For example:
At 12 o'clock put a carnation ...
At 1 o'clock place a red rose ...
At 2 o'clock some marjoram ...
At 3 o'clock a sprig of violets ...
At 4 o'clock a field daisy or two ...
At 5 o'clock some sweet-pea ...
At 6 o'clock some broom ...
At 7 o'clock a few little sweet-william's blooms ...
At 8 o'clock let's put some jonquil ...
At 9 o'clock a little bit of herb robert ...
At 10 o'clock a little touch of pink clove ...
At 11 o'clock let's close it up with some sweet-sultan.
Can you interpret the above message? I will let you have a few minutes to see what you can decipher. Lovers passed many messages to each other in this manner in days-gone-by; preferring to risk sending a bouquet or a small gathering of flowers over hand-written correspondence - particularly if they didn't wish to have their elders know about their affairs of the heart.
If you care to refresh this "language" it can be easily done since flowers can be telegraphed to many parts of the world these days and a reputable florist will ensure a bouquet being made to "order" and delivered to the recipient - but be careful not to mistake the names of the flowers needed and to take time to give precise instructions. Also be sure to tell the florist to NOT SUBSTITUTE, sometimes even the best florist cannot have access to some posies but be sure to tell them that if one of the flowers specified is not available to NOT set another flower in it's place - thus risk garbling your message or sending an entirely erroneous one! Thus there are no barriers that exist today as like in days of yore when some petals would wilt or even die before being received.
Here are some more examples of blending you can substitute into the arrangement to change the message a bit ... Combining of flowers to form a bouquet allows a longer message to be formed.
"Meet me" = Ivy
"Tonight" = White Campion
"Today" = Pimpernel
"Tomorrow" = Buttercup
"I will meet you" = Ivy & White Clover
"I cannot meet you" = "Ivy & Lavender
"Make another appointment" = Ivy & Red Clover
"Meet me tonight at 7 o'clock" = placed at 7 o'clock positioning if you desire, Ivy, White Campion, Sweet-William
Don't limit yourself though!! Don't want to send a bouquet or whatever? Cool! Then how about this for an idea ... create a love garden or floral border?
