Chow Yun Fat is invited to play 007?
Chow Yun Fat on the night of the 3rd was in Singapore, receiving Cine Asia's Star of the Decade award. The sponsors invited Fat Jai's manager Terence Chang (Cheung Ka Chun) to be the guest presenter.
More than a hundred members of the press from all over Asia were present. Because the ceremony lasted 3 hours, there were plenty of quiet scenes. Luckily Fat Jai was the finale which attracted many fans and reporters.
Cheung Ka Chun revealed earlier when MGM chief, the director and producer of James Bond came to Hong Kong, they invited Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) and Chow Yun Fat to dinner. The head of MGM revealed optimism toward the future development of the Asian film market and hoped to have Fat Jai to play a Chinese version of James Bond which will target the Asian audience.
Reporters asked if Fat Jai is interested in playing James Bond. "Sing Jai earlier has made Gok Chan Ling Ling Chut (From China with Love), then I have to be Chinese 007, I don't think so!"
Is Fat Jai confident about being comparing to Sean Connery, Roger Moore, and Pierce Brosnan? "There is no comparison, the skin color alone is different. The film company said it is targeting the Asian market, I believe the production will be different."
He pointed out the dinner was just initial discussion. Since going to Hollywood, he understood that many plans are not fit for discussion until they are solidified. He will talk again when the management agency and the film company have further planning.
As when the chief of Columbia Pictures met with Fat Jai in Singapore seemed very confident about his new film The Replacement Killer, planned to invest in Hong Kong movies to gradually open the Asian market and asked Fat Jai, his wife and Terence Chang to manage the project. Fat Jai after considering declined the offer. "Although there is support, a film company takes too much energy. When I made Peace Hotel I already knew running a company would involve a lot of executive and distribution problems. It's not easy."
He expressed currently he is focusing on his career in America and doesn't have time to concern himself with film production. Mrs. Chow has been too busy to breath just for his business alone. He didn't want his wife to have another burden.
Mrs. Simon Yam Tat Wa and Mrs. Chow Yun Fat get along like buddies
Simon Yam Tat Wa and Kei Kei would hold their wedding banquet on the 29th, inviting his friends in the business for the celebration. Among those invited was Chow Yun Fat, unfortunately he would be overseas promoting Replacement Killer, thus he instead invited Wa Jai and Kei Kei to dinner, as Mr. and Mrs. Chow even greeted them with a wedding cake to congratulate the new couple.
Although Kei Kei and Len Nui (Fat Gor's nickname for Mrs. Chow) met for the first time, they got along like buddies. Wa Jai and Fat Gor talked about a lot of things, like jogging, exercising, and movies.
During the meal, Fat Gor and Len Nui were like glue. Wa Jai joked that they looked more like the newlyweds and immediately asked them for marriage advice.
Earlier, Wa Jai and Kei Kei registered their marriage in Vienna. During their trip, they went to a casino. Kei Kei said her husband had good luck. When he played roulette, he won three times in a row and over HK$10,000.
Wa Jai admitted he has noticed some gamblers and learned from them. He even started teaching Fat Gor. Kei Kei said to Wa Jai, "Fat Gor is the God of Gamblers!" Fat Gor laughed, "You don't know when I was losing like mad!" Kei Kei then reminded Fat Gor, "Did you have any chocolate?"
Before the dinner was over, they made another appointment to meet again after the Lunar New Year. Kei Kei however grabbed Len Nui's hand, making her promise that she would attend her wedding with Fat Gor, but Len Nui only said, "I have to see what my husband is going to do. I will come if he will!"
'CORRUPTOR' TEMPTS MARK WAHLBERG
By Chris Petrikin, for the Daily Variety of October 28th.
HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - ``Boogie Nights'' star Mark Wahlberg is in final negotiations to co-star with Chow Yun-Fat in the James Foley-helmed ``The Corruptor'' at New Line Cinema.
According to sources, the film would amount to a $2 million payday for the former rapper known as Marky Mark.
