The Locator Map

The Gustav Klimt Gallery is composed of three long hallways containing six blocks each.  Each of the hallways have paintings on the west wall and the east wall as well as one painting each on the north and south wall.  Three arrows help you move around the gallery and view these paintings.

On the right is the locator map telling you which block you are on and in which direction you are facing.  This particular map tells you are on Block C, facing West.

Using the Arrows to turn Left or Right

Relative to where you are facing, the left-arrow lets you twist left without moving from the block; the right-arrow lets you twist right without moving from the block.  The up-arrow moves to the next block in the direction you are facing.

Assuming you are in Block C, if you click on the right-arrow, you will twist right.  This means you will still be in Block C, but this time facing North.  The corresponding view is the hallway.  What you see are the next two paintings in the direction you are facing.  In this particular example, you are viewing the perspective views of paintings 5 and 6 on the west wall; and 9, and 10 in the east wall. These paintings are highlighted in orange in the locator map.

Using the Arrows to move Forward

Say you want to move forward.  Click on the up-arrow and this brings you to Block D – one block ahead of where you were facing.  The  view changes so you see the perspectives of paintings 6, and 7 on the west wall, painting 8 on the North wall, a part of painting 17 in the North wall (because part of the view is being blocked by the East wall), and painting 9 on the east wall.  Note that compared to the previous view, the perspective view of paintings 6 and 9 advance, as paintings 7, 8, and 17 come into view.  Again, the paintings on view are highlighted in orange in the locator map.

Viewing the Paintings

At this position you can either click the left-arrow to view painting 5, or the right-arrow to view painting 10.  Assuming you click the right-arrow, you will twist to view painting 10 on the east wall.  Again, the view changes so you can see the painting and the tour notes.  While viewing a painting, you may click on the painting itself to get a closer view.  When you are through, you may click the left or right arrow to face either  North or South respectively.  There are no up-arrows while viewing the painting – this prevents you from getting too near the painting and triggering our alarm system.

Suggested Tour

With these instructions you will be able to freely move about in the gallery.  However, there is a path I recommend for two reasons: first so that you will be systematic in your viewing so you won't have to unecessarily revisit viewed painting; and second, this path builds on topics previously discussed -- that is, as you move further into the path, I will be refering to things I have mentioned in paintings you've already viewed.

If you want to follow this path, consider the image on the right.  First tour the entire west wall of the left hallway, and then the east wall.  Move on to the center hallway and view the entire west wall before the east wall.  Then make your way to the right hallway and again view the entire west wall and then the east wall.  When you leave the gallery you can visit the Curator's Office, the Trophy Room, the Library, and the Post Office on your way out.
