Understanding Ira

Perhaps I was a little misleading in my title. It should have read "understanding my porch sits with Ira". You see, no one really knows too much about Ira. It's not really necessary to know much about Ira. Oh, he's real and all. Matter of fact, he lives in Texas, which I suppose makes him someone to know in itself. From what I've always been told Texan's have a real fondness for people and sittin' and talkin'. Some Texan's are pretty worldly too. Some even have a bit of sage advice that goes beyond their small town country upbringing. Ira is that way. He's a darn good friend too.

How long have I known Ira? Oh, about four months, I suppose; Four months and a lifetime. Ever met someone you feel like you've known in a previous life? Someone that feels like a long lost family cousin? Your about to.

Ira is my confidant, my other half, and my 'family'. Yes, I can say that. Ira is family because we have similar backgrounds. We both grew up in rural small town, America. We like talking about things that take place in small towns and we pride ourselves in being American.

We also share in other things. We both flew helicopters in Vietnam. Ira flew a Cobra gunship and I flew a 'slick' - Huey. We didn't know each other then but we were being 'set up' to meet later. Things always happen for a reason in small towns. Nothing goes on in hometown America without hearing a reason for it. Ira and I have found ourselves sittin' on that porch down in Texas a lot lately. We have reasons for why things happen the way they do.

I usually have a little problem figuring things out but in the end Ira usually has some insight for me. He's like that. Smart as a whip, but he won't just come out and tell you that...you have to kinda feel your way at first. It's worth the effort though. There's a lot of livin' in Texas.

My 'porch sits' are a way of showing myself as well as Ira. I'm a little shy so if it weren't for Ira, you might never hear of me. I tend to carry the conversation sometimes, but don't let that fool you. Ira is the one behind it all.

Somewhere back there I was going to tell you who Ira really is, but I don't really have an answer to that one myself yet. Let me just put it to you like Ira, himself, first told me.

When Ira first went to Nam he planted pecans in the ground. I don't know if he did this intentionally or not. He may just have done it to relieve anxiety and help sort things out. It don't matter. He came back to find little pecan trees. Now this was most fortunate because if he had planted pine trees or oak trees he might not have the time to sit with me.

Those pecan trees grew into little money trees and it took a little time of course, but when he figured all this out he was ready to cash in on some of that past anxiety. Those pecans became popular....So he harvests them. I think there must be more then two.

Something else happened while Ira was away in Nam too. Now, I don't know much about these things, but Armadillos begun to move into his grove. I mean, there must have been more than two of them too, because today he has....a lot!

Those amadillos began to hang around and when Ira found them they had made a home. These weren't just any amballios either. They was fine breedin' stock. So Ira went into business with them. He has a stud farm for amorous amerillos.

Now you begin to see some of the wisdom of Ira. Trees grow and fruit, and armerillos roam and produce, and all Ira has to do is go around and kinda pick up after them. That leads to a lot of thinkin' time and that's where I come in.

There is a lot of learnin' to be gained from Ira. I intend to sit on that porch for many years. Some day, I too, may understand Ira and the acumen of his ways.

Till then, may the sun always be with you, may your pecans be good, and your amberdillos always smile. Oh, yes....if you get some time in your busy day, stop by that porch in Texas and sit with us awhile. Ira won't mind, and heck, I need all the help I can get.
