AASIMAR: CHILDREN OF THE UPPER PLANES. DISCUSSION AND PRESENTATION IN MANY PARTS : PART THE SECOND.
By Sir Sevrian Sacheverill Speck-Spotter, FOO (PoCSaOD)*
In my work with Gavlan Quillibite, I have chosen to study the fey and chaotic eladrin and their progeny. My fascination with this people has placed me in the ideal position to discuss them for the ongoing plane-touched survey. Sometimes called eladrinar, the offspring of the Faerie Knights are frequently a force to be reckoned with, and are among the commonest aasimar.
De Liberis Eladrinorum (Concerning the Children of the Eladrin):
Bralani - The wild, nomadic bralani who wander the wastes of Pelion give rise to children who share their love of open spaces. Typical is Stiomi of the Seven Leagues (pl/female aasimar/Ranger 6/Free League/N), who is nominally in command of a small band of rangers in the Outlands, and can often be found near Sylvania with her companions. Her pale skin and honest features belie a wicked cunning when needed and tremendous skill in er craft as a ranger. Fond of open spaces of another kind, Louis aux Cheveux Blanches (pl/male aasimar/F9/CN) is a successful spelljammer captain dealing in 'small packages' in and around the prime sphere of Realmspace. He is thought to be wanted for questioning by the Elven Imperial Navy after a recent incident concerning mithral armour shipments going astray. Neither aasimar ever talks of their parents, who presumably moved on while they were young.
Coure - Coures, being the commonest eladrin, might be expected to have give rise to the most aasimar. But this is not the case. Their tiny size prevents them from being compatible with any humanoid race taller than about 4'. Marco Il Putto (pl/male aasimar/Bard 2/Society of Sensation/CG) had a halfling father and a coure mother. He can often be found in or near the gilded hall in Arborea, although he seems immune to the temptation to stay that the place exerts. Plump and jolly, he looks for all the world like a baby human with wings, and seems more innocent than many sensates, although he's actually well-travelled and experienced.
Noviere - The noviere are seagoing people, and their offspring, dubbed noviar, reflect this. They strongly resemble certain water genasi in appearance, and love the sea above all else. Some are blessed with the power to breathe underwater, and others with an infallible sense of direction at sea. There are many oceans on the planes besides Aquallor, and in Thalasia, Elysium, a noviar named Quolololo (pl/female aasimar/Priest (Brigantia) 4/Transcendent Order/NG) can be met, swimming in the sea or wandering the woods of Avalon. Beautiful and slender, with palest blue skin, she guides those who are lost in the layer to civilisation (something she otherwise steers well clear of), and spends the remainder of her time singing haunting songs to herself.
Far less helpful is Acklackla (pl/female aasimar/Thief 6/LE) who shunned her celestial parents and now works for Levistus' forces in Stygia, Baator. Her faithful and ruthless service has put her in command of a brigade of abishai who spy upon those coming into the layer by way of the Styx. Levistus thinks she is very promising, and admires her ambition, and will therefore probably have her killed before many more years pass. Her skin and hair look like ice, gaining her the nickname 'the Ice Maiden', although she's certainly no maiden, and has had a number of tiefling sons by mid-ranked baatezu.
Shiere - The shieres, fearsome knights of the Faery Courts, take many lovers and have many children. Those aasimar resemble closely the high elves, and have much in common with them. A prime example is Ulosir Yngediel (pl/male aasimar/Priest (Corellon Larethian) 9/Enchanter 8/Believers of the Source/CG), who serves Corellon faithfully in Arvandor, and who resembles an elf of the purest blood, save that he is surrounded in the hours of darkness by a flickering aura like faerie fire. Ulosir says nothing of his ancestry, but most attribute this to his fine sense of honour, which he never compromises, although he is very fickle and unpredictable in many other ways.
