Friends of AthensFAQ
|
1. Who Are "Friends of Athens"?
The "Friends of Athens" are Athens homesteaders who are interested in the growth of Athens as a neighborhood, and in promoting ways that Athens homesteaders can more easily locate one another in order to build ties of mutual interest and friendship within the neighborhood.
This effort grew out of the earlier "Community Assistant" program, and is watered and fed by Atheena, Jone, and Mauudie, with help and encouragement from many others.
2. What is the mission of Friends of Athens?
We encourage people to make a contribution towards the development of Athens as a community - rather than a collection of great but mutually unknown homepages.
We have seen many creative solutions for community building in use by homesteaders on sites throughout Athens. Our intention is not to direct but to welcome, to promote, and where possible to facilitate such efforts. We urge homesteaders to create and to participate in Athens- based group connections such as webrings, chat, message boards, community web sites, mailing lists; to link to one another's web sites, if they are thematically related to your own and pleasing; and to show community pride in your travels around the Web by, for example, adding your Athens homepage address when you post to a newsgroup or message board.
3. Which community activities are outside the scope of Friends of Athens?
Activities which require approval or participation by geocities are outside the scope of this effort. We are a homesteader association, not sponsored by geocities management, and our interest is in your home page and in your connection to the community of homesteaders who, like you, have chosen to make a web home in Athens.
4. Is the Friends of Athens group a project of the community leaders?
There is no formal connection to the Leader program at all. Friends of Athens are "civilians." Some have volunteered as Athens Community Leaders currently or in the past (and we encourage everyone who has the time to consider volunteering to serve Athens as a leader. The more volunteers there are, the more cared-for and vital our community will become.)
5. Okay, how do I sign up?
You could visit Community Friendly Home Pages, display our Friends of Athens Graphic, and if you maintain a neighborly feature on your site, register your Community Friendly Home Page in our Registry! See below.
6. This sounds very disorganized to me.
Good! We believe that grassroots growth is the secret of the web's strength; the efforts of many people doing good things with their online friends combine to create a powerful worldwide community.
7. What can I do to become a Friend of Athens?
Join an Athens-based webring, apply for an award from another Athens homesteader, visit the Athens message forum, check out Athens chat, surf around Athens and add some links to your site for Athens pages that you like - you're a Friend of Athens! Please add one of our "Friends of Athens" graphics to your site, and link to this or to another "Friends of Athens" community-friendly home page.

Community Friendly
|
1. What is a Community Friendly Home Page?
An Athens home page with features designed just for the use and enjoyment of other Athenians is Community Friendly. Athens homesteaders offer everything from an Amusement Park to a guide to Pagan homepages in Athens. There are webrings, chat, and awards. Every one of these features was developed by one of our neighbors in Athens.
If you have a community-friendly feature on your home page, you may display our graphic. Please REGISTER your site before downloading the graphic, and please link it to this site.
