Cryptozoology is, literally, the study of hidden animals. You might consider it the illegitimate child of paranormal sciences and zoology. Contrary to common belief, we have not discovered all the animals, plants, insects, etc. that there are. New species are frequently turning up, most especially in Vietnam right now. Many cryptozoological creatures had their starts in folklore or mythology. The giant squid, which was considered to be a myth until it was proven otherwise, was probably the basis for the kraken. Alien Big Cats are among my personal favorites. A lion was reportedly sighted in the late '60's early '70's in Rockford. Loren Coleman covers it more fully in Mysterious America. There was also talk about a large cat in the rural areas south of Rockford in the late '70's. The last mountain lion was killed there around 100 years ago and is now housed in the Burpee Museum.
