Sites for Donegal Fiddlers and their Fans

Newly updated, September 1998. This is really out of date, but it might still be helpful. Links on this page about:

Sites about fiddling

NAFA: Internet Fiddle Resources
A fiddle organization's set of fiddle-related links is probably the best available at present...in particular, see this page of links.
"Fiddles of the World" Festival, July 11-15, 1999
This web site promotes an international fiddle festival that claims to be the first of its kind, to take place in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
"The Fiddle Web"
It's gotten rave reviews from fiddlers on Fiddle-L, and for good reason: an excellent and easily-updatable database of information about fiddlers, fiddle organizations, camps, etc., worldwide, on- and off-line.
Georgi's Home Page of the Fiddle
A general collection of links to fiddle pages, about fiddling of all different styles, with some information about each page; also, a list of sessions.
Chris Ricker's Fiddle Page
Another decent fiddle page.
Fiddler Magazine
The home page of this excellent publication has plenty of information about the magazine (sample articles, how to subscribe, etc.) as well as links to other sites.
Andrew Kirk - Violin-Maker - Guidebook
Does your fiddle buzz? Think you need to change strings? This site has a nice guide to fiddle maintenance and repair.

Donegal musicians, and where to get their music

The Altan Home Page
The newest and best Altan page, which comes from the band itself. There are some nice articles about the band, tour schedules, and .wav files from each album. (If you haven't heard it, listen to their fiddling here; select The Red Crow from the left frame.)
Virgin Records' Altan Page
Another Altan page, also very good, with a tour schedule.
The "Unofficial" Altan Tribute Page
This page has a bunch of Altan links and a gazillion newspaper and magazine articles (reviews and profiles).
Tommy Peoples' Website
Very nicely-done website, promoting his new CD, The Quiet Glen, which is available directly from the man himself. The site features a RealAudio sample of a fine slow air from Tommy.
Traditional Irish Music Publishers, Record Companies and More!
A handy list of music and book publishers. Don't know how to get obscure recordings? Mail order! In this day and age you rarely have to be there to buy things. Just dial a few toll-free numbers and get catalogs.
Ulstersongs
This is a place to order some hard-to-get Donegal material. Here is a list of the Donegal fiddle recordings Ulstersongs carries. They have some items I didn't know were still available, like John Doherty's Pedlar's Pack and Neillidh Boyle's The Moving Clouds.
Claddagh Records
Claddagh has a fairly large stock of Donegal material.
Cló Íar Chonnachta
An Irish record company -- publishes Francie and Mickey Byrne's Ceol na dTéad.
Roger Millington Publishing
A place to get the music and reminiscences of Packie Manus Byrne (not a fiddler, but a Donegal character) -- they say they are soon to publish a tunebook containing a lot of Donegal tunes Packie plays on the whistle.

Sites about Irish music and Celtic music generally

Ceolas Celtic Music Archive
Lots of very useful information about Irish, Scottish, and other kinds of Celtic music. If you haven't seen it yet you should take a look. There is some stuff relevant to Donegal music contained in the site that I am not referencing; you'll have to find it yourself. There is a good collection of Irish music links there too.
Encyclopedia of Traditional Celtic Music
A very impressive effort by Michael Robinson, who wrote an article on Donegal fiddling for Fiddler Magazine. He also has posted Caoimhin Mac Aoidh's article on different Irish musical styles.
Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann
This organization was set up in 1951 to provide support for traditional music and culture in Ireland. Treoir is "the Irish heritage magazine of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann which is published four times yearly. It is full of news, views, songs, stories and pictures."
Irish Music Magazine
Magazine devoted to traditional Irish music (and its more modern derivatives).
Irish Traditional Music Archive
Extensive information about the Dublin Archive; includes some short articles such as one called "Learning Irish Traditional Music."
.tradnet
Many reviews and links about Irish traditional music.
Celtic Music Magazine Online
An online magazine, with many articles, mainly about Irish music in the U.S., by a Wisconsin-based musician.
