Discussions on the History of Conscience and Ethics
This Webpage
About This Website G RiggsPlease excuse this undue(?) anticipation. Am not sure I'll quite have the chip memory needed to access this week-old-plus thread by the time I'm ready to comment for everyone on the entire Jefferson Gospel. So I'm taking the liberty of putting a newer message onto the site now, so I won't have to go so far back on such a busy site once I'm ready to do comprehensive justice to Jefferson's efforts--which will probably be some time towards the end of the week. It will, frankly, be easier for me to pick up this thread with an interim message of this sort already on the site.
Eyler CoatesIf there is no objection, I will attempt to transfer these conversations to my Jefferson Bible Website. They will be edited to remove the repetitions and available in HTML format at the following URL:

Conversations on Morality and the Jefferson BibleThis is located at a mirror site I maintain for the Jefferson Bible, since the primary site does not have sufficient space. Besides making it easier to review what has been written on this thread, it will also make the information more readily available for other interested persons in a more readable format. I realize that this thread is not devoted solely to the Jefferson Bible, but I believe I can justify the inclusion as long as Jefferson is woven into the discussion now and then.
G RiggsThanks to E.C.'s hospitality for transferring this thread to his own web site and letting us view the progression of these communications in an easier way. Just to show everyone how raw and dense I can be in all of this, is E.C. actually inviting us to go through the far easier process of simply sending all our future responses directly to his e-mail address rather than to this incredibly busy, well-populated, and chip-memory-gobbling site where we have started this initial exchange? Or would this be an unwarranted intrusion on E.C.'s privacy? Please be frank. By all means, let us know. Thank you.
Eyler CoatesThe thought did go through my mind that this discussion could be conducted via email and posted on the page I have devoted to this thread. It would not be either an intrusion on my privacy or an extra burden to me. I am delighted with the level at which the discussion has proceeded thus far, and am happy to make it all available on my Website for interested visitors. The Jefferson Bible is on the reading list for at least one college level course that I know of, and I believe that this kind of discussion could only make the Website a fuller learning experience. Therefore, I would be more than glad to do whatever I can to facilitate its continuance. My only concerns are the following:
. . 1. If the activity on this thread were shifted to my Website, we might, in effect, make it unavailable to interested persons who will occasionally run across it through the Newsgroups. These are also the very kinds of people that might be most likely to make a contribution to the discussion.
. . 2. The format that I have tentatively adopted for the Website is not the same post-and-response format on the Newsgroups. I had (again tentatively) decided that I was not going to adopt a definite format, but that I would let the discussion itself shape the format. As of now, I am attempting to insert responses under the points being responded to. Later, it might happen that the discussion would fall into "chapters" devoted to the various aspects of the general topic. As you can see, this kind of format would make the whole vastly more intelligible to the reader coming upon it fresh, but would make it very difficult for the participant to know who is, or should be, responding to whom, since one participant's response might be broken up and placed in several different locations. In any case, since this arrangement is all tentative, let's do keep the matter under consideration. I would be very amenable to whatever arrangement best served all our needs.
G RiggsFor the time being, I'm content to leave this thread here, since I believe certain topics have been raised here that could prove stimulating to many users. For reasons too complex to go into at the end of such a long communication, the more frequent and lively the exchanges here, the easier it would actually be for me personally to maintain the discussion here, but others brought into this discussion by the same interests may feel differently. I'm still grateful to E.C.'s flexibility on this matter, but let's hold off on any decision till the end of next weekend. That would give this thread a fair chance, I believe.
C. W. JonesThis looks quite interesting, but my brief survey of Usenet yielded nothing but obscene nonsense. Usenet is largely unknown territory for me and I am not inclined to try it again.
Eyler CoatesThe aversion to Usenet is perfectly understandable. Discussions often descend to little more than insults and name-calling. However, any visitors to this Website should feel free to send comments to me as editor and participate in the discussions here without having to set foot in the Usenet Newsgroups.
Comments on This Website MPolidoriI'm impressed, enthralled, and enlightened by Coates' and Riggs' writings. You have dramatically enhanced my understanding of our thinking and behavior regarding race relations. Thank you.
AppelbaumI am overjoyed with the finding of this site. I am impressed with the intelligent discussion of the Bible, morals, and the destiny (?) of man. I hope to someday have something enlightening to share with the readers of this wonderful forum.
Paul MillerMany congratulations on your Jefferson Bible web site! I have been a reader and admirer of the Jefferson Bible for years. It presents a way for someone not interested in all the supernatural content of the gospels, but who loves the teachings of Jesus, to peruse the gospels without the chaff.
I would like to see you get all your links to other web sites from all of your three Jefferson web pages onto one comprehensive links page.
Your site here is one of the best I've come across. It is bookmarked and I will return often. Thanks for your efforts!
Eyler CoatesThanks for the kind words. There is a "comprehensive links page" which lists the most important sources for materials related to Thomas Jefferson. This is located at:
Thomas Jefferson on Politics & Government
Links to Other SitesOther links on the various pages are not necessarily related to Thomas Jefferson and usually represent reciprocal links to the specific page on which they are listed.
There is also, by the way, a single page which has a list of all the websites installed by myself. A short description is included for each. Most of these are related to Thomas Jefferson, but there are also a few on other subjects. This page is located at:
