cloaked?"
"Yes."
"Good. Let's follow that ship. We might not know what happened to them but I'm not going to sit here and let them be possibly killed."
"Yes sir. They are changing course and are headed back to Klingon territory."
"Follow them."
"Already done sir."
"Take us to warp six."
"Aye."

The Defiant was following the Klingon cruiser close behind at warp 6.78. They had been following for almost 4 hours and still nothing. Sisko wondered where the cruiser was going. Also wondering if Jadzia and Julian were still alive.
"Sir, the Negh'Var is changing course." Said the ensign.
"What's the heading?"
"Our sensors say somewhere deep in..." the ensign looked very puzzled.
"Where?"
The ensign looked at Sisko. "Cardassian space!"
"Cardassian space? What's in Cardassian space that the Klingons need?" Kira asked.
"I don't know. Perhaps they're going to start a war."
Kira spun in her chair and looked at Sisko. "You can't be serious!"
"Major, if I knew what was going to happen..."
Kira looked down at her console.

Chapter 7

Jadzia was in a maze. Everywhere she turned she could see Worf. She kept thinking about the night before his death. He said something about having important information that could get him killed. He was scared. He said if his enemies found out he had it they would do anything to make sure that he couldn't tell the truth. The High Council must have found out. They had him killed. She knew they had him killed. What other explanation is there? She heard a voice. It sounded like Julian's.
"Jadzia. Wake up." Julian was thoroughly shaking her. "Jadzia come on, get up!"
She blinked and sat up. She held the back of her head. "Oh, my head." She looked at her hand and a trickle of blood was on it. "I'm bleeding!"
"I know. You have a cut from where the Klingon hit you. You've been unconscious for almost three hours."
"Three hours?"
"Yes."
Jadzia leaned back against the wall. "Do you know where they're taking us?"
"No."
"Oh." She looked at the room. It couldn't have been more than six feet long and six feet wide. It looked to be about seven feet high. There were two beds, both nailed to the walls. This was a Klingon brig. She knew it was because her former host, Curzon, had been in enough of them. A Klingon guard came in with some food. She let down the forcefield and shoved the food in.
"Here's some food."
"Where are you taking us?" Julian asked.
"It's none of your concern, for now."
She turned and walked out of the room.

Julian got up and sat down on the bed across from Jadzia. He leaned against the wall. "I'm not going to eat that." He said as he pointed to the Klingon food. "It looks like it has mold on it."
Jadzia got up and went over to the food. "It is mold."
Julian looked really sick. "So what will we eat? We can't eat that."
"I don't know."
Julian looked about the room, hoping to find some way to escape. He stood up and started pacing the room. Dax watched him pace. "I know what you're thinking, and there isn't any way out."
Julian stopped and looked at her. "How can you be sure? We haven't even tried."
"Believe me I know. I've tried, and I failed. So just sit down and wait."
His face distorted with rage he screamed, "Wait for what?! That's what I want to know! I can't just sit here and wait for something to kill me! Or you! I don't want anything to happen to you Jadzia. I couldn't live with myself if something happened to you."
She looked up at him from where she was sitting on the floor. "Julian, I can take care of myself. Especially around Klingons! Don't worry about me, I'll be fine."
"I can't help it Jadzia, I love you, and I could never live with myself if you were killed."
"Julian, I..."
"No, please don't say it Jadzia. It's not an infatuation, I love you."
She shook her head and looked back up to him. She almost said something but changed her mind and shook her head again. Julian went back to his bed.
