ISSUE 42: For Tomorrow, Conclusion
Story in Synopsis:
Tommy and Ringo confront the Waterman's gang, and are chopping them down to mince-meat. The Waterman gets shot clean through the spine, and Harcourt is watching all of this. Ringo promises him that he will kill him, and shoots the camera. The Waterman, comes back...He is still alive! He takes out Tommy, but Ringo is still standing. Ringo chases the Waterman, and gets into a trap. He gets fatally shot, but manages to shoot down his killers. Tommy and Ringo share a final moment, where Tommy promises Ringo to help him, and that they are both glad they never found out "who's faster". In the next panels, we see Ringo lying down. The Waterman approaches to chop his head off... only to discover that his body weight was the only thing that kept a grenade from exploding...old trick, but a favourite. The grenade explodes, killing Waterman, the rest of the gang, and Ringo, while Tommy escapes. Ringo then has a final confrontation with death, who offers him a job, working for him. Two weeks later, in Hong-Kong, Harcourt is playing golf, and gets killed while yelling at his guards. Tommy comes back from Hong-Kong, telling them that it is "like Manhattan set against a mountain" (what Ringo told him in "Final Night"). They all have a drink to Ringo, and the story ends... with a dedication to John Woo, and Chow Yun Fatt.
Hit-Bits
"It never mattered, Tommy. If it did, we would have killed each other years ago...Who's faster is a question children ask... not friends..."
"When it's your turn (to die) Tommy?....Try to go with dogs at your feet..."
Criticizing
Story
OH MY GOD, THEY KILLED RINGO, YOU B******.!!!
That's what I SHOULD have said after reading this issue, yet...I didn't. One of the main supporting characters, who was with us for 42 issues, and has saved Tommy's life on several occasions, is not there anymore... and yet... I don't feel the least bit upset, partly because I expected it, and partly because Garth handled it really well. And, as far as death scenes go, his was a damn pretty good one! The bits, little before his demise, and after he gets killed, where he confronts "Death" for the final time are great. I think it was good of Garth to make death offer Ringo a job. I like to think that he went somewhere better. His dialog with Tommy, before, and after he gets fatally shot is genuinely truthful and touching. The villain, Waterman, was also a real piece of work. Small short, despisable, and greatly evil, we grew to hate him very much in the last 4 issues. True, he was a bit stereotypical, I've seen lots of villains like him in Chinese class III movies, but he a was handled really good. The way Tommy takes him out, using the same trick Ringo used to avenge his parents, with a grenade hidden under a body, was really great, as well as the images that followed it. Harcourt's Death scene was also nicely done, showing him in his most angry and ruthless, right before Tommy shoots him....
Issue #42, had it all, action, death, and it was really emotional, as we lost a great character. And yet, it was a strangely uplifting issue, showing us the values of friendship, and commitment between two very different people, with very different lives, who just happen to be hitmen...
Art
"Nobody draws a gunfight like that mother*****" (Kevin Smith about John McCrea). Action came a lot in this issue, and it came in spades. The final gunfight, was greatly drawn, and seeing Ringo is action (literally kicking major butt) was something I won't forget in short while. But while the action was great in the issue, I'll have to say that what really impresses me in this issue was Ringo's death scene, and his confrontation with "Death". Leach's inks really gave McCrea's pencils depth, and I sure hope this collaboration will continue. The colours were also great, dark moody in the death scenes, and bright and colourfull, in the scenes after that. The cover was literally FANTASTIC, with a shade of Tommy hugging Ringo so close to death, while the light shines in a background of blood red.....The art gave Garth's script life, and complimented it....
