The Genealogy of Brigit
Translated by Caitlin Mathews

It is this Brigit who is poetess or the wise-woman whom the poets worship, because of her great and wonderous protection. It is for this reason she is called the Goddess of Poets, she whose sisters are Brigit the Healer and Brigit the Smith. These Goddesses are the three daughters of the Dagda. The three sons of Brigit the poetess are Brian, Luchar and Var, the three sons of Bres, son of Elatha. Brigit the poetess, daughter of the great Dagda being their mother.

An Invocation to Bride
Translated from the Gaelic by Caitlin Mathews.

I take Bride as my Advocate
Dear to me is Erin,
Dear to me each land
Praise be to it!

White Flame of Lienster,
Enlighten the whole land,
Chief of Erin’s Maidens
Chief of Finest Women

Dark the bitter winter,
Cutting it’s sharpness;
But Bride’s mantle
Brings spring to Ireland.
