of Law. Joel quoted a Russian colleague who said, "Women aren't interested
in feminism, they're only interested in bread." To paraphrase early American
feminists, Joel noted, "This conference not only about bread, but also about
roses." He emphasized that the collapse of the communist system showed that
many things that seem immutable, unchangeable are actually more permeable
than we think.
