THIS IS AMERICA, “the land of the free”! Our nation has probably provided the greatest
gurantee of freedom than any other nation which has ever existed on the earth. The reason
for this is not based upon the Constitution as it is the Bible.
Our forefathers wanted a nation which would govern its own affairs without approval or
interference of a foreign king to whom it was held in bondage. They wanted a nation in
which individuals could worship as conscience and scriptural conviction dictated not by
order of the English Crown. Ours is a nation established under God and framed by devout
men of faith and prayer. Though not a Christian, Thomas Jefferson authored a bill of rights
protecting the rights of Christians and others, a provision insisted upon by men like Patrick
Henry and George Mason, with George Washington adding his agreement with his fellow
Anglicans.
They advocated religious freedom as opposed to a state religion, and a nation which
accomodated personal faith and the Christian gospel.
What did these heroic men of the past know? Just this: “Righteousness exalteth a nation:
but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 13: 34). We have seemingly lost our
national righteousness and with it, our national pride and our right to it. An early French
author is credited with having remarked; “America is a great nation because it is a good
nation. If America ever ceases to be a good nation it will cease to be a great nation.”
Whether the credit has been cited correctly or not, it is a true statement and, possibly a
self-fulfilling prophecy regarding our day.Righteous nations are comprised of righteous
people. Righteous people is what makes a righteous nation righteous.
“The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God” (Psalm 9: 17). It
is the righteous nation -- made up of righteous people that will stand. Only God can save a
nation and only God, through Jesus Christ can save a soul of an individual. When God’s
people commit to righteousness, to prayer, to following after God, to open evangelism
and voting for godly people, then we can again have a righteous nation.
When will we see God save America? When we who are His will conform to what He
wants in making Jesus Christ pre-eminent in our hearts, so we can accomplish what is
pre-eminent in His heart we may see God save America and make great, as she once was.
America was once the lighthouse to the world because of our unique biblical standards and
commitment to the strength and goodness of the nation, made up of the strength and
goodness of the individual, based upon each person’s personal faith in a godly gospel. We
need to commit to Christ: Christians need to cling to His Sovereign Lordship; unbelievers
need to cry aloud for His saving power.
