Other Horror Movies

NEW as of August 3rd, 1998
Silence of the Lambs 2
A scooper for Dark Horizon's reported this not too long ago: "Not sure if this is old news or not, but..... As I was flipping around on the ole' boob tube the other day I happened to catch the tale end of an interview with Sir Anthony Hopkins, on a local Station in Toronto. (I believe it was CTV, but was not really paying attention) What he had to say was very interesting indeed, and went something like this....

Reporter: So I hear that you are not going to do a Silence of the Lambs sequel?

Hopkins: Who said that?

Reporter: Well....you did!

Hopkins: I said no such thing! All it takes is one repoter to make up something and then everyone is quoting you on it. As a matter of fact, I may be doing it early next year.

The 'London Sunday Times' reports that author Thomas Harris is at present polishing his new novel 'The Morbidity of the Soul'. The moment that has been completed, the screenplay for this sequel will be immediately written and hopefully be complete by very early 1999 for shooting next summer. Sir Anthony Hopkins is rumoured to be earning 15 million pounds (English money) to reprise the famous role of Dr. Hannibal 'the Cannibal' Lecter, making him the highest paid British actor ever.

Also according to the arrticle, Hopkins said "I love playing Hannibal: he is great fun". So it looks fairly certain. It'll be directed by Jonathan Demme again, and Jodie Foster is going to be in it again.

However, we're not likely to see it any time soon 'cos, according to the article, not only has Hopkins got 4 more films to make Thomas Harris (author of Silence of the Lambs) hasn't finished writng the book yet. They don't say anything about the plot of the film, other than it has elements of Pierto Pacciani (a Tuscan farmer accused of preying on courting couples in the 50's who died this year).

Candyman 3
Candyman is the latest franchise to be receiving another sequel. Artisan Entertainment has made a deal with Turi Meyer and Al Septien to write and produce the third entry in the series. The film is slated to do directly to video.

Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies
Actress Holly Fields (Runaway Daughters, Seedpeople) has signed to play the female lead in the sequel to Wes Craven's Wishmaster, titled Evil Never Dies. She will play Morgana, an art thief who becomes plagued by nightmares after she unwittingly unleases a powerful, evil force on modern society. Andrew Dixoff will return as the Wishmaster. The film is being written and directed by Jack Shoulder for Artisan Entertainment.

The $2.5 million film is currently shooting in LA, with writer-director Jack Sholder (Nightmare on Elm Street II: Freddy's Revenge, The Omen TV RE-Make).

NEW as of June 23rd, 1998
Ok, the basic outline for Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies is as follows, As in the first film, a Djinn sometimes called Demarest has to claim a thousand and one souls before it can inherit the meek. It'll also have to go through Morgana, an improbably-named punker thief, and Gregory, her lustfully-thinking Catholic priest buddy. Suffice it to say that Demerest the Djinn will "befriend" a Russian-American mafioso, and that the final showdown takes place in Sin City, Lost Wages. It'll end with a lot gore and some really nasty stuff-and probably as in all movies, the good guy will come out victorious and the world will be safe.

Children of the Dead
Here is what is said to be the plot line for the new installment to the Dead series. (Night of, Day of and Dawn of.) "The story begins as the "zombie squads" sweep across the country exterminating the last of the ghouls (as we saw in the end of Night). We follow a crew through Pittsburgh (of course). The squads come across one of the last remaining rescue shelters/hosiptals. Inside, they find the few remaining survivors that have managed to escape the plague of murders. Among them is a pregnant woman. As the squad tries to help with the sick and injured, a lone zombie manages to sneak by them and gain entrance to the facility. They mistake him for one of the injured, until he takes a massive bite from the arm of the pregnant woman. They exterminate the zombie, but it is too late for the woman.

The stress of the incident forces the woman into labor. The baby is born just before the woman dies of her injuries. The baby is turned over to the army who have to decide if it is safe to let it live. Meanwhile, similar incidents occur across the country. All the children are ordered to be turned over to the army. After thorough medical exams, the babbies are determined to be healthy. They decide the children can be allowed to live, but must be closely observed throughout their lives.

They set up a program to allow the children to be adopted by specially chosen parents who pass a rigorous screening process. The parents must keep detailed journals of incidents throughout the life of the child, and they must report to government facilities every month for medical evaluations. The children must be taken to special doctors when they are sick, and they must report to chosen school to be monitored throughout their lives.

For the first few years, everything seems to be fine. The children grow normally, and there are no medical problems. But, complications begin when the children reach puberty. Almost all of them begin to show symptoms of a rare disease (I don't remember what it was called, but he said it is a real disease that probably started the vampire stories... it causes the skin to turn pale white, and the gums to receed from the teeth, making them appear large. People with the disease do benifit from drinking blood because it gives them heavy doses of the nutrients that they are missing), and the government begins to panic.

They put the children in quarentine for more evaluation, but eventually decide that they will be okay and release them again to their parents. Just after this, a rash of murders occur in Pittsburgh. All of the victims have gaping bite wounds somewhere on their bodies, and most are missing some blood. The number of bodies grow, as the homeless population is wiped out. And before long, the bodies of the murder victims begin to rise again. The children are commiting these murders, and their victims become infected with the strange chemical or virus that is present in the children's body that was passed to them through their infected mother. The children are immune to this virus, but it has mutated and cause the vampire disease and given them the urge to kill. The world is now faced with a new plague of zombies."