The film would reunite Wahlberg with helmer Foley, who directed the rising young talent in ``Fear.'' ``Corruptor'' was written by Robert Pucci.
``Corruptor'' is a cop drama about an Asian police officer (Yun-Fat) who has fallen under the influence of a Chinese gangster and is teamed up with a rookie cop (Wahlberg). The rookie appears to follow in his corrupt footsteps but
actually is working undercover as an internal affairs officer.
The film is slated to begin production in February.
Wahlberg mulls NL's "Corrupter"
by Josh Chetwynd for the Hollywood Reporter site.
Mark Wahlberg is in negotiations to star with Chow Yun-Fat in
New Line cinema's "The Corrupter." Based on a magazine article,
the film is about a New york Chinatown cop who turns bad because
of a debt to a crime lord. Wahlberg would play the cop's new
partner who is forced to investigate his colleague's wrongdoings. If Wahlberg's deal closes, sources say he would receive $1.9 million from New Line as part of his salary. This would be the actor's next project. It is slated to start early next year.
Chow Yun Fat has 30 seconds to introduce Hong Kong for free
Chow Yun Fat indeed is the Big Brother of the film industry! Seeing today's tourism in Hong Kong in trouble after the 97 Hand over, he as an entertainment superstar didn't ask for a cent for a Hong Kong Tourist Association television commercial to promote Hong Kong.
Reportedly, Fat Gor in the 30 second ad will sell Hong Kong as having everything and will lead the viewers on a tour of Hong Kong.
The entire film was shot in secret at the Peninsula Hotel when Fat Gor was in Hong Kong earlier.
Hong Kong Tourist Association Public Relation chief Ms. Wong revealed the ad starring Fat Gor is currently in post production.
Would Fat Gor's personal touch be more effective than Chief Executive Tung's trip to Japan?
Chow Yun Fat is a Big Man who is not afraid of divorce
A series of telephone commercial which stars Chow Yun Fat and Pat Ha Man Jik debuted on television on the 13th. The company held a press conference at the yacht club for the occasion. Fat Jai's appearance even attracted reporters to ask him for autographs. ....
Cheung Soe's family crisis caused a storm in the city, Bee Soe's (Mrs.Kenny Bee) affair started a ruckus at home. Both Ah Soe made the reporters run around; Chow Yun Fat's wife is nicknamed Fat Soe, so the reporters asked
if he would change her nickname for her?
Fat Jai said, "I too feel Fat Gor sounds better than Fat Soe, from now on don't call her Fat Soe anymore, call her Lin Mui, Mrs. Chow, or even Len Nui (pretty girl). Every time I get her mad I always call her Chiu Cup Len Nui (Super pretty girl). Wow! My wife immediately falls for it."
He expressed he would get her mad over minor things like which movie to see or what to have for meals; what if "Len Nui" gets "Len Lo" (Fat Jai) mad? Fat Jai said, "I would tell her to bring a bowl over. What for? Of course it's for me to puke blood into!"
Fat Jai felt in a marriage, the most important thing is one of the two is willing to sacrifice; if the guy loves the girl more then the guy is at a disadvantage, if the girls loves the guy more than the girl is at a disadvantage; when he and Len Nui are together of course Len Nui is the one who gets taken advantage of.
When asked how come he can't love as much as his wife? He said, "There is no balance in love, plus men can't always have "I love you" hanging by his mouth. My wife and I have been married for 8 years and I rarely seriously say I Love You."
The reporters turned and asked Len Nui for the secret to their
marriage, except Len Nui Mrs. Chow said, "Don't listen to me! He and I dated for 3 years. We registered 12 years ago in New York. He can't even remember what happened in New York. He can't remember my birthday, so it's not surprising that he doesn't remember our anniversary."
Would she get mad over Fat Jai forgetting her birthday? She joked she is used to it. Husbands are no use if they only treat their wives well on birthdays. It's more practical to treat them well everyday.
