Italian in Slovenia

There was a huge Italian minority in Slovenia and Croatia before World War II, dating back to the Venetian Republic. The Italian minority was concentrated in Istria and Dalmatia, and Italian were the majority in the city of Fiume/Rijeka. After World War II, nearly all of them emigrated to Italy, especially Milan. Today, the Italian minority has a special status in Slovenia with Italian schools and political representation. There are around 3,000 Italians in Slovenia. Italian in Croatia

In Croatia, Italians number a few thousand people, and they are a recognised minority. There are 10 elementary schools and 4 secondary schools for the Italians. The Italian Union of Croatia is formed by 40 active communities. There are many Italian forms for places along Croatia, but our table lists places where the Italian Union is currently active (though only some of them, so far, unfortunately).

Croatian in Molise (Italy)

In Southern Molise province of Italy, there is a diasporic dialect of Croatian, spoken by descendants of 15th and 16th century refugees from Dalmatia. It is spoken in just three villages, by some 3.500 people; mostly old people, so the language is severely endangered.

Istro-Romanian

A dialect of Romanian (a romance language also), isolated as a linguistic island in Istria. Now spoken in the Croatian village of Zejane in the northeast of the Istrian Peninsula, and a few villages south of it. Speakers: from 500 to 1.500 according to different sources. We only have two names. See also the page about the Aroumanians.

Istro-Errumaniera

Errumanieraren dialekto isolatu bat, Istrian. Orain, Kroaziako Zejane herrian hitz egiten da, Istriako ipar-ekialdean, eta inguruko herrixketan. Hiztunak: 500-1.500 lagun bitartean. Ikus pare bat izen hor behean. Halaber, ikus Arumanieraren inguruko informazioa.

This romance language was spoken in Croatia, in the western coast of the Istrian Peninsula, now only in towns of Rovinj (Rovigno) and Vodnjan (Dignano), by less than 1.000 speakers. Its relationship with other romance languages of the area (Italian, Dalmatian or Friulian) is not still clear.

Istriako mintzaira erromaniko hau Istriako mendebaldean mintatzen zen Kroazian. Orain, bi herritan soilik: Rovinj (Rovigno) eta Vodnjan (Dignano), eta mila hiztun ere ez dira geratzen. Eskualdeko beste hizkuntza erromaniko batzuekin duen erlazioa ez dago argi.

Dalmatian

Extinct romance language also known with other names: Ragusan, Vegliot. Spoken in Croatia along the coast of Dalmatia. Last spoken in Krk (Veglia) where became extinct in 1898, formerly also in Zadar and Dubrovnik (Ragusa).

Dalmaziera

Dalmaziako hizkuntza erromaniko hila, Kroaziako kostaldean mintatzen zen. 1898an hil zen azken hiztuna Krk uhartean (Veglia). Han Vegliot izaten zitzaion, eta Ragusera ere esan izan zaio hizkuntzari Ragusa edo Dubrovnik hirian mintzatzen baitzen.
