Issue 38: "Dead Man's Land" Part 2: Conclusion"
Story Synopsis:
Tommy and Natt are trapped in the church, with a bunch of vampires surounding them. Their leader Darius (Who comes from the pages of "Hellblazer" during Ennis' run on the comic) tells them about vampire life, and makes them an offer to work for them. Tommy and Natt refuse, making Darius seriously mad. They manage to buy some time by making a hole in the ceiling of the church, and allowing some sunlight to come in, and them to take some cover from the vampires. Time is still short though, and Tommy decides to call Sean for help. Baytor answers the phone and takes a message. Fortunately, Sean gets the message, and comes in time, along with Ringo, Hacken, Sixpack, and the rest of the thugs that frequent the bar. Together they shoot the hell out of the vampires. The church is condemned with a bulldozer, allowing sunlight to come and kill the vampires. The people of the Cauldron have won. Tommy is not pleased though. An innocent child was killed. He has to make sure that no one gets any other ideas for the Cauldron, and then sets off to tell the boy's mother about its death.

STORY
It was a bit of a surprise to see Darius here, and even more suprised to see him die. I read the Vampire storyline in "Hellblazer" and I loved it, but I didn't expect it would conclude in "Hitman", since it is a Vertigo title. The vampire way of life was a nice bonus, and I like reading the entire bit over and over again. The bit with Baytor, was funny, and the final image was very powerful.
As much as I liked this issue, I have to say I was a bit dissapointed. When I saw Sixpack, Hacken and Sean on the cover, I expected something like "Zombie Night". Instead I got a shoot-out. Yes, it was good, it was very well drawn , it was just not what I expected. I expected to see more of Sixpack, Sean and the others. But then again I suppose I shouldn't be that way. It wasn't as good as other vampire stories Ennis wrote, like "Blood and Whiskey" but it was still pretty damn good.
ARTWORK
I loved the Artwork in this issue! Darius and the vampires were drawn in such a way, so that they weren't completely ugly, but they did nethertheless cause our hate. The bit were we see Darius in Hiroshima, during the Nuclear Bomb explosion is fit for a poster. And what of the shooting climax? I said it once, and I will say it again: No one can draw a shoot-out like John McCrea. But what I liked more was the final image, with Tommy's warning. Very powerful and strong and it will stay in your memory for weeks after you read the comic. Trully fantastic!
The inks were also very good, and I have come to appreciate Leach's work as well. They seem to go with John's Pencils perfectly, and are really into place with the overall mood of the comic. Even the lettering department had some great credit, and the colouring, especially during the shoot-out and the final image, fitted like a glove completeing the art, and sending it over the limit! What else can I say? The Hitman team is a great asset to the DC office.
