Frank is sent back to stop an assassin named Sexy Sadie from killing an important minister trying to bring about peace, but is hindered by a bounty hunter named Rhino.
This episode is a curious mixture of good and bad. So let’s take them both separately.
Bad: Sexy Sadie, played by long-time genre favourite Anne Marie Loder, starts off well and is quite sinister. But sadly her lapse into a dreadful Irish accent towards the end spoils things somewhat. The main plot: the problem is that that’s pretty much all there is. The only sub-plot involves Rhino and Frank beating the crap out of each other, which doesn’t make for great entertainment but instead gets really annoying. Oh, and the end where he falls from a great height and lives is ludicrous. He might be tough, but he can’t be totally indestructible.
Good: Rhino himself is quite a good character, something better shown by the end of the episode than the start. His relationship with Frank is nicely offset by his relationship with Donovan, who’s never given him any problems. It’s nice to see Frank being told to rely on his colleagues at the end, as hopefully this might involve the others more in future. Relationships: the bond between the Backstep team has never been better than here. Donovan and Frank act like kids, but Donovan spots the killer when he needs to. Olga is put in peril, has a dreadful and funny date and almost gets her just desserts by ignoring the untrustworthy Frank and his letter from her future self. And then there’s Ramsey. Frank and Donovan play him superbly, getting him to do just what they want by using his own paranoia against him. Plus, Frank playing golf at Nate’s car and the subsequent fight are sublime.
So there you go. Plenty of good laughs, an average plot, but a chance to see a cast having fun, and that can be no bad thing. Oh, and it’s not based on a film.