Firre - The firres travel far and wide in search of cultural excellence. On a trip to the Prime Plane, a firre named Heldenmeldengeldenvach Caressilel Jerthomi encountered a young sculptress called Sophia. Enchanted by her beauty, and by the skill of her carving which reflected her own fair form, he appeared before her as an elf and confessed his feelings, but not his nature. For two months Sophia became a recluse, or so it seemed to her patron the Duke of Omini. She left her studio only to get food, of which she seemed to buy an awful lot, including oysters and other things. At the end of the two months Held (for short) left, for he was asked to come and advise a Tulani on a matter of taste. To avoid the restriction on unveiling his nature, he formed a plan. Leaving Sophia with great tenderness and sorrow, he returned to Arborea. When Sophia unveiled her latest statue, which was acclaimed her greatest work, it was of a beautiful male elf. But the plaque upon the base said 'The Firre Eladrin Heldenmeldengeldenvach Caressilel Jerthomi in mortal form. For Sophia, with eternal love", and the eyes of the statue had turned to rubies. Eight months later, Sophia gave birth to a son who looked like an elf with eyes of ruby, and named him Arvandor, after his father's home. Arvandor is now the new Duchess of Omini's court painter, court composer, and court artist. He has sworn that one day, he will travel to Arborea and paint or sculpt his father's true likeness.
Ghaele - The ghaeles associate more with mortals than any other eladrin. Often, this brings them great sadness. But in one case, associating with a mortal lifted the sadness of a ghaele's heart. Larisseala was a ghaele who had struggled in vain to prevent the overthrow of a good kingdom on the Prime. Returning in sorrow after watching those she had watched over in years of war killed or dispersed by an invading tyrant, amongst them King Anselm, the rightful king and her close friend, who was killed in his own dungeons, she ran away from the Tulani whom she served and went to Sigil. There for many months she was a regular sight in the taverns of the city, drinking strong liquor and eating sour things. Eventually, she was approached by a young human named Giorgio Buondelcastro who asked her to tell her story. Touched by his concern, she poured out her story to him, and he was moved to tears. They met again after that, and again. Before long they had got married, and after a few years they had two children. Each child had pointed ears and opalescent eyes. Paisiei (Pl/male aasimar/Psi 11/ Guardians/CG) and Polyquet (Pl/female aasimar/Necro (white) 12/Guardians/CG) grew up among the trials of the Cage, and longed to avenge their mother's enemies. Travelling of their own will to the Prime world where Larisseala's story had ended in tragedy, they tracked down the now aged survivors of the war, and the heirs of the fallen, and bound them together into the core of a successful rebel army, which eventually overthrew the original tyrant's evil son and set up King Lothuoli as the rightful heir. However, when it came to prove the 'King's' brithright, no-one could remember his mother. Eventually, Larisseala returned, her true identity known only to her children, and announced that in fact Lothuoli was her son, conceived by her with Anselm when they had been fleeing before the enemy army in the last days of the war, and born the day before she left the burning kingdom. Despite Lothuoli looking entirely human, the story turned out to be true. United with their half-brother (Pr/male aasimar/F9/LG), Paisiei and Polyquet at last felt cleansed of their mother's anguish, and she too was cheerful again, more happy even than when she married Giorgio. She attended her son's coronation before announcing her true nature to the assmebled company and returning to live in well-deserved partial retirement with Giorgio.
Tulani - The Faerie Lords are amongst the most reclusive Eladrin. Most never have mortal children, but one polyandrous Faery Lady named Psuthiu has a whole harem of mortal men. Her reasons are unknown, beyond her obvious craving for pleasure, but all her consorts seem quite happy. One of her children is Lereania (Px/female aasimar/P13 (Oberon)/Sensate/CG), who serves the King of the Faries wherever the Seelie Court may go. Her noble features and ladylike bearing, combined with godly power coursing through her limbs, make her a cutter worthy of the highest respect. Another of Psuthiu's children, Cosque the Moral (Pl/male aasimar/Pal 14/Brethren/LG), was disgusted by what he saw as his mother's promiscuity, and joined the Order of Planes-Militant. He is presently deputy under-warden of the Third Monastery, which he considers an undeserved honour. He hates having pointy ears, and wears a helm at all times to hide them.