She said, "The secret of my marriage is at any time the woman must always put her husband first, family second. In this society it's impossible to have equality between man and woman, so man and family must be higher than you."
Does she have any thing higher than Fat Jai that would make him go into a introspective? Len Nui wisely said, "I can't say what I have is higher than him, actually besides IQ and EQ which have numeric comparison, there are no comparison with the other stuff. Marriage can't be used for comparison."
Reportedly during the shooting of the commercial Fat Gor bonded with the child actress who played his daughter. Thus the reporters hounded Fat Gor about his plans for children. Fat Gor only laughed, "The job is so busy now, I will think about that when I have nothing to do!"
After the promotional activity, on the night of the 13th the couple flew back to America for additional scenes and voice work on Replacement Killer. The first will premiere in Hong Kong. Fat Jai expressed that is due to respect for Hong Kong because of Hong Kong's serious piracy problem, as the company is trying to avoid the pirated version appearing before the
film is in the theaters.....
Andy Lau Regrets ....
[In an interview Andy Lau, nicknamed Wa Jai, was talking about the people he felt he owed a lot to.]....Wa Jai said, "Since I started in the business Fat Jai has been really good to me, so I really would like to return the favor, but perhaps Fat Jai
doesn't need my support."
Actually Wa Jai has only been to Fat Jai's home once, before Fat Jai got married. He said, "I never gave Fat Jai a contact number. I felt like I am over reaching." He remembered once Fat Jai was being interviewed on the radio and asked his friends to call in. He immediately dropped everything and called him.
CYF on the new HK Film Development Plan
[HK boss Tung Chee-Hwa announced a plan for new support if HK's film industry. For example, the new plan is to reduce red tape which slows down or stops street-scene shooting now.]....Fat Gor pointed out, if the past colleagues in the film industry have been blaming government continuously for the lack of assistance, but today it promised to allocate land and create committees to service the needs of the business.
Fat Gor added however the report was still very broad. There is still a need in the future to say how the government will act on these promises....Fat Gor thanked the film people who after joining the temporarily legislative council greatly mentioned the need of assistance. Fat Gor also hoped there will continue to be representatives from the film industry who will keep fighting for the film industry.
Chow Yun Fat's new film will be in nation wide release
....Fat Gor revealed in the beginning of next month, he will head to America again, mainly to do an additional scene for his new film. Once that is completed the film will officially wrap. At the end of the year he will tour Europe and America to promote the film, which will be released world wide around Lunar New Year To his knowledge the film also received China's approval and will be released nation wide. [Along with the Yeoh Bond film, Tomorrow Never Dies, Jackie Chan's Who Am I?, the Stephen Chow Chinese James Bond (sequel to From Beijing With Love) and other HK contenders.]
....Actually at the end of the year he was to perform in John Woo (Ng Yu Sum)'s new film King's Ransom, but due to scheduling problems, Fat Gor would rather concentrate on his performance by delaying the project until April.
There is also a new film, [The Corruptor] which Fat Gor is in negotiation to star in next February, to be produced by Oliver Stone. Fat Gor said he has agreed to perform, but the details in the contract still need to be discussed.

Chow Lights His Hollywood Fire
By Kelvin Tong for the Life! section of the Singapore Straits Times of Monday December 8, 1997.
Three and a half broadsheet pages of Chow info and pix (pages 1-3 and 7 of the Life! section). What I love about CYF interviews in the Eastern press is that they can take the basics for granted, leaving much more time for the really interesting stuff. Thus, CYF on heroic bloodshed: "I love those roles because they are always trapped between the devil and God. They create different layers of drama that are very valuable in action movies as they provide another way, besides the explosions, to attract the audience." Or Mrs. Chow being exceptionally frank on the HK movie scene: "Hongkong scripts are not good. And it's not right for him to get all that money doing all those stupid films. We won't be true to ourselves.... Our attitude is even if we fail [in Hollywood], it's ok because we tried." There's lots of good stuff here, if you can find the article! (And thanks to Daniel Sun for sending me this fascinating article!)
