The Happy-Meter - just how did that romance turn out? Was true love and devotion rewarded, or did TPTB screw over the fans yet again? The results within are interesting.... Only couples that were "meant to be", and a primary focus, from series that have ended are included below.
Fandom | Together at the end? | Parted by Death? | Parted by Evil Network Politics? |
The X-Files - Mulder and Scully | Yeah! Complete with baby.
Babylon 5 - John and Delenn | Yes - kind of. (In spirit.) | Yes - in a sense, after 20 years.
Now and Again - Michael and Lisa | Yes - with dark forces hovering.
7 Days - Frank and Olga | Damn, Damn, Damn. (Olga left, show got cancelled.)
Babylon 5 - Ivanova and Marcus | Tragic death scene
Beauty and the Beast - Catherine and Vincent | Awful, horrible sequence which crushed fans. | Partially their fault.... (Actress left)
Earth 2 - Devon and Danziger | Practically (cold sleep, anyone?)
Space: Above and Beyond - Nathan and Kylen | Yes, but they'd suffered so much.
The Pretender - Jarod and Miss Parker | Left hanging...well, exploding....

STAR WARS - Leia and Han | Married, children, it's gonna be forever (temporary estrangement notwithstanding)
Star Trek: TNG - Riker and Troi | I guess so... (thank you, JF!) | TPTB tried their best to ruin it!
Star Trek: TNG - Crusher and Picard | Stomp, stomp, stomp
Star Trek: Voyager - Janeway and Chakotay | TPTB ripped the hope from devoted J/Cers in an abysmal final episode.
Xena - Xena and Gabrielle | ? (We should know very soon) | ?
Star Trek TOS - Kirk and Spock | Ta Da! Killing Kirk = makes more money, but certain actors had no wish to be involved.
Due South - Fraser and RayK | Yes - riding off into the sunrise together on an adventure.
The Sentinel - Jim and Blair | Yes - official partners at the PD.
Totals: | 10 | 4 | 7 |
Looking at the results - this is NOT good for Soulmates-type romance! Slightly less than half of the couples considered actually got to the "happily ever after" stage. And at least two of those aren't necessarily in love - it's more of a bonding-soulmate relationship that we're shown.
So for onscreen love, it's down to 7/19 (counting halves), or just over one third.
And they say that Shippers have no right to be so happy with The X-Files! We need hope, friends! Hope in love. :)
(And bring on the Buffy/Spike! *eg*)
