The Legalization of Abused Substances

A Plan to Solve the Deficit

Ever since the dawn of the Revolution, America has been plagued by a single problem. This problem has survived for 221 years. This heinous problem, of which there are few solutions, has but one name: the deficit. Many solutions have been thought of, but they have either been limited to the point of uselessness, or have met a gruesome demise at the hands of politicians. One solution has the potential to have the full effect of not being decimated by the Senate, while at the same time allowing the deficit to go up in smoke, literally. The solution is this: legalize illegal drugs.

Legalizing drugs is not the only part of the solution. A hefty tariff would have to be placed on all incoming substances of the illegal-drug nature. Also, the sales of drugs would have to be monitored and a tax would also have to be placed on the sales themselves. A license would also be required for the purchase of the various substances. This is not the first occurrence that a proposal of this nature has been brought forth for consideration. Timothy Leary, a man with a vision, and enough ‘moolah’ to run for Governor of California. Did he not say: "Legalize Drugs! (inhaling deeply, now in a tiny, strained voice) They is good for the soul!" Maybe he didn’t say it, but the meaning came out loud and clear.

The legalization will reduce the deficit in a number of ways, not all of them pleasant. First, the taxes will go straight to paying the deficit, and the tariff will go to paying the people who watch over sales and the borders. For example: whatever the cost of a dime-bag of marijuana, the tax would be twenty-percent of the total cost. Therefore, the tax is variable to the price of the drug. The license would have to be renewed semiannual and have a starting fee and age of at least 25. The money obtained by the distribution of the licenses would be applied to other funding areas concerned with the legalization process. These are but a few of the ways the legalization of drugs would help bring in money to the government.

The problems with this proposal are few, but dangerous. Many people may become addicted to the various drugs, but that would be their own fault for using them. As if fewer people are addicted to drugs now simply because they are illegal. This in turn may reduce the number of people in the U.S. -i.e., people dying of overdoses and such-, and it may even have more money brought in because of the number of rehab patients that would become apparent. Many would argue that this opinion may be inhumane, but that feeling would probably extend to the entire proposal.

This proposal brings about the idea to legalize drugs in a manner that would reduce the deficit. This would allow the government to partake in other beneficial programs such as healing the sick, homing the homeless, and making really big ‘bomb-bombs’ for other governments to fear and to provide for our protection. This in turn would allow the U.S. to maintain its high standing as the top world power. Unfortunately, partaking in this will not be an option for me, as I still live at home with Mom and Dad, and they are soon moving to Canada.
