S: Neily Boyle (Recorded for Regal Zonophone; May 3, 1937; Dublin)
R: double jig
A: Donegal (The Rosses)
G: Fiddle
N: Appears in O'Neill's under this title as well as giving an alternative
N: - Gathering Dilisc.
H: Neily recorded this as Neil O'Boyle. He is also commonly known in west Donegal
H: by his name in Irish Gaelic - Neillidh O Baoighill.
H: One of the many characteristics of Neily's playing is devastating speed without the loss of accuracy.
H: On the original recording he plays this tune three times. These three renditions
H: are played in one minute and fourteen seconds!
H: Neily's fiddle is pitched very close to E. This tuning up was another hallmark
H: of his playing.
Z: Neily heavily emphasises the strong double jig first and fourth note beats
Z: on the first part of the tune by repeatedly double stopping these notes using
Z: the two middle strings of the fiddle. The triplets which appear in the transcription
Z: are done very staccatto and with great speed. They interestingly appear on the
Z: unaccented notes of the tune.
Z: A variation of Bar 2, part 2 is also played as |fab afe| where the
Z: first three notes are played on a single bow stroke. The two introductory notes are
Z: played on a down then up bow with the first full note played on a down
Z: bow. The playing is largely staccatto (single bowed) throughout with
Z: some exceptions.