Recently on Aint It Cool News, Harry, the owner of the website got an interesting letter from someone close to the production of the movies, this is what he reported:

From: Philip Nutman, writer of Children of the Dead

"A friend just emailed me your latest gabfest on CoD and no rumors, here's the straight scoop: Yes, there's going to be a forth "Dead" movie with or without George Romero (who hasn't signed on as yet) from an original screenplay by original "Night" writer John Russo. Yes, it's entitled "Children of the Dead". Yes, some of what your correspondent reported re: the plot is correct, but is just the background to the story and maybe constitutes 5% of the screenplay. The film is scheduled to shoot next year. I report this from an authorative, informed position as I am currently writing the three-issue comic book inspired by John's old screenplay and am involved, albeit indirectly at this point, in the production process. The screenplay is sitting beside me as I type (don't ask -- no you can't have a copy).

As to Romero's involvement, from what I understand, that's up to George. Maybe. Maybe not. I really don't know. But considering the fact he's a/ signed on to write and direct Resident Evil; b/in negotiations to write/direct Resident Evil; or c/ "having discussions about Resident Evil" -- well, no one, including George, seems to know what George is doing right now. All I can confirm is he and Russo have had discussions and had a meeting a couple of weeks ago with interested financial parties at the show in Las Vegas, and John Russo is producing the project. However, since Romero has also announced he's developing a TV show based on "Day of the Dead" with Britain's Granada TV it appears his plate is more than full. We'll just have to see."

Blood and Chocolate
Entertainment Weekly reports that actress Jennifer Love Hewitt (Party of Five, I Know What You Did Last Summer) is in talks to star in the upcoming film adaptation of Annet Curtis Klause's novel, Blood and Chocolate. Hewitt would play a young werewolf that falls for a human, putting her and her family of lycanthropes in danger in the MGM film.

Daughters of Eve
It seems that horror novel's are the thing to be made into movies lately. First we had the screen adaptation to Lois Duncan's novel I know what you did last Summer, then theres the talk of Annet Curtis Klause's book Blood and Chocolate, the Fear Street Saga's (which we are still waiting for) possibly being made into a TV series and now another of Lois's books called Daughters of Eve. The novel involves a high school art teacher that uses the guise of feminine philosophy to manipulate a group of female students to take revenge on other students that they believed have wronged them. The film will be produced by Joel Silver.

Terror Train
The late 70's/early 80's were a time when horror films were hip and coming out by the dozen. Now the trend has begun again, so why not remake some of those early flicks to scare a whole new generation. For those who remember, "Terror Train" was a 1980 film which starred 'scream queen' Jamie Lee Curtis and various young actors playing high school students on a 'costume party' train trip celebrating graduation, blissfully unaware of the psychopathic killer onboard murdering them one-by-one and dressing in the costumes of his victims. Now the buzz going around is that Dimension films has secured the rights for the film from 20th Century FOX with the intention to remake them. No confirmation on this yet, though we should know pretty soon. The big question is, will magician David Copperfield play the same role again?

NEW as of May 13th, 1998
Valentines Day
Warner Brothers have picked up Valentine's Day, based on a pitch by Donna and Wayne Powers. The duo will co-write the script, with Wayne making his directorial debut. The story is based off of Tom Savage's 1996 novel (see, another movie made from horror novel-what did I tell ya?), Valentine: A Novel and involves a college nerd who gets humiliated by a group of women. After ten years, he transforms himself to a stud and returns to the school on Valentine's Day, to seduce the women and then get revenge. WB closed the deal late last week. "We're hoping to get it into production very fast, so that we can release it on Valentine's Day 1999," a WB spokesman said.

Fear Street Sagas
I've heard about is that the R.L. Stine "Fear Street" series will be made into a scream like franchise series of movies or a TV show on ABC (A Disney runned station dealing with horror--I just can't see it). Anyways-if you are like me, this will make you quite happy. But for you to be like me you'd have to be a younger female who read these books when you were younger. I first got into the series when I was 10 and I was delighted to hear that they might be made into horror movies. The rights to more than 75 titles have been bought so far-so we'll see! Maybe the horror genere is making its huge come-back and these movies are a part of it!

NEW as of April 18th, 1998
Ok, I haven't heard anything about production of these movies/ or a TV series in a while-but for you Fear Street Fan's keep hope alive while I contine to search for information!

Desperation
Its a movie made about Steven King's novel with the same title.
Production Stage: Develmental Hell

King has completed the screenplay and principal photography is scheduled to begin shooting in early July. It will probably be shot in Arizona and Los Angeles.

NEW as of June 18th, 1998
The only new news I have to offer would be that its being directed by Mick Garris and produced by New Line Cinema. More info coming soon!

Piranha Re-Make
Piranha is being remade, BIG budget, with a script by Tim Metcalfe and Adam Simon. Thats all that I've heard as of now. But tell me this, why would you want to re-do Piranha? I mean, Piranha wasn't all that great-why not just make another sequel? That would be a lot better.

NEW as of May 13th, 1998
An addition to Piranah...it was purchased by Zenga I believe. Ironically, this will actually be the THIRD remake. A tv movie was done that is officially considred a remake. I have not seen the remake, so I cannot attest to it's coolness or it's crappyness.

Exorcist 4
Project Phase: Script Stage.
Who's in it?: Max Von Sydow
Comments: Reportedly, this film will be a prequel, dealing with the first time Father Merrin waged war with the big red guy - pre-pea-soup-in-the-face, you might say. We all know what happened to Merrin that dark night in Georgetown, so Wisher's task is to bring some kind of jeopardy to either Merrin's demon-infested patient or create interesting secondary characters.

Well, I'm begining to wonder if this movie will ever be made also. The place where I get most of my information on this film hasn't had a rumor update since freakin' September 2, 1997!

NEW as of May 2nd, 1998
William Wisher is off the project. William Peter Blatty is now writing and set to direct this next installment which will take place 20 to 100 years before the first the events of the Exorcist happened.
