LEGENDS - The FAQ!
Did I ever think I'd need one of these for one of my stories? No.
But since a lot of you wonderful people asked questions, here are
the answers. Enjoy.
1. Who is Gillian Brody supposed to be? Is she you?
Gillian is supposed to represent all Earth 2 fans. I may have
incorporated parts of myself into her character (haven't we all
been harassed about being obsessed with E2 at some time) but she is
not meant to be me. Through Gillian, I was attempting to
illustrate how people can become fanatical about 'things' that have
no real bearing on our lives.
(In saying this, I am discounting the good impact of "Earth 2" - ie
it helps us to realise that we should care for our planet etc.)
2. Why did you choose a teen as the 'main' character?
How many adults are willing to believe in magic? How many adults
would actually head out across the desert on a chase based on
dreams? Very few. For the Legends Trilogy to be believable, I
needed a character who would do this sort of thing, almost a child,
but without the parental entanglement.
3. Why did you kill Julia?
As I said in chat one day, "Somebody had to die...." ;)
Realistically, people don't live for ever. Almost everyone knows
someone who has died young, in the prime of their life. Accidents
*do* happen and as much as we try and deny it, not everyone gets to
live happily ever after.
4. Why did Danziger go crazy?
He lost Ellie and Devon, enough to drive anyone completely nuts (as
MC so eloquently put it).
Okay, so realistically, John Danziger was probably stronger than
that. But I needed him crazy for the story, okay? Otherwise it
wouldn't have worked!
5. Why did Morgan get to be in control of the colony at New
Pacifica?
Because I love him so much. 'Nuff said.
6. Are the names of the 'extras' in the story significant?
Um...er...no, I'm completely creative!
::sigh:: You want a complete listing of every name I borrowed?
(Omitting the names I took from real life, I'll let the owners
breathe easily and safe in the knowledge that they remain
anonymous, okay Donna?)
Some of them are pretty obscure, but others are obvious.
Gillian Brody - Gillian after Gillian Anderson (star of "The X-
Files".
Brody after Jim Brody (RIP) in seaQuest DSV.
Lukas Brody - Lukas after Lucas in seaQuest DSV.
Alex Danthinore - Alex after Alex Krycek in "The X-Files".
Danthinore after The Witches of Danthinore in
the STAR WARS novel "The Courtship of Princess
Leia" (yes, I know I've messed up the spelling.)
Jerry Danthinore - After Jerry O'Connell (star of "Sliders).
Jessie Solace - I swear, I DIDN'T name her after Jessica Steen!
I was thinking of Jessie from "Saved By The Bell",
a show I loved years ago.
Ariel Martin - Ariel after Ariel the Little Mermaid (a movie I
absolutely adore!)
Lissa and Ethan Solace - Well, Ethan is my favorite name for a
guy, and Lissa was a character in a
story I wrote in 1994 where an asteroid
wiped out Earth.
Starissa and Kevin Baines - Starissa is what I would love to name
my future daughter. Okay? She also
appeared in my 1992 story called "Destiny"
(along with Destiny, another great name).
Kevin - well, I just happen to like it.
Well, I think that's about it! If you actually read this, then
drop me a note and let me know. I'll be a very happy Nic then.
