They Flee From Me
They flee from me, that sometime did me seek,
With naked foot stalking in my chamber.
I have seen them, gentle, tame, and meek,

That sometime they put themselves in danger
To take bread at my hand; and now they range
Busily seeking with a continual change.

Thanked be Fortune it hath been otherwise,
Twenty times better; but once in special,
In thin array, after a pleasant guise,
When her loose gown from her shoulders did fall,
And she me caught in her arms long and small,
And therewith all sweetly did me kiss
And softly said, "Dear heart, how like you this?"

It was no dream, I lay broad waking.
But all is turned, through my gentleness,
Into a strange fashioin of forsaking;
And I have leave to go, of her goodness,
And she also to use newfangleness.
But since that I so kindely am served,
I fain would know what she hath deserved.

This poem, and the one following, are translated from Petrarch. Though the meaning is retained, each places emphasis on the issues that matter to them. Specifically, note the difference in the ending - Wyatt stresses living faithfully and true, and Howard stresses living with love.

The Long Love That in My Thought Doth Harbor
The long love that in my thought doth harbor,
And in my heart doth keep his residence,
Into my face presseth with bold pretense
And there encampeth, spreading his banner.
She that me learns to love and suffer
And wills that my trust and lust's negligence
Be reined by reason, shame, and reverence

And then he has his love poetry:

The Sun Rising

Busy old fool, unruly sun,

George Herbert (1593-1633)

George Herbert is well known for his non-overbearing religious poems - they talk about the Lord in a casual, friendly way which invites closeness and direct communication. Contrast this with John Donne's "Batter My Heart"

Love (III)
Love bade me welcome: yet my soul drew back,

Guilty of dust and sin.
But quick-eyed Love, observing me grow slack
From my first entrance in,
Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning
If I lacked anything.

"A guest," I answered, "worthy to be here":

Love said,"You shall be he."
"I, the unkind, ungrateful? Ah, my dear,
I cannot look on thee."
Love took my hand, and smiling did reply,
"Who made the eyes but I?"

"Truth, Lord; but I have marred them; let my shame

Go where it doth deserve."
"And know you not," says Love, "who bore the blame?"
"My dear, then I will serve."
"You must sit down," says Love, "and taste my meat."
So I did sit and eat.

When I Have Fears
When I have fears that I may cease to be
Before my pen has gleaned my teeming brain,

It helps in understanding this poem to imagine John holding this vase, looking at the pictures on it, and musing out loud

Ode on a Grecian Urn
1.
Thou still unravished bride of quietness,

Thou foster child of silence and slow time,
Sylvan historian, who canst thus express
A flowery tale more sweetly than our rhyme:
What leave-fringed legend haunts about thy shape
Of deities or mortals, or of both,
In Tempe or the dales of Arcady?*
What men or gods are these? What maidens loath?
What mad pursuit? What struggle to escape?
What pipes and timbrels? What wild ecstasy?

Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard
Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on;

Who are these coming to the sacrifice?

To what green altar, O mysterious priest,

What little town by river or sea shore,
Or mountain-built with peaceful citadel,
Is emptied of this folk, this pious morn?
And, little town, thy streets forevermore
Will silent be; and not a soul to tell
Why thou art desolate, can e'er return.

O Attic* shape! Fair attitude! with brede

Of marble men and maidens overwrought,
With forest branches and the trodden weed;
Thou, silent form, dost tease us out of thought
As doth eternity: Cold Pastoral!
When old age shall this generation waste,
Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say'st,
"Beauty is truth, truth beauty," -- that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.


*Tempe and Arcady (or Arcadia), in Greece, are traditional symbols of perfect pastoral landscapes.
*Attic = Greek, especially Athenian.
