Recent Updates:

  • 17 December 2001: Minor formatting changes. Deleted old GeoPropaganda table. Removed some link rot.
  • 30 July 2000: OK: the AATK Fan Reviews page now contains info from all (I think) of the reviews people sent me. My profound apologies for the delay in posting the responses. Time constraints prevent me from accepting more ratings, sadly.

    The Film: Summary

AATK is a drama based on the autobiography of Anna Leonowens, a tutor to the 19th century king of Thailand. The story has hit the big screen three times to date: in the 1956 Yul Brynner / Deborah Kerr musical The King and I; in John Cromwell's 1943 classic dramatic version, Anna and the King of Siam; and in the animated Disney feature The King and I, released this year. The original movie, which starred Irene Dunne and Rex Harrison, won two Oscars in 1947, for best black-and-white Cinematography and Art Direction.

Filmed March-June 1999, mostly in Malaysia, AATK stars CYF as Mongkut, King of Siam. Andy Tennant is the director and Jodie Foster plays the female lead. The film is a big budget epic, with US$75m apparently being tossed around for the filming.

TrailerWatch: I always like to keep track of where the trailers showed, so that really determined fans can go check out the action. Fox shelled out a pile of dough to put the teaser for ANNA AND THE KING onscreen before THE PHANTOM MENACE, which means that the trailer was seen by millions way back in May, before my AATK coverage really got going. Other films which featured the AATK trailer include: THE RUNAWAY BRIDE, THE MUSE. The trailer also showed on television on ACCESS HOLLYWOOD.

The trailer is now online at the Official AATK site, in both high- and low-res (32 and 3 MB). (And thanks to KO, David, Anh Tran, Judy Hardy, Desiree, Cyndy, Carol, Andrea, Luke Styer, Mis Fit, Steven G., Mike K., Adam, and Cassie for writing in to share the excitement of this latest glimpse of CYF on the big screen! Special thanks to Cyndy, Wilson Wong, and Cassie, too, for sending me the URL to find the trailer online.

    The plot?

The plot? In the 1860s, a young English widow arrives in Siam (now Thailand) to tutor the king's children. A clash of cultures and personalities ensues, as she slowly earns the king's respect and comes to understand and appreciate the country in which she lives. gratuitous pic of King M with kiddies

The Real-World Clash of Cultures? The 1956 musical version of the story was deemed so offensive to King Mongkut (a revered historical figure, in Thailand) that the movie was banned -- and still *is banned -- in that country. Even this latest version irritated the Thais to the extent that after months of negotiation they refused to let AATK film in that country (Malaysia was the stand-in). Inaccurate depictions of the king's relationship with women, for example, were seen as lése-majesté (as when scenes were staged of the king dancing with Anna), and in general they seem to feel the Western versions grossly exaggerate the influence of Ms. Leonowens on the king, and underplay the dignity and intelligence of the monarch himself. The Thai concerns are reviewed in detail here, and info on the real historical figure Chulalongkorn (reign name: Rama V) is available from this online Asiaweek article and at this biographical site from the King Mongkut Institute of Technology of North Bangkok. In addition, there is the Thai commentary AATK page, maintained by students. I esp liked their page Anna Leonowens: Fact or Fiction?, which contrasts the historical and autobiographical versions of Anna's life. (And thanks to Dan Helmick for posting the URLs in a.a-m.!). However, some of the Thai concerns seem more reasonable than others -- one annoying comment from the director of the Thai Film Board was that even Fox's decision to cast CYF as the king "showed a lack of sensitivity to the royal family," because CYF is best known (in the west) for his gangster personas. Donnez moi un break, as we Quebecers say.

    Reviews

Critical reviews so far have been mixed, I'm sorry to say. Several critics have derogated the glacial pacing of the film, while mostly commenting positively on CYF & Foster. You can read several of the reviews at
CYF In Depth. On the other hand, fans have loved it, as I did! The AATK Fan Reviews page is on the whole HUGELY positive.

I'm no longer accepting ratings in the old format, but if you're interested, please do Add a CYF Fan Film Review!

The rumours? Having made the move to Malaysia, the lavish sets and fabulous costumes of ANNA AND THE KING drew a flood of media attention throughout the filming in 1999. Excerpts from Ain't-It-Cool News and Dark Horizons, along with articles from the Asian press, may be browsed at my CYF media archive (esp. check the articles for March-May 99).

    The Books

The full integration of the entertainment world has only recently dawned on me, when Cassie wrote in regarding the slew of AATK tie-ins. For one thing, there is the "novelization" of the movie (?!?). They apparently expect this to sell like hot-cakes, Cassie says, since her local store ordered 700 copies!
  • Anna & the King, by Elizabeth Hand. (ISBN: 0061020451; Harper Collins College; November 99; us$6.50; bind. paper text (most likely mass market paper)). (Thanks Cassie!)
  • The English Governess at the Siamese Court by Anna Leonowens. This has been rereleased in 1999, as a mass-market paperback.

Pic of CYF from the Official AATK Site. Whoohoo!
    • The Official Site is online, and is fabulously good-looking. Neat pix, a fair amount of CYF info, and some fun production notes (did you know the elephants used in AATK ranged from one to fifty-seven-years-old?).
    • An AATK page is available at the IMDb.
    • There is an excellent unofficial AATK page, The King and I maintained by a group of Thai students. It provides critical commentary on the kaffufle with the Thai monarchy, along with tonnes of neat pix and a fabulous AATK newspaper archive. Definitely nifty.
    • Leigh Melton's Free Man in Hong Kong CYF site -- THE place to look for gorgeous CYF pix -- has added a new feature: an AATK image gallery. Very nice indeed.

You are probably the only person who has ever accessed this web page, while I myself have logged on times since September 26th, 1999.
